Just a year and a couple of days ago, I first saw this Video. It wasn't intentional; it was on a suggestion from a Macintosh Forum about offbeat Christmas songs. I don't normally click on the links, but that time I did. Note that we were the Classic Rags to Riches Immigrant Irish success story. Yet I am the only one left. All the rest went back, or died, decades ago. Thank you again Caplan, Katzenjammer, and the Trondheim Soloists, (who for Soloists, play well together...) Just before the Parents went back to Ireland, The original Pogues were on the Stereo, While we were packing them up and off. Dad quite liked the Pogues... Both Parents would have adored Katzenjammer.

I rarely say something is better than the original but to take a rough Irish punk song, polish it up & throw immense talent like this at it, the result speaks for itself. If you didn't pay attention to the lyrics this comes off as warm, fuzzy classic Christmas song. And Ben Caplan's beard just tops it all off! Just missing a red hat!

I feel like I don't understand half of this song just because I've never been to the East coast/New York, but Katzenjammer's vocals are excellent as usual and now I know who Ben Caplan is. :)

I’ve listened to and watched both versions five times, objectively and dispassionately. Here are the reasons why I think this one is better. (1) Male vocals. Caplan has a much better voice than Macgowan without losing any of the authenticity of the original. (2) Female vocals. Obviously, I am not going to criticise Kirsty MacColl’s voice, there’s nothing to criticise. But the variety of female vocals in the KJ version is more satisfying. (3) Accents. In two videos both full of faux-Irish accents Marianne’s and Turid’s are more believable. (4) Arrangement. I didn’t think the piano introduction to the original could be bettered but the strings do just that - and carry on doing so right the way through. Anyone with me on this?

I prefer this one, but then again, I was a big KJ fan when I discovered this video, and didn't know about the original. But even if I really try to see it objectively, I see absolutely no reason to hate this cover (I can understand preferring the original).
