2018 Kawasaki Ninja 400: Five Things You Need to Know

Kawasaki may have just found the sweet spot with its new Ninja 400. At a glance, the new motorcycle has undergone a substantial weight reduction treatment, a displacement boost of 103cc, and a sexy styling redesign - all while remaining at the exact same price point. Non-ABS models start at $4,999 while ABS is an additional $300. Kawasaki was out for blood when it went back to the drawing board for its new entry-level motorcycle.
When Kawasaki started to feel the stark competition from bikes like Yamaha’s R3 and KTM’s RC390, they got to work in order to “take back what was theirs,” according to Kawi. That would be the lightweight entry-level sportbike category. With one look at the side by side spec chart, it’s pretty obvious they have done so. The 2018 Kawasaki Ninja 400 will be a force to be reckoned with in the lightweight sportbike class.

Kawasaki hitting home runs with the 400. I had motorcycles most my life. Now that I'm older I dont need crazy speed. I used to have a Cb1 400cc and loved that thing. Went on to bigger bikes but always missed the 400. So in 2019 I purchased a Ninja 400. Still riding it as a daily and some weekend fun and I couldn't be happier. Thank you Kawasaki for awesome small displacement bikes that no other manufacturer comes close to competing with.

I feel like this video really comes up short in terms of the topic and the way things are described. One of the common misconceptions of the bike is that Taller/Average sized riders won't be comfortable with it's seating and peg position. This just isn't true. I actually own a 2018 Ninja 400 and I'm 6' 3" (190.5cm) tall and weigh 220 Lbs (100kg), and I'm perfectly comfortable. My legs don't feel cramped at all. That said, the seat is a little hard. Even short, slim riders in our Facebook group (Kawasaki Ninja 400 USA) are commonly making this claim. Also, you mention the seat height and suspension, yet failed to point out the fact that the factory shock/spring has an adjustable collar that allows you to raise and lower the rear of the bike (and seat) to some degree from the stock position, much like a coilover. You also give a lot of descriptive words about the engine, but not any actual specs aside from the engine displacement. You failed to mention that the compression ratio is higher than the average parallel twin, and is more closely relative to the Kawasaki ZX-6R in terms of compression. For example, the Ninja 650's parallel twin is 10.8:1 compression, which is "low compression" in the bike world, and is also partially why it has a low rumble sound and turns fewer RPMs. Whereas the ZX-6R straight 4's 12.9:1 compression ratio is considered "high compression". The Ninja 400 falls almost in the middle of the two @ 11.5:1 compression, which is considered "high compression", but at the same time, is factory tuned to achieve it's best performance with 87 octane. The engine of the Ninja 400 also has an almost supersport sound to it. It has a low pitch similar to the 650 when climbing through the RPM's lower range, but seemingly "wakes up" and screams through the higher range more like a supersport. Also, please work on your audio output levels, or invest in a better shotgun mic. Your levels are peaking, causing that nasty distortion in the vocals. I don't mean to boast or brag, but if I had the budget that you guys have, I could produce a far more professional video. But don't take my word for it, you can head over to my channel and watch the many videos I've made on the 400 that I own, so far. Almost all of which were rushed and cranked out from filming to upload in less than 6 hours. They are also far more detailed, much like my post here. Also, don't get me wrong. I don't mean any disrespect. You guys do a lot of things that I simply don't have the connections, skills, or general abilities to do myself. I just feel like your videos could be produced, shot, mixed, and edited better. One more thing, please lose the early 2000's fonts. I feel like I'm watching KZbin videos on a single core CPU with 256mb of RAM on a massive CRT monitor, every time those MS Paint looking fonts, colors, and effects pan over the screen.

First off, thanks for this detailed (and mostly kind) reply. I'm not going to address everything you mention, but here are a couple thoughts: - Comfort is relative (to a degree). I never said the ergonomics were awful, but I still think the seat-to-peg ratio is a little high for *my taste*, especially compared to other bikes in this class. Similar to how the Z125's pegs feel higher than the Grom's in my opinion. While I'll agree the seat is a little hard, would you agree with me that there's not much space to scoot back to get in a tuck before hitting the passenger seat? - The collar on the rear shock. Are you referring to the preload adjuster? Adjusting preload on the shock is not meant to be an adjustment for seat height. It's meant to place the shock in its optimal operating range, depending on the weight of the rider. At 220lbs, you are also likely outside of the optimal operating range of the stock spring/shock combination. This is why you might have heard the term "have the bike sprung for your weight". Adjusting preload for seat height purposes could affect handling. - These "5 Things You Need To Know" videos are meant to be quick overviews of the motorcycle. Getting into the finer points about engine specs, including compression ratios between other models, doesn't really fit into that mold. We also do full reviews as well. Check Motorcycle.com for the full scoop on all kinds of bikes. - Budget? HAHAHA. You'd probably be shocked with how little we have to work with. That said, I'm not going to lie - our audio could be better. I checked out your page, and you know what? Your audio is great. I also checked out one of your links. Is Helequip yours? - Constructive criticism is always welcome. We're human just like the rest of you, and getting into an online shouting match really doesn't do anyone any good. We're always striving to improve, and posts like these help us. Cheers.

