There's an old saying that says it's a lot more fun to drive a slow motorcycle fast, then it is to drive a fast motorcycle slow. This is true whether it's a car or motorcycle. Ringing out a bike and not having to give up your license for it is a great thing, and therefore, my point is that this does not have to be a beginner's motorcycle, it can be a motorcycle for somebody who wants to have a lot of fun getting every last ounce of power out of the bike and not getting themselves in trouble. It's much like a Mazda Miata. Get me out and never had a lot of power, but you could ring its neck and it would come back for more and you would still have your license with you.

My first motorcycle was a Honda CB400, bought new in 1979, it was my only bike for nine years. I've got a bit of an arched brow when I see ads saying new riders have "outgrown" their Ninja 300s/R3s/CB300 in just a few hundred miles. These motorcycling prodigies will likely outgrow the Ninja 400 just as quickly, I suspect.
@GT6SuzukaTimeTrials6 жыл бұрын
On the street, there's no such thing as outgrowing a bike. The last time I checked, the maximum speed limit in most of the country is 65 mph which any bike bigger than 125cc is capable of.
@kleinbottled796 жыл бұрын
When most people say 'outgrow' they simply mean the bike doesn't scare them when accelerating in a straight line anymore. They certainly are not saying they can ride the bike to 95+% of it's potential; which would be the actual point when more bike would help them progress their skills. Lotta people ultimately learning slower 'cause they want power.
@BurningBroadcast6 жыл бұрын
The problem with the smaller bikes with low horsepower isn't really outgrowing them, but it's more so they absolutely suck on the highway. The CBR300 for example has much less horsepower than the Ninja 400. I feel like this will definitely help. Having 45-50 horsepower is perfect, as it will allow you to do Highway speeds (130km/h here in Europe) without maxing it. Atleast, that was my problem using the CBR300 on a test ride, it just was too little oomph for highways. I use a GS 500 F now, which is my first bike, it has 50 horsepower and i'm very happy with it. Never has this felt as too little or whatever.

I never understand why people like you getting triggered when people call them beginners bike. That's what they're all motorcycle brands make them for that purpose to be a gateway for younger or new riders who interested in being sport riders it's a fact. It doesn't mean that you can't enjoy small bike on the track I myself own rc390 track bike but my everyday bike is zx14. What i don't understand is why should grown ass man ride small bike as his everyday bike unless he is very short, There is much better options for grown man if you're not interested in power. Like ninja/z/vulcan 650. mt07 cbx/cb/cbr500/650. They're made with better parts and fit adult men much better. I don't care about how much power or cc your bike got. People who judge you just because of that are usually skilless squids who probably fall behind to a much less powerful bike on the twisty roads. But i do find it silly to see grown ass men ride small bike that doesn't fit him.

@Nick B I agree. Way to much shit is talked about when it comes to beginners bikes. When I talk to people about starting to ride the only question I ask is when you think about riding and having fun what does it look like. I wasted years and money on cruisers that looked sexy when one day via a fluke I rode a sport touring bike and fell in love. I always thought sport bikes were ugly and touring bikes were big and ugly...now I think they are the best combo out there. Decide what you want to do then get the bike to fit that dream.

Out here we have Ninja 650 and Royal Enfield Conti/Interceptor 650 both restricted to A2. Although we still stick to 125-250cc as beginner bikes
@kutykutyka5 жыл бұрын
Nick B , for my own sake I'd find the key to be totally afraid of the machine. Keep fun for straight line accelerations, and take my time with the turns on a 600cc. Practicing clutch control , go through round abouts a lot, etc. You make one mistake on a 600 and your ride could be over. I rode bicycles fast as a kid, than bought 50cc bikes because that was all I could afford in Europe. I don't regret it. I live in the Usa now, have owned 14 bikes from Kawasaki versys 650 to Yamaha fz-10 and Africa Twin CRF1000L and so on. I enjoy riding but as a beginner on a 600 with limited skills your bike can definitely start going straight in a turn. Many youtube videos show it. Being smart and taking it easy a disciplined person can start on a 600 but most people have no patience to go slowly on a fast bike. I ride my new fz-09 these days, it's not easy to drag behind gramma doing 25mph on a 35mph limit road :D but as a beginner on a fast bike that's exactly what you need to be able to keep riding when the white starting to show in your hair.

