KaveMan Aquatics can you add any type of a young Cichlid with 3 adult angelfish?

Peter Rexinis Depends what kind of cichlid. Depending where they are from determines what kind of water parameters they need. African cichlids need different water PH and hardness than angel fish.

I’m upgrading my “overstocked” 60g to a 90g in the next few weeks and have been researching ways to do it safely for the fish. Like you, the new tank will be in the same place as the existing one. One issue for me is I want to use a completely different substrate in the new one. I’m gonna rely on the current sponge filters, hob and prime and hope for the best. Ideally I’d like to cycle the new tank first but I just don’t have the space for both tanks.
@KaveManAquatics3 жыл бұрын
I hear you, that would still work. There’s plenty of BB in your sponge filters and hob. If you wanted to be extra safe add some Seachem stability, but I doubt you would even need that. Make sure to test your water daily in case of any ammonia or nitrite spikes. If you do get a spike, do this - kzbin.info/www/bejne/naWZk4NqlNVqn6M

My daughter won ONE goldfish at a carnival. She is 29 years old. That was 4 years ago. Idk how this fish is still alive but it needs a bigger tank now. I have formed a grandparent relationship with this fish! 🤣 (jk) but for real I don’t know what I’m doing. There isn’t enough rocks at the bottom of the 10 gallon to put into a new tank. It’s a circular tank and he zooms around because he is trying to stretch he’s too big now for it. If I add new rock or substrate to the old wouldn’t it cover the old bacteria?? There is not that much rock at all. He need more. Also can I get him/her a friend?? Is it lonely? 😕🤦🏻♀️ I’ve been trying to read up but there’s conflicting stories about it. I’ve saved it’s life so many times. Please help me.

Just upgraded the 75 to a 125 but boy, the fish are loving the 6ft space! Just ordered my last 2 putting me at 24 fish. For some reason the transition from the 75 to the 125 was so much easier than when I went to the 75 gallon. Had that 50 gallon tote and battery air pump was a life saver! Added a new fx6 that makes it 2 filters with added established bio media. 2100 gph wave maker on top and 1600 on bottom on the other side and the fish colors are popping hard but probably just trying to figure out there new home. But thank you, I was able to this without issues from watching your videos. Not gonna lie, transfer substrate sucked the most lol

I am concerning doing the same thing. I am afraid to move everything because I don’t want to lose any fish due to ammonia spikes in the new tank. From my understanding, you moved everything over with no issues.

@@adcooper17 had no issues at all. I transferred my substrate and added some new substrate. Thoroughly rinse the new substrate if you are putting more. I had one established fx6 but I also seeded new bio media a month prior putting it in a new fx6. I currently run 2 fx6 filters for bio media and a fx2 for water polishing. I didn't have any spikes at all and I added all new water. The transfer took about 3-4 hours for me and omg, what a move. Between moving the old tank and installing the new one. You don’t use any of the water from the old tank? I am upgrading my turtles tank next weekend and my main concern was making sure I could get it cycled well enough to move him within about 12 hours. I have limited time because I was planning on installing my main filter first and leaving the smaller secondary filter until he is moved in, just to have some filtration still and to keep the water moving. I was going to use my provac gravel vacuum to transfer 1/2-3/4 of the water to the new tank. That should filter out almost all of the debris as it goes. I plan to run the canister filter most of the day and over night not only to help cycle, but because I was going to try to run it through bulkhead holes at the bottom of the tank that the previous owner was running a sump filter through, and I want to make sure everything works ok and doesn’t leak or anything. Any experience running a canister filter through a bottom drilled bulkhead?? I have a cascade 1500. Any thoughts/opinions/tips are appreciated!

Also forgot to mention four days ago my hang on the back filter died so I had to get a brand new filter and I got the fluval 407... on my water still testing good but basically had to start over with a new filter

When u did it did u use any of your old water or what will happen if I did that?
@KaveManAquatics3 жыл бұрын
Old water doesnt have anything beneficial in it. Just harmful Nitrates. You can use all new water because your beneficial bacteria is in your filter not in your water. Think of it as a 100% water change.
@jordantrujillo2933 жыл бұрын
Do you trust the canister filters and prefer them over the hang on backs? I have a 90 gallon with red eared slider, tiger barbs and thought about doing a canister instead to keep it cleaner better for longer. But have heard too many stories of leaks or draining tanks.
@KaveManAquatics3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, canisters dont drain or leak. Its a closed system. You may be referring to sumps which is an open system and has more potential for flooding problems. Canisters are awesome and I've never looked back to an HOB since switching. Heres a great playlist with some more info - kzbin.info/aero/PLP5OXTIIDO8O2S0tAxlVM4d8Gr1AI0Ula

I'm moving from a 3ft to a 4ft, and this video was what I was looking for! I'm so nervous to try this and lose all of my fish 😅 (I'm still fairly new to fish keeping) To confirm... By just using the cycled filter and the substrate, they should be all good?? I don't need to keep the old water? Do I need to be scared of water cycling and killing the fish? Is it recommended to do water changes regularly after, or leave it for a little to settle before you start changes again?
@KaveManAquatics3 жыл бұрын
Correct, by using your old media your tank will be instantly cycled. It'll be like doing a 100% water change. After adding the fish test your water to ensure there arent any ammonia spikes. You may lose some BB during transfer. But they will reproduce quickly. Dose the new tank with Prime to detoxify any short term ammonia spikes. Then do your regular scheduled water changes.

