I just hate that Selena constantly references “using her platform for good” and when the time comes for her to do exactly that, she doesn’t… She cherry picks which issues she speaks out on, with her being VERY vocal for Ukraine but suddenly “a post won’t change anything” when it comes to Palestine and BLM.
@MoonChildLux11 ай бұрын
Palestine is a country of a bunch of homophobes and sexists, They belive both gays and women shouldn't have any rights. Nobody should be supporting them. When they open their arms and hearts and are more accepting of the LGBT and Women's rights, others will be more accepting of them. As for BLM she isn't black and therefore doesnt owe the movement anything. And maybe when black people stop making fun of white people on tiktok, youtube and other platforms, we can really start talking about equality. Because if a white person said A SINGLE ONE of the jokes black people make about white people they would be cancelled in a heartbeat. Also the black race is the most homophobic and racist race of literally any other race. Probably because they are the most religious race. But that is no excuse.

"Cherry picking"?? Uh yeah, it's called personal autonomy and that's exactly her right to do! Choosing to use your personal platform to do what you think is social good, based on your core values, personal beliefs, and what really matters to you, does not obligate anyone to use their platform for EVERY social good that matters to everyone else too! She didn't sign up for that! You've seriously set these distorted, irrational rules that you only apply to her, just to undermine her. It's using extremely flawed thinking that's invalidating the value of what she's done on the premise that she's not doing MORE. That's insane! There are always going to be causes out there that are tragically underserved, but it's not her or any other celebrity's responsibility to save them. Undermining her efforts to change things because she isn't changing ALL the things it's just creating a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" circumstances for her it's just callously unfair!
@Nina-hz9vv11 ай бұрын
@@lblincoe2094 First of all, personal autonomy doesn't automatically mean what she did is right. We have personal autonomy to do whatever we want, and then bear the consequences of what we all choose to do. She is a public figure and the public disagrees with her take on Palestine and Israel. It's to be expected. Should the public just be quiet when they sense something was unfair? No, the public has a right to react just as she has a right to support whatever she wants. That's just how it is when you have a large audience. I personally believe it's hypocritical to speak up about Russia and Ukraine, but then take a whole different stance on another war that's just as important and devastating. It seems like a pr move to not take a stance about Palestine. That being said, it's my opinion and most of the public agrees. She can do whatever she wants, but everyone has a right to have an opinion on it as well. She has countless resources to deal with the backlash and personal autonomy to not use social media, not read the comments, not play into it. She is way more equipped to deal with this backlash than people affected by war are to deal with said war.

Has anyone noticed that some of the people who are famous today have had to “pay a price for it”. The internet starts to like them after something horrible has happened to them. Sadly, Selena is one example, but also the first ever wave of support for Hailey Bieber came after she had a stroke, Olivia Rodrigo, after being wronged in her relationship AND Sabrina Carpenter after being bullied on the internet for it. It’s like the general public views these people almost like animals in a zoo, until something horrible happens that humanises them. That’s when they get real recognition.

I very much agree with you. I see Internet giving massive attention to people who were somehow traumatized or hurt. Obviously on one hand it's good bc some of us don't have any emotional support/validation in our trauma except of online groups/recovery channels. But the problem is some of "victims" aren't interested in healing/moving on but capitalizing on attention, likes, views etc. Their audience glorifies them just bc they were "hurt", wasting all time and energy on someone who often is much more priviliged and has access to therapy etc. People escape their own issues by focusing on "supporting" someone else. That fuels the victim complex. That's why I don't trust folks who try to get audience by oversharing their diseases and capitalizing on sympathy. Your viewers aren't your therapist or doctor.