I’m a 5’-4” lady and this bike fits me perfectly. The main reason I didn’t go with a larger displacement bike is simply that I felt like my body is too small to safely handle, particularly at low speeds. So if you’re on the shorter side and using this as an everyday commuter with highway capability, it’s been excellent for the last year for me.

I own a 2019 ninja 400 and I agree it's a great bike. It's quick but not super fast. It's very light and comfortable on longer rides. The exhaust and rear fairing are hideous but simple to modify. And a good wind gust will push it but it's fun and great fuel mileage as well

I started on a 250 Ninja and loved it. When I moved out of state I upgraded to a CBR600f4i which I loved. Now I'm on a VFR800 and seriously considering going back down to this 400. I loved how light the 250 was, I'm just a little worried about the ergos like you mentioned. The old 250 with the banana seat you could ride in any position you want and it was comfortable, this looks more restricting.

Thank you so much! I appreciate the insight. I’m looking for a bike and I’d love if you could discuss the Ninja 300 to 400 via comparison including suspension on the streets with potholes, price and other oddities your eyes, body and overall experience will tune into versus someone like me who sees a brand I’m familiar with and know the handling. This week 8/1/2019, I arranged to put money down on a bike, a Kawasaki 300 all black and a full body kit. I don’t care to see the bare parts since I saw my cousin’s skin melt away as she mistakenly laid her bare leg on the exhaust pipe. Of course I ride with a leather jacket and boots. I take safety very seriously. The 300 Ninja is due to be my first bike. It’s still too tall for me. I’m 5’1 and I felt uncomfortable even with the extra height. So they’re offering to lower it 2” for me though it’s been lowered and I do worry about the casing and suspension if the suspension is that lame that my body will feel pebbles. That puts me off. I’ve been a passenger on Ducati’s to Honda’s with heavier owners who handled the bikes like a charm so I don’t recall discomfort on that level. Their bikes fit them therefore as a passenger I was comfy. Can you discuss models that fit which weight class and why it’s important? I totally disrespect owners who buy bikes unfit for their mass & height, more so their weight class. Better to save up to get the motorcycle that fits you than spend $1,000 to $3,500 for a used bike who’s suspension you’ll wreck but also a newbie to enthusiasts advanced sports bike rider knows it’s wrong and laughs. I know for sure this poses a danger with a rider on the back: added weight off-balances the bike as well as shifting up to increase MPH puts more strain on the suspension. One can feel the sluggishness. So I’m keen on getting what fits me but also a bike that doesn’t break the bank should I take a tumble! Yet, new rider status aside I still want the best riding experience possible. I want a bike that fits me but also allows for a passenger where I don’t have to worry about accidentally dropping them while say turning & exiting and dipping low because our combined weight lowers the bike. I’ve no intent on offering rides for a year or more. Also what’s your take on the new automatic motorcycles? I see no beauty in them or requirement of skill. I never owned a manual car but my charger R/T AWD when in manual you felt the difference even though it’s clutchless. It’s like the wheels sang before taking off! I’ve had some fun w cars, SUVs, quads, dirt bikes (though I don’t care for dirt bikes talk about ouch!), jet skis & bikes. I now drive a Dodge RWD Durango Citadel. I have to say I hate RWD. I wish car makers would just make all cars AWD. Breaking RWD takes some practice. I’m positively unhappy with it. Though it does have power and I fully use it!

Great points Troy! I'm seriously considering this bike along with the Ninja 650, CBR500R and CBR650F for next bike. I also love the Yamaha FZ6R but it doesn't have ABS and appears to be discontinued for 2018. Anyone know what will become of that bike? After owning a Ninja 250 some years ago, along with a few other bikes more recently, I should say the Ninja 500 would feel like a truck compared to this 400. Newer motorcycles in this segment are not just bells and whistles, they are way more sophisticated and nimble. But of course, some kind of investment needs to be made to enjoy the new stuff.