I'm new also, and I wanted to ask how it went.. your tranfer. ? I'm in the same boat you were. 😩 I dont want to lose any of my babies.

Hey so I just got a 20 gallon tank and I have 2 other 29s and a 55 in another room. I got my tank all set with all the ph and everything it needed am i ok to move a fish to the new tank or will that be a risk? I don’t want to lose my catfish but he is starting to eat other fish so I need to move him until I get a more permanent solution. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Can I put some of the old water in the new tank as well to also help with the cycling
@KaveManAquatics3 жыл бұрын
Old water wont help anything, let alone cycling. All it has is nitrates in it that you don't want. Use your old bio media, add new water at same temp and you'll be good to go
@nathanb_5.33 жыл бұрын
Do you use the Ayer from the old tank or do you just put new water in with the same already cycled filter
@KaveManAquatics3 жыл бұрын
Theres nothing beneficial in the old water BUT It depends on what your fish are used to. I just dis an updated video on this topic, check it out - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXy3mn2ClNilrKc

I’m upgrading from a 29 gallon with a whisper iq 30 to a 75 gallon with a fluval 407. Would it be possible to transfer the fish to the new take same day as setup by placing my old filter cartridge and media in the new tank around the new filter’s intake? Im also transferring the substrate and decor to the new tank as well.
@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
Put the old filter media inside the new filter and your tank will be cycled instantly.

Great video. I'm prepping for my upgrade from 260 litres to 520. Gonna stick the old 307 filter on the tank for 1-2 months whilst the FX4 gets seeded. Is it beneficial to transfer some old media into the new pump canister as well? Gonna move the old sand and pour a new bag over for the top layer. I've uploaded a video of my current tank and fishes, if you are interested!
@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
If you're going to keep both filters on, no need to move any media around. Old filter will cycle the tank instantly while new one gets seeded as well. Congrats on the upgrade! 😊

Hey! New subscriber just getting into fish tanks. I have a 20 gallon and I want to upgrade to a 75 gallon I was going to buy the fx4 canister filter. I was going to move the sand and decor from the old tank to the new one and buy more African cichlids sand how long should I wait until I move the fish over? Also what kind of siphon cleaner do you have !!! Thank you I’m advance!
@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
Moving the sand and decor is a great idea. You'll be able to move them over right away as your tank will have some bacteria in it from the transfer. I would also dose with prime and Stability daily for at least the first week to make sure your new tank gets fully cycled. Heres an updated video on upgrading your tank, hope it helps - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXy3mn2ClNilrKc

Great video! If I transfer the same substrate, water(my water is crystal clear and I test it every other day, and filter to the new tank, will I have to dose it with prime everyday like you do a fish in cycle or will it be ready to go like normal? Thanks again for the videos, so helpful!
@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
Transferring the water doesnt help anything. Transferring the substrate will, but the key is to transfer your bio-media from the filter, or just the whole filter itself onto the new tank. Then you'll only need prime on the first fillup to dechlorinate but the tank will be cycled instantly. Here's an updated video on the topic - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXy3mn2ClNilrKc

I thought it would be hard changing tanks but of course Kev does it again and shows me that it's really not hard at all. When you transfer them over, do you need to check the PH levels and make sure the new tank is good for them? I know you didn't do it but I'm just curious
@KaveManAquatics4 жыл бұрын
Good eye! Yes you should make sure your PH levels are the same in new tank as old tank, especially if you keep african cichlids at a higher than normal PH. Since I used my old substrate which has crushed coral and aragonite sand the water had a good amount of buffering capacity.
@fashionbarbie74 жыл бұрын
@@KaveManAquatics Oh okay perfect because I purchased a 55G (should've waited) but guess what Kev..No one warned me about the "fish binge" that comes with this hobby (I saw your video after I bought my tank) so now of course I want a 150G tank to add as many as the tank allows while not making my babies uncomfortable of course but since I have African Cichlids and they are all males I know I need to crowd them up a bit. I have everything that you have literally down to vitamins lol So whenever I am ready for that big change, I def will be reaching out to your page and watching these videos again and again until I can change tanks with my eyes closed lol. Although I'm a beginner, I want to own an aquarium room one day so I have to bust my behind now and learn as much as I can :)
