You must have missed when your teacher explained they/them pronouns can be used in ambiguous cases. Say for example someone is at your door but you haven't seen *THEM* yet so you are unsure what *THEIR* pronouns might be. The same applies for people who would like to use these pronouns for themselves singularly.