I find it funny that Selena curated her whole public persona so much in her 20s (I don't think it is a coincidence that she started to drift away from Demi right before Demi's addiction became so disastrous she almost died, and the thing with Justin was really inconsequential compared to that) and now everything is like overflowing. She didn't have a public meltdown, she didn't tell Disney to f*ck off and made that her whole personality ( a la Miley at the time), she didn't start fights, she didn't talk back, very demure and contained. All that contributed to her image as "the Pure ex-disney star", the one that wasn't screwed by the experience (which I find hard to believe since her best friend who was there with her had a WILDLY different experience and was violated in several ways, but that's my conspiracy theory brain talking), the unproblematic. Now she does not seem to be curating anything anymore, and in fact she keeps getting messier, but it's a very specific brand of messy - teenage messy. Like she was holding back all the pettiness, all the snark, for so long that it is now bursting out of her. And I don't know how much of that her image can take, even if she is the most followed person on Instagram.

I actually think they are so crazy and connect the most random things that Selena sees it and thinks its actually true and plays into it or she just comments to cause dreama, I have no idea but Hailey literally did nothing that day. I do believe they have both shaded each other in the past but Hailey was literally 18 when she started a relationship with JB.... Hailey and JB are going on 6 years of marriage, Selena shouldn't even engage with anything about them. She left the weeknd to get back with Justin and within months they were already having issues.

This internet/Instagram drama is not for me, just like one of the commenters below already wrote, for me too, the very fact that young fans/young people care and are involved in the personal lives of their favorite celebrities to the point that they argue and hate because Selena said this or that about Hailey, and Hailey is with Justin, and Selena used to be with him, etc - this whole personal drama is pathetic, immature and perfectly reflects the complete collapse of modern culture. First, people need to stop obsessing over celebrities and having parasocial relationships with them. But the most important thing - and this is where this whole problem comes from - is that people today generally put on a pedestal those who don't deserve it! Who is Selena? I'm sorry, but she is a complete mediocrity both in the sphere of music and acting, and she managed to be on top and gain fortune and fame only because today the media, and consequently people manipulated and brainwashed by the media, reward and like mediocrity. I can't think of any of Selena's songs that are unforgettable or of really great quality in terms of singing, music, or lyrics, something in the category of the masterpiece like 'Back to Black' by Amy Winehouse, 'Like a Virgin' by Madonna or 'Someone like you' ' by Adele, it just doesn't exist, because Selena is actually a very poor singer, and she is not an artist, just a marketing product for whom others write songs, she only has to package them nicely and present them, because she is a product of mass, low culture, not a real artist. The same goes for her acting. I can't remember a single role she was amazing or good in, her last show, The Only Murders in the Building is overall solid quality, but the truth is that the whole story is based on Steve Martin& Marty Short's ideas and creative process, and Selena is another pretty face there, that could easily be replaced by many other actresses. This is the problem for me with many young celebrities today who have become famous and earn millions, but actually have no talent, yet for some reason, they are worshiped. In the past, we really had better actors and better musicians, people who reached this level of fame really deserved it. Since the millennium, more and more of the so-called art in the sphere of pop culture has been in the hands of bland, talentless fools. Really, people, go outside, work on your own life, and stop simping for brainless, talentless celebs who don't deserve your money, your attention, and your energy.

I have always found Selena to be so insanely problematic but she constantly gets a pass.. idk if she has or her fans have curated this huge victim persona that always gets with the short end of the stick. Justin got married? Poor Selena. Abel got left by her and went back to his ex? Somehow also poor Selena. Hailey doesn’t have have to say her name but somehow she gets dragged for weeks. I never understood the lore, truly. And I think the way her fans treated Bella Hadid was nasty when Bella truly has never spoken about her.
@danaalexander469111 ай бұрын
Selena has opened up too much about her life and inner self - so many of her fans felt instantly entitled to be her friends. But that comes as a cost to her peace and privacy - she has become a constant topic on the Internet and social media and she broke popularity records. But her great popularity and her fans gave motivation to media, envious 'friends' and enemies to increase their own online popularity by posting negative comments and even fabricated stories about Selena. Selena has over-exposed herself to over-consumption of herself as an online product. And she cannot distance herself easily now when she is about to release a new album and has contractual obligations to promote it. This is not good for any person and especially not for a person with a compromised health. Hopefully, in 2024 she will for her own wellbeing take a well deserved and overdue break to enjoy a slower pace life away from the spotlights.