I agree that at $5K it cannot be beat (same for its sibling the Z400). I find it odd that some reviewers still prefer the R3, when this bike is more CCs at low weight and low cost with features like ABS and preload adjust shock. It seems to revolve around the fact that while the Ninja has that nameplate it has less aggressive riding position - as pointed out in this review. But that's because this IS supposed to be still an entry level bike that you can grow with, etc. and most people are going to take it on back roads or short commute rather than the track. If someone wants an aggressive seating position go with the RC390 (and pay more and have more maintenance costs). The R3 or MT03 might appeal to me but the cost difference is only $500?? That's a win for Kawa. Strangely, I hear good things about the CB/CBR300 - when they are mentioned at all - but it seems to be just average at everything and still in same price, so again a win for Kawa. Just like the Ninja 250 set the standard for decades, the N400 and Z400 likely will again.
@BrandinooWOW5 жыл бұрын
Main reason for the displacement bump most likely is because the nearest competitor to the ninja 300 was the CBR500R which was just a bigger more powerful bike. This basically matches it perfectly on output now and is a much closer competitor

Love mine, I wanted to add something small with decent power just to scramble around on. As for beginners, I really don't suggest anything less than 40hp if you want something more than inner city. It handles great, something first time riders can grow into and may own much longer than a lower powered heavy machine. Interstate riding is not a problem, just be responsible. 2 up riding is always another story.

1:44 is patently absurd. I put 60,000 miles on a 2009 Ninja 250 as my sole transportation over the course of four years. Never once felt like it wasn't enough bike for my daily in city usage. I lost count how many times I rode the freeway between Tucson and Phoenix. It handled the 75mph freeway just fine with enough top end left over to pass. There really isn't any way to "outgrow" even a 250R. If you are "outgrowing" it, then you're using it wrong.

Best beginner bike is a use motorcycle. More likely you will drop the bike at some point. (When I mean beginner I mean fresh off the classroom and permit) This motorcycle would be good for an advance rider to have lots of fun. Put it this way, enough power to kill your self if you are not careful. I would recommend a use bike and move on once you master riding for at least a year. Be safe out there.

Was point 1 on the press briefing "don't mention KTM" C'mon man we all know why this bike exists - just like the R3 was made to catch up to the ninja 300, the Ninja 400 exists 100% because KTM's 390 was getting lumped into 300cc sports bike comparisons. It's no accident that this bike is like 1 or 2 numbers better than the 390 on everying. It was a point proving exercise to bring back the title and keep the new rider market buying green not orange. There's nothing wrong with that, and it doesn't impact if it's a good or bad bike, but don't pussy foot about it just because Kawi gave you a day out.

Even before the video I knew that this is a great beginner bike, not only great, it's actually perfect! How do I know? Because I started on a 650 v twin naked bike, and I was fine, and am still doing fine almost 4 years later, was it the best choice to begin on? Not exactly, but I grew into it pretty well. This Ninja 400 on the other hand seems perfect to me, you start on it and it is limited to 44 or 45 hp as some of you may have seen a dyno chart, the top flattens, someone said that unlimited it would make 50hp, and when you feel up for it and need more power, a full exhaust and nice fuel controller would keep you going, I'd say you'd keep this bike for years to come, I'd love to buy one as well to add to my 2 650's, but let me just wait until there's no teething issues, as I am lucky to not be a new rider that can't wait to get his hands on a new bike, hah!

I learn to rode on a KTM RC390 2017, brand new bike, learn by myself, I drop the bike on the first day and provably dropped 6 times, always standing still. I sold it after more than 1 and a half of daily riding and more than 6 thousand miles on it. I want a new bike but new 600cc are pretty expensive so to me it's either going for a 1000cc for the money or buying again a small bike, but after the RC390, I think that the smaller bikes will let me waiting more.

I'm torn between this bike and MT 07. I would appreciate your help so please take a minute to read where my dilemma is coming from. I'm looking for a first bike and I'm just about to finish my rider course. I have no prior experience. The course is about 20 hours, 10 of which riding in city traffic (traffic jam all day long). I spent first 10 hours on Yamaha ybr 125, mostly doing techniques in a parking lot and very few in the traffic. The bike felt like a bicycle, only less stable at low speeds. It also stalled very often if it wasn't given a fair amount of throttle. Within a few hours I was able to do all the required techniques. Then I moved to MT 07 which is the bike I have to take my exam on. As soon as I sat on that bike, it felt as if it was made for me. I'm 5'11, 185 lbs, somewhat athletic build. It felt more stable, never stalled and I was able to do all the techniques with ease. Riding it on the street was a blast, although I never went over 70 km/h (remember, I'm in a riding school :)). I must admit, it felt like I was going 200 km/h. I'm 35, been driving a manual transmission sports car for over a decade and I understand how a clutch works, how to engine brake etc. I know that riding is different from driving, but it definitely helped me to use the clutch on the bike. Most of my riding will consist of commuting (city riding, stop and go traffic, trafic jam every day) to and from work which is about 20 km both ways. Occasionally, say every other weekend, I'm planning to take a couple of hours on some curvy roads near the city (say 100 - 150 km at most both ways). Reading and watching most reviews about both bikes, most seem to recommend Ninja 400 over MT 07 because the latter is too torquey. Yes it is a rocket comparing to ybr 125, but other than that I don't have a frame of reference and unfortunately I can't test ride Ninja. The price difference between the two 2018 models is only 1000 Euros. I'm also planning to keep the bike for a long time, I barely got permission from my wife to buy a bike, I don't think I'd have another chance any time soon. So, for my intended riding and my limited skill set, is one better than the other or I can't go wrong with either of these? Thank you very much for helping me out.
@RevZilla6 жыл бұрын
In your case, you're probably fine with the MT-07. You have a good head on your shoulders, so you're less likely to give the throttle too much. Take your time to get comfortable with the bike, and you should be ok. -DrewZilla

I've ridden the 300 on the track and a 400 on the street. It is perfectly adequate as a beginner bike. If you have any ideas about maybe doing a track day, I'd get this over the CBR-500R.

