I count myself lucky that my Judo Club focuses on the newaza game as much as tachi waza. It also doesn't hurt getting those bjj guys and gala coming through to train during open mats. This video is amazing.

And this is why BJJ could be called Gracie Newaza or Brazilian Newaza. Not jiujitsu. All BJJ is a heavy accent to Newaza and it is wrong that most BJJ gyms do not mention their origins, and do not credit Judo's Newaza as the actual source.

The truth. In fact Maeda was Jigoro Kano's protege in New waza. Those were the techniques used when fighting dojos from other styles. Maeda was forbidden to use the term Judo because Master Kano wanted it held to a higher standard and not be known by brawling. When he went to Brazil he used the term Ju-Jitsu.

+LeonKrajin Shut the fuck up about the semantics. It's a false notion that BJJ was developed exclusively by Judo's newaza. The Brazilians were taught both stand up and ground but over time they gravitated towards ground fighting since it was the best place to fight under certain circumstances. Just because you see an extended view of Judo, or another grappling art for that matter, for ground work, it doesn't make it the same as BJJ. A good example is the comprehensiveness. BJJ has a whole world of half guards while all Kosen shows are getting out of the stalling position of half guard. You really need to get on with the times. BJJ has branched off from Judo pretty far by now.

And still I can show you pictures and footages of Kosen judokas using *De la Riva, butterfly, spider guards etc before it was even a thing in BJJ* . 99% of what I have seen in BJJ I have seen it before in judo, it's just that its evolution as an olympic sport killed most of it in common practice (mostly outside Japan). *Even gogoplata, bodylock, lockdown, summersault guard pass and so forth can be seen in a 1950's footage of Oda senseï on KZbin* . I mean no disrespect saying it: people just think they reinvented the wheel.

+Chris Chiang To be fair jiu jitsu is a old common misspelling in the West (just have a look at 1900's newspapers). And even nowadays in big Judo federations like in France, they officially say "jujitsu" ("i" being pronounced as the "e" in English).

What saddened me is you never got to see good newaza like this anymore in judo because of the stupid new rules they have, he would be stood up in seconds in the world championship when he tried to free his legs

Kosen Judo is just a rule set created well after BJJ. BJJ and Kosen focus on Newaza Judo. Judo in the early 1900s had far fewer rules and Newaza played a larger role in the art. Judo even allowed wrist locks. That form of Judo made it to Brazil in the early 1900s and was preserved by the Gracies and others in Brazil, and the openness of their approach allowed for innovations to take place. In Japan, the more formal training environment stifled innovation and the lack of competition under free newaza rulesets led to old style newaza Judo/Jujitsu slowly dying out. Had it not been for the Gracies not following the Kodokan and the changes in rulesets, much of that old art would have died out. Instead, they made it global by focusing on applying it to Vale Tudo, and then making Vale Tudo global with the creation of the UFC . Helios and his sons also reintroduced/reinvented street fighting applications that the Kodokan may have overlooked from older Jujutsu. Maeda would have set them on that path being a prize fighter. Catch wrestling would have also been a part of the fusion. BJJ is still 90% Newaza with continued innovations for loser rulesets as well as infusions from catch wrestling.

Les ramasse mentes de jambes ont été supprimé ( pour le moment) car les russes ont apportés les techniques du Sambo et le judo ressemblait de plus en plus A de la lutte ce qui devenait difficile vis à vis du sport olympique d'ailleurs la lutte a été supprimée des jeux. Et le judo est redevenu le judo avec de beaux mouvements techniques. Dans les techniques notamment le nage no Kata Kata guruma est toujours présent. Lors des passages de grades techniques on peut tout faire comme ikomi gaeshi etc. Bonne pratique.

Humperdoo yes they do. Im talking about more inovations per the guards. The judo guard work is much less advanced. And i dont mean it insiltingly. The judo turtle work is more advanced than bjj. Its just that bjj has literally spent the last 80 years working very sophisticated ( sometimes overly sophisticated where it becomes too hard to learn in a timely manner)

Humperdoo yes the inovations that de la riva or in more recent times keenan cornelius. Ive never seen intricate guard work like that in judo. I dont personally know the specific names of the techniques but no judo guys have guards like that. If they dod theyd make it visible to the world.

The Dela Riva Guard that is claimed by Dela Riva to be invented by himin the 1980s is a Judo Technique and is the 2nd most used guard in Kosen Judo in Japan. I'm sick of Judo & BJJ rivalry. They're both so bad ass and similar in a lot of ways. There are very few pros vs cons in comparison and even so they're all subjective. There will never be an indicator of which is better, because everyone is different as is ever circumstance. I train specifically in Kodokan and I love learning from BJJ, even though I'm restricted in tournaments. Both have some really cool ground techniques.

just call bjj and judo different sports... im a judo guy, but i do plenty of both tournaments... i do a lot of groundwork.. waaaay too much to ever be competitive in sport judo... heck, at my judo school i wear jiujitsu gi's, not the ones with lots of patches, but i like them because the way they fit... i feel like the sport doesnt matter, cant we just roll? thats what i care about.. my two cents..

Look up "red dragon dairy kosen judo" on youtube search. You'll be amazed at how much it is preserved in japan....lol

Ippon was damn near impossible. I feel like jiujitsu rules are more closely related to the way the old judo rules were. If only in bjj tourneys they allowed the idea that if a throw is tough enough (not very easy by aaaany means) the match would end. The idea of ippon was neant to be debilitating. With a mat in place, a throw will never be debilitating.. Which is fine.. But we cant forget where martial arts comes from. Whuch is why i think it should be a thing.

you never see this moves anymore in judo. You go to any judo place with a wrestling or bjj background and you are tapping BLACK belts left and right. The only place for real judo is in MMA gyms or BJJ schools cause all the moves taught in this video are only taught there and not in judo schools with there no leg grabs and stuff.
