This dragon is different from our local one. Perhaps due to the development of the ethnic group, the design may differ. Our local dragon, with its dragon head and tail connected to its body. There is someone holding a large fireball in front, and the dragon is chasing the fireball. Playing with fireballs. During the Chinese New Year, the dragon returns to every family to pay respects. I remember when I was a child, when the New Year arrived, the dragon began to pay New Year's greetings. My mother carried my young self on her back and crawled under the dragon head, with the aim of removing a dragon beard so that she could receive the protection of the divine dragon.@@kats_journey_east

I have met a young couple in Thailand recently. They were from US and they were traveling from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and then to Cambodia and Vietnam and before going back to US. We have happened to have a casual friendly conversation and I have asked them since they are so near to China, why not go to China just for a few days to see China. I told them China is very interesting, But I was surprised of what they told me. They said according to all their media reports in US and advice by many people. They were advice and told not to travel to China. Even their parents don't allow them to go to China. They told China is not a safe country to travel. Very dirty, poor rundown infrastructures, poor transportation system, polluted, homeless people everywhere begging money, robbery is common even in broad daylight and chances of been detained for no reason by the Communist is very high. Because China is an authoritarian state and all foreign visitors are monitored by thousands of cameras everywhere, every minute where foreign visitors go. Foreign visitors from western countries can be detained for months or even years for no reason. All these is what they know about China. The couple look like they are below 25 years of age and already so badly brainwashed by their government-controlled media. This is really sad. And here in this video we are seeing a beautiful white Caucasian lady alone going everywhere safely and making video recording freely and no one or police come and stop her.

What you saw in the video is not a temple but an ancestral hall. A temple is where people worship gods/ budda. An ancest ral hall is a place where the whole clan ( of the same surname) remember and pay respect to their ancestors.

I find this tradition fascinating. Handed down from generation to generation. I'm a 3rd generation Malaysian born Chinese. We do have lion dance and the less popular dragon dance, but they look very different.

我来给阳离子解释一下，什么是修谱，我不专业的，仅供参考。修谱就是修订族谱，族谱也叫家谱，主要是记录本族人的姓名排辈、重要事件、人物、迁徙等发展历史。华人用族谱记录应该有上千年的历史了，目前最长的可能是孔子家族的族谱。修谱主要把本姓家族的每个人记录上去，还有一些知名的人物，发生的大事，并且按父系脉络记录，女性嫁出去就不算本族人了，儿子才是本族的。在本家族中，每个人都有一个辈分，一般在三字姓名中的第二个是他的辈分，生下来取名时就按他的辈分来取名，譬如杨姓生了儿子，按族谱排是“传”字辈，那么他的姓名很可能是“杨传X"，当字不够的时候，修谱时就要续字辈。你看到的是修谱的仪式，举办仪式费用是来自本族中有财力的人捐助。至于其中的仪式有什么讲究，我也不懂了。

Of course the Chinese will use lots of fireworks in such evenbts. They invented fireworks during the Song dynasty (960-1279). They are made with gunpowder, which was invented in China as well during the Tang Dinasty (9th cenmtury). Gunpowder is one of ¨Four Great Inventions of China¨, the other 3 are the compass, papermaking and printing.

That’s my clan. Surname “Yang” has a population of more than 100 million people in Mainland China. The “Yang” clan is sometimes called “Yeo”, “Yeung”, “Young” in different regions outside of China. Our 1st ancestor is the uncle of Zhou emperor and was given the land “Yang” near today’s Xian in 808 B.C. My 93th ancestor moved to southern China in 1337 A.D. I am the 112nd generation of my blood line. I am glad that my genealogy record has been well kept. Typically we have different names on our genealogy record, with the middle name represents each generation. Our clan uses five elements for radical of middle name character: metal, wood, water, fire, earth, to indicate each generation. So when I see a relative with an element prior to mine, I have to pay respect and address him as my uncle, even if he is a baby. Katherine’s video shows how much effort our clan people are putting into preserving Yang genealogy record but I think other clans are doing the same too. Continuity is at the core of Chinese civilization after all.

I'd say the second temple, named the Zhang Family's Center (张氏宗祠), isn't actually a temple. It's more like a family assembly center, a place where the family leader manages affairs. While Chinese people are often seen as non-religious, the worship of ancestors and the belief in striving for success in one's career to contribute to the family or simply to uphold the family name, in my opinion, functions as a kind of religion.