Couple other points. 1.) The Kawi green is nice and all, but the Plasma Blue is just straight up SEXY. Totally blows away all the other color options this year. 2.) ALL Ninja 400's have ABS. How does a non-abs Ninja 400 have rear ABS when the ABS unit under the fuel cell is missing. The rear brake caliper goes directly to the rear brake reservoir and the front brake caliper goes straight to the front brake reservoir. Anyone looking at a schematic on Bikebandit can see that the non-ABS does not have an ABS unit that is also the reason the Non-ABS version weighs about 4lbs lighter, and only has two brakes lines vs the 4 lines the ABS model has

Bankiewshaphrang War Height doesn’t have anything to do with it; it’s your inseam that counts. There are many 5’9” people who have trouble riding bikes because they have short legs. Then there are short riders who have no problems.

Would you try a Suzuki sv 650 3rd gen ? I'm 6.2 tall and 135 lb , very new to riding a motorcycle and I love ninja 400 as it is very light weight with plenty of fun but the only concern is that it feels very small , I been thinking. About Suzuki sv650 3rd gen, ill appreciate it if you could try it and give us a view. Thank you

Kawasaki should manufacture a Ninja zx4r with inline 4 engine just like the old times. This ninja 400 is not a baby version of zx10r but a baby version of ninja 1000.

Didn't they stop making them because they were comparable in price to 600cc super sports? 600 SS's aren't flying off the shelves as is.

My wife bought one for her to learn on and it is really fun but a big problem with hers is getting into neutral is almost impossible. I have been riding for over a decade and have 2 bikes myself so it isn't a fluke. I drove it home from dealer and did the first couple hundred miles to break in and it still isn't any better. When you are coming down through the gears and try to go from 2nd to 1st, you could almost breathe on the lever and it bangs down into one. Very disappointing and nobody has had any solution for it so far.

@jackalo626 It is a common thing that when a motorcycle runs straight over 50 miles it's engine reached its hottest point and so coming down through the gears specially from 2nd to 1st is not that smooth as from 6th to 5th, from 5th to 4th, etc. At this point is where the best adjustments can be made in the clutch by tighteniing or loosening the knot at the end of the clutch cable. Try it! It's a Do-It-Yourself thing. Have a nice day!

Some bikes are a PIA to find neutral on. I had a 95 sportster that I had to hold the clutch in, put it in 1st gear, shut off the engine, then fish for neutral. Darn it I know it is between 1st and 2nd I just need 10 tries to find it. When it rolls freely you are good.

You just speak about the ABS light turning off and leaving you without ABS. When I purchase my ninja 400 before I left the showroom floor they told me when your ABS light cuts off just bring the bike back wheel fix it even though you still have brakes, which leads me to believe there's a problem with the ABS on a ninja 400.

Can this bike comfortably sit at 80-85mph on the highway? If so, how far is it from redlining?

Highway comfort is yours to decide. Redlines at 12k. Do you need it higher than that?
@jonasv19
@jonasv19 5 жыл бұрын
80-85mph would be around 8k rpms. A little buzzy, but the bike can do it all day. The question is really if it bothers you to ride at a reasonably high rpm for a long time? If you do long highway rides daily, I would personally look at a ninja 650 instead, or do a sprocket change on the 400.

Would you believe, I am trading my 2013 ZX6R for a Ninja 400, mainly because the license plate for a 600cc sport bike is 1400$ (next year it will be 1700$) per year in Quebec/Canada while the Ninja 400 is 420$ per year. I also prefer the ninja 400 look and ergonomics.

MarquisDeSang YUP, I've heard the same from other Canadian riders...they make it hard to be a motorcyclist up North. Feels like Southeast Asia and their heavy taxation on any bigger than 250 cc motos.

Brandon Lucas Quebec is somewhat unique in that the plates, which are renewed every year, also include government run liability insurance. This makes the 'plates' cost more then any other province, however the private insurance for full coverage above liability only is typically much less...

slightly off on who came up with production sportbike champion bikes, they started back in the seventies with the RD and cb 400s. it's way too bad that these "todays" bikes on and offroad have such a short use life as bikes that came out in the early years lasted 40 years and still kicking hard. today it's all big sound for a lame short ride. off road bikes last 6 months now.
