Kawasaki ZX6R J2 2001 Cold Start with Micron Exhaust Sound

Just a quick video to show how well the bike starts from cold - first start in over a week. Sounds OK with the Micron exhaust but something is not 100% and the revs do hang a little so I want to balance the carbs soon and this will make for a good comparison.

Starts so well - I do the same no throttle full choke routine but it take 3-4 mins on choke to warm up before it idles fine. 🤣

It sure does. I keep it plugged into an Optimate 4 too which has kept the same battery perfect for about 12 years

Your model is the j2 and its recommended fuel mixture screws turns out is 3 what have you got them at are you higher or lower than 3 turns out my 2002 636 a1p is recommended to start at 2 1/4 and go either side of that setting but I have them on 3 turns at moment to get a nice idle

Good question - it’s been years since I last stripped down the carbs that I can not remember but if that is the recommended setting then that’s what I would have done. Stripping carbs used to be an annual task but since I discovered “Mechanic In A Bottle” I’ve not needed to do it.

Hello there, do you remember the main and pilot jet sizes that work well with this exhaust?

Hi Rishi, I’m sorry I haven’t got a clue. The exhaust came already on the bike. I will be doing a DynoJet upgrade soon though.

How much choke do you use if any when the weather is warm I'm trying to get my mixture screws right I have a 2002 636 a1p Thanks

Hi Anthony, I always put choke on full to start from cold. If the air is warm enough then revs will rise almost straight away so I knock the choke off fully then.

Hi, they are no longer made from what I can see but just had a quick search on eBay and found someone has a load of these new and they come with the removable baffle which I never had. Search for item number 254104325620

Hi Malcolm, it was so long ago it’s hard to remember, 14 years or so. Maybe eBay? If you Google “gpt gi3pnp” there seems to be a few places still selling it.

The one above appears to be plug and play which may mean bike specific. I did have to set mine up by going through the gears on a paddock stand in the garage (hair raising!!) so “gpt gi3001” might be the one I bought.

Why oh why are you flooding it with extra fuel? You don't need that much to get it warmed up you know? It's a simple, full choke on for about a minute, turn it down to half choke for another 20 seconds, turn off, start to pull back the throttle and if it stalls , start it again and guaranteed if you start it without the choke and let it tick over and warm it up it'll be purring sooner than you think, you don't need to flood it though