This looks like a very old town, it still has some traditional buildings and cultures like decades ago. After watching your intro video, I must say you're clever, brave, and kind and you have your own thoughts, you know what you're doing and you're living a wonderful life. 这个叫祠堂Ancestors' Hall。It's not temple. 浙南和福建应该都有吧？就是宗族文化，一个姓一个大家族。然后清明节一个辈分一桌回来要吃清明酒。我们这边名字中间都有代表辈分的一个字（如果名字是两个字的，至少族谱上有）。 这些都是翻新的。我记得我小时候很害怕去祠堂吃清明酒因为房梁上都是提前准备的空棺材。不过我们祖先崇拜好像是全国现象。

Chinese cities are like this. The old city and the new city are close to each other, and sometimes they appear in the same place at the same time. They have retained most of the old city. I am 76 years old, born in GuangZhou, my ancestral village is in ZhongShan. I left maiinland china in 1948 with my grandparents and never been back to ZhongShan until i retired. Now living in Canada.. My grandmother told me that when i was three months old, she took me back to ZhongShan to put my name on the 族譜. It probably was just a small ceremony. I am quite sure i am the only male member of my generation with name in the 族譜 from my grandfather's branch, although there are five others. I have a son and he has a son. I wonder if i can continue the tradition to put their names in it. I visited my ancesral village a few years ago, most of the houses were rebuild and the ancestral hall was no where to be seen. The lot that my grandfather's house stood was there with a new house built by anoyher member of the clan. He freely admitted that the land was my grandfather's. 's.

As a Chinese, it is a complete failure to not be able to add yourself to the family tree. In ancient times, only family traitors and the most vicious criminals would be expelled from the family tree. My Grandparents were from Guangzhou too. They also left in 1948 to Brazil then settled in Linares Mexico. I only knew about my Chinese ancestry after my Beloved Granmama passed away 10 years ago.. I am a first born proud Texan American of Mexican descent female retired 80 year old. I pass my time researching Chinese culture, architecture, porcelain etc..and I watch a lot of Chinese dramas trying to get in touch with my Chinese roots. @SaintFluffySnow I don't know where is your ancestral village, the passing of traditional custom in the Pearl River delta is a lot faster than the rest of China. In ZhongZhan there was almost no sign of any old china, although not far away in TaiShan, my wife"s ancestral village still looked like a traditional Chinese village, at least at the time i was there. I am just afraid that the ancestral hall washad been torn down and the clan organization just disintegrated. I will have to find out find out the next time I go back, if I still have next time.

Many people thought China is homogenous. Not just it has 56 diffferent ethnicities, even the majority Hans have different customs , traditions and foods according to their origins be they Cantonese. Hakka, Minan, Chouzhou, Shanghanese, people of Dongbei etc. This is the first time I see this Chinese festival being celebrated. You can live your whole life in China but still have not seen everything in the country.

As I can remember the movie 'Kids From Shaolin' starting Jet Li. The story in the movie and this Dragon Festival is very similar. I would recommend anyone to go watch it to understand this festival. This is so cool I never thought I would see this on Katherine video. Now I want more of Chinese festivals video.

The genealogy book is a chinese tradition that keeps the naming sequence for a family line. It is a 20 year cycle as that old lady said. It is the Middle Name that changes and is kept in the family "naming book". My family used to have one, but my dad burned it when he became the custodian. He was very upset about quite a few "ancient traditions", as he believed that it caused my grandma's early demise. Just as well, bcos, other than Spring festival and Winter solstice, I dont follow any other "traditional" celebrations.

I believe that’s 修谱. We don’t have this tradition in my home town. They have a book which lists all the family clan’s name on it called 谱. I guess 修谱 means add names on the book.

I can't help but write another comment. The banners didn't just referenced Receiving the Dragon (JieLong 接龙), but Bajia (八甲) before that. I'm not super familiar with divination and numerology of the Yi-Jing (or they called it I-Ching in the US 易经, or rather, Zhou-Yi 周易 since it was created during the Zhou Dynasty about 1000 BC), but Bajia is one of those aspect of Taoist ideas, which also has an enormous part to play in ancient agricultural society (both timing for planting and choosing of auspicious hours to do "anything"). So the twenty year thing may have something to do with it too. Then again, may be it's just because the Yang Clan is sooooo huge in Chinese history going back to the Han if not before. I'm sure there's a lot more to it if you or anyone wants to dig into it, that plus probably a thousand other such traditions from ancient people from the desert to the sea, mountains to the jungle. It really boogles/boggles/boogers the mind. It's these things that keeps people together and give them identities, not blue jeans and McDonalds (ok, may be blue jeans)

小时候我们有舞龙舞狮。每年都有。然后是元宵看花灯。每个月都有至少一天是节气。这条是祭拜祖先和基本土地神的时候。早早起来杀鸡或者鸭或者鹅，把煮好的鸡鸭鹅拿到土地庙去祭拜，回来后再在自己家的神龛前祭拜祖先。然后一家人才能吃饭。当然祭拜时先摆贡品，点蜡烛和香火，结束前都是先烧纸，放一个小鞭炮串。浙江以南都有这样的习俗。应该说是受道家思想衍生出来的道教的影响

as what i got from this video, this is a local family/clan Yang (all people surname yang born in local will consider as a tribe) has their ceremony, adding new member name to their family tree every 20 years. Chinese kinship system.

The traditional or cultural event like this should be very interesting for westerners. But, to get more YT viewers and subscribers you need to more "dig-in" your chinese skill conversations with locals and make them amazed, YT viewers love to see those moments, especially when they "wow" with your chinese skill. Unfortunately, as far as I know by watching your channel, you don't have interest to focus on those "wow" language segments, what a pity, but it's all your decision.
