A shorter edit of my encounter with a great white.
For those wondering, the kayak is 4m long. The thing at the back of my kayak isn't a bait bag, it is a sea anchor that slows down my drift to make fishing easier. I'm not mad about the encounter. Seeing sharks out there is normal, although this encounter was quite different and a lot more personal.

What's more crazy, is we know more about space than the ocean. Still, we don't respect it. Even the shark can't fully penetrate his own world, or get fully lost in an abyss. Ocean terrifies me. I respect it, admire it, love marine life. But lost @ sea? I rather go face to face with any land predator.

Some people take this as an "OMFG what is he thinking fishing out in the open seas like that" Sharks being my complete nightmare and the worse possible animal on the planet I could've ever dreamt of facing... see this video as: "Actually, just see things as they are and not worse than what it really is.... its evident that the shark had no interest in the Kayak and not all encounters end in blood. Its amazing to see nature as it really is and not tainted by the movies like 'The Meg' or 'Jaws'. Each to their own... but this for me is more empowering than fear. Good video capture.

Totally. I took up surfing after swimming in Western Australia ocean and realising my fear was too much. Since then now when im in the water I actually assume that there are big ones always around and I find that more realistic than 'they are hardly ever here but when they are they attack'. I even saw one leap out of the water vertically at Tea Tree bay a month or so ago, and thought about what my surfing cousin told me when I asked him about whether he leaves the water..."it depends how good the surf is". This day the surf was good...As for drones, I dont wanna know. When my time comes my time comes, bringing tech into the ocean to clutch onto mortality isnt my idea of a good time.

The shark was just curious. I've had plenty of shark encounters in my fishing kayak over the years. Nothing quite as intense as that one, but close enough. The sport is as risky as you care to make it. He did the right thing. Sat there quietly. No paddling to excite the shark. No blood in the water. A quick check over and it was gone again. Memorable experience.

The eeriest feeling is knowing that they are invisible once only 5 metres away, they can feel you and see you from much much further away. Especially if your heart is racing and you have a fairly decent wound or cut (it's not necessarily the blood, it's the electromagnetic pulses from your heartbeat that escapes through the wound or cut that the shark picks up even easier). all you have to do is look at them and bump them and they won’t attack you. divers don’t get eaten. surfers don’t get swallowed whole. they get a limb taken off occasionally because it looks like a turtle or seal. It’s incredibly rare. Humans are the monsters not sharks.

@@davidkaplan5517 mate when you see one in the water you go immediately into fight or flight instinct, which obviously flight is the only answer. There is nothing more horrifying then seeing that fin and shape in the water, many surfers have been completely eaten, by say a bull shark/tiger shark or a curious juvenile Great white. They aren't restricted by diet, if they want you they'll have you. Divers are generally safer as they know not to dive in murky water or breeding ground areas, surfers are unlucky as we are on the surface of the water, usually salty un clear water. As sharks are ambush predators they strike hard from underneath, thinking we are a Turtle, seal or whatever. My point is unless you're out there in the ocean regularly, you'll know that you won't have the chance to just bump them or go near them because you will never know they're there if they want you, the shark you see is generally the one that already knew you were there and isn't interested.

Attracted five "revved up" reef sharks once to my small craft. Were ere circling when returned from freediving. Had anchored in sand, middle of Molokini Crater. No idea there'd been an hour of slow drip of baitwater from igloo drain on fishing cooler used day prior, (planned to return unused bait to the ocean after diving). Craft was 18 foot outrigger "proa" not a kayak (but presented same problem when returned from free-diving with a new girlfriend to find sharks circling the watercraft that we need to get home). After escorting terrified GF to Shoreline reef (cut leg. of course), swam back, dove deep and "porpoised" up onto the outrigger through the middle of the circling sharks. No joke, scared shirtless. Threw bait in opposite direction of shore/ GF to distract, went to pick her up not realizing sharks followed after feeding them and it took 5 min of reassurance "no sharks" to get GF to try get back aboard. Stuck my head in looked oceanward to making sure was clear, convinced her to jump in and climb onto outrigger hull. Shark circling the perimeter wasn't visible, was first thing she saw in her mask ~ ten feet, swimming towards her. Last date. Moral of Story: NEVER SWM WHERE YOU CHUM

You guys are CRAZY,, i was fishing halibut in my 16ft cape horn in Alaska,,, we had about a 30 ft male killer whale take my chum bag on the anchor rope,,, his dorsal fin went up and flopped all the way back down, HUGE, i was tied off to the front cleet, if he had dived, we would have went flying,, scared the shit out of us,,,,,,,,,,you always need a bigger boat,,, dont forget that

Hi there, I'm no expert in shark and I can't identify this one. Just know that according to the US National Ocean Service; "Only about a dozen of the more than 300 species of sharks have been involved in attacks on humans." That been said, what an amazing and maybe scary encounter.

i deal with great white and hammer heads sometimes here in la jolla cali san diego in my kayak.. they dont do anything to you unless you have a fish reeling in they want to eat and if you have some live bait in your live well that you dangling outside, im sure thats what the shark was sniffing., i keep live bait on the kayak because of that lol..still scary tho but i got use to it.. the hammer heads tend to follow be cause i think people feed them when they bleed and cut the fish head when they catch it and got smart to follow kayak fisherman thinking for a free meal

Absolutely nuts to be in a fishing kayak with sharks. Chumming the water with baitfish or you catch a fish..then you have company! You get what you ask for. I windsurfed in Hawaii for several years. Always a fall away from a great white to a tiger shark. Risks!

No chumming going on there. Using artificial lures. Sharks are always around and rarely are interested in people despite thousands going in the ocean in my area.