I sat on this bike at the London bike show and it felt great. For our market in the U.K., it’s a strange one as you can take-provided you are 24 years of age or over-a test where the requirement is 595cc at least. If you under 24, the bike has to be 395cc at least. I can see the ninja falling into that limited bracket, though for us old guys at 24+, that’s just passed on a MT07, I don’t see the appeal of the Ninja 400, it feels a step backwards as a first big bike. 😕.

I'm on an Iron 883 & I'm looking into a sport bike. I'm between this & the R3. I want something comfortable (Although I know it won't be as comfy as my Iron), something comfortable on the highway & some twisties. Based on the research I've made, supposedly the 400 is more comfortable than the R3? I'm not doing anything on a track. Just joyrides. I found myself kind out outgrowing the Iron quickly. I've been riding for a little more than a year now. I've also found myself kneeing down the Iron like an idiot because I want more lean angle and quicker around corners. I'm more about speed on corners than speed in a straight. Nimble and quick is better for me than massive HP & speed, which is why I think the 400 or the R3 kind of fits my needs. Thoughts anyone?

Had a chance to ride this a few days ago at bike week. It feels like it's geared a little tall. It's quick enough from 0-60 but slow from 0-35.

GREAT video editing! How about this compared to a lightly used 500 for the same price? I think 350-400 is the perfect size bike for most beginners, but there's still room for the high-revving 250 twins, like the 90s Ninja 250. Those too have no problem going 70-75 and will never get away from you.

For the same price, the 400 is probably the better option compared to the older Ninja 500. -DrewZilla

I'm so envious of your prices. The Ninja 400 will set me back 11000 usd in Norway..

I see that the price for one in Sweden is 5700 euros... why dont you go to Sweden and buy one from there? Or are the taxes to get it registered in Norway high? This is what I would do if I were you but thankfully I live in a country part of the EU... even tho its not that grate

Everyone likes to talk about if it's a good "beginner " bike and forgets that one reason women don't ride is we are shorter and weight less (on average). The Ninja 400 is a great option for a girl who doesn't want a Harley UltraLow

I really really want a motorcycle. This one has been my dream since I was a kid, but the thing is on the freeway it's happened to me twice that I'm on the freeway and debree hits my car. Once it was a huge magazine, the other a metal ring. I just don't know if I should get a bike, if I had been on a bike I would be dead. Any suggestions? I need help.
@tmcalis5665 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan...if you are going to ride "scared" you should not ride. Your mindset has to be "correct". Meaning, yes, there are risks involved, but instead you should be focusing on defensive riding skills and watching other drivers/riders, also scanning and being aware of your surroundings. These are the same skills that drivers in cars should be doing as well. Nothing has changed. All you can do is prepare the best you can, and have a positive outlook and get better in your maneuverability skills, as well as always wearing proper gear. Build your confidence in riding on less travelled highways/streets first, before you start to tackle the heavily-travelled roads. Don't let anyone push you beyond your comfort zone, ever. With constant practice, your confidence will strengthen and you will be so comfortable with your bike that you can then focus on the other potential issues that all riders face. Hope this helps! :)

Gsx250 is an amazing bike in its own way. I come from riding lots of really fast bikes. I carved the mountains on a gsx and it was crazy fun. Bike took globs of abuse. I even dumped it on a trail where black water river ran across. Totally submerged it while running. Rode it 25 minutes home with the crank case and air box full of water. Crank case was so full it squirted out when I pulled the dipstick. No issues at all afterwards. Compression numbers are spot on. No visible wear on the top end. I used to bang it off the limiter for miles everyday. Bike is slow but I could average 90-95mpg and beat on it relentlessly.

Could you explain where the weight savings came from? What was lightened or removed to drop 20lbs despite the increased displacement? (I assume based on the price this couldn't have been accomplished using carbon fiber or magnesium components)

What is your impression of engine tractability, from low rev, and low speeds, without having to wring it out? Torquey? Needs revs all the time? Lows? Mids? I would ride suburbia, with occasional highway (60-70mph max)

I am torn between this one and CB300F as my first bike. Found great deals for both. Anyone know from experiences How’s the mpg of the ninja? I will primarily use it for 20mile roundtrip commuting with a max allowed speed of 60mph. I want something gas efficient but also something that will be fun to take out on the weekends. Any insight would be appreciated.
@RevZilla5 жыл бұрын
At 60 mph, both are super efficient, so I'd go for the 400 honestly. On Fuelly, the average is 56.7 mpg. The smaller Honda gets 62-65 average. -DrewZilla