as somebody who adores selena, i do have to admit some of her recent behaviour (eg. commenting on posts) has been cringe worthy. i think it all started with her coming back to instagram this year. before, her team would manage her account meaning we wouldn’t see much of her personality outside of just promotional posts. idk cuz even before this year i would say she was mostly super likeable

She needs to go back to having her team post for her. It sucks that fans don't get that connection but she keeps digging a deeper hole for herself. I think she should turn off her comments or have it where ppl she follows are the only that can comment that way she stays out of mess but then shes commenting on random fan posts so idk.

Why the fuck would anyone /want/ some random celebrity to comment on Israel/Palestine?? Surely, vague disinterest is preferable to thinking that her own thoughts on global issues is actually meaningful? I’m not a Selena-Stan, I just don’t get why people care about her vague platitudes

I feel like this video demonizes Selena for just being a common person. It kinda predisposes that she supposed to be perfect human being great and caring for everybody's needs before her own - why tho? maybe it's us who need to stop looking at celebs like they are different kind? and take them for just people as they are?

The "I'm single" thing reminds me of my sister. She's the same age as Selena and she's been making her relationship status a big part of her personality, but I honestly think it's a coping mechanism from society's expectations of someone her age. Like, yeah it's a little cringy, but I know how people constantly nag and ask my sister about her dating life, making it sound like she has failed somehow for being single in her 30s, especially because she is a woman, and the biological clock is starting to tick. I can imagine Selena has gotten a lot of the same treatment, especially as a famous person, and I can understand how you can get a little defensive after a while. Is it annoying, yes, does it hurt anyone, no.

The part that I can’t seem to get is she was sharing so much about her journey finding God and the love for herself. Did that just go out the door? A lot of things she’s doing recently is not something a person who’s devoted to God would do, especially arguing with people online and supporting bullying.

On 13:08 I also think is ridiculous how ppl don't know what a "pick me" is. A pick me girl is a girl with internalized misogyny who puts other women down in favor of male validation, that is all. Selena's behavior online is not pick me at all, if just childish and a little cringey. People need to know a word's definition instead of just throwing it around or it will lose its meaning. Selena Gomez is not a pick me girl, she is simply looking for validation on the internet.
@Lalamary226610 ай бұрын
Her behavior is definitely desperate and cringeworthy, but not exactly pick me. It’s normal to want to be in love and to have a romantic relationship, but expressing it online in the manner she does has given me secondhand embarrassment. I still prefer her behavior over actual pick me’s who reinforce misogynistic ideals onto other women for male validation.

the people who don’t like this woman bc they love her adversary are annoying. i really sympathize with selena because of her early fame, her lupus, her public mental health issues. i think she has lived a turbulent life and a lot of it was public. i can’t imagine some of the worst days of my life being criticized and celebrated as a worthy downfall. i think she has a lot of growing to do, she needs to let go of social media, and she needs to let go of some grudges and trauma. she has a lot going for her but at the end of the day growing as a person should be on her priority list.

Some things I can agree with cause people are not perfect. But there are certain aspects I cannot understand such as being judged for being single and expressing yourself about it. For example I've been single as well for 4 years and I say it out loud, I make jokes about it, but I don't feel that this makes me a pick me, it's just my current state and experience. People that show off their relationships online or in front of other people should be as well considered pick me's? Some things are too much looked into, and I guess it's normal since they are public figures, but it's so tiring for the overall message that comes across for the people that consume social media to have all these ideas of what you should do or not do based on what the celebrities are experiencing online. It translates in the day to day conversations in an overstimulating and confusing way at times. This was just an example of how these concepts such as pick me, someone being entirely good or bad or all the other boxes really get weird nuances from which nobody understands anything anymore when these type of things are getting hyped up.
@whatcolorjunebug7 ай бұрын
I'm genuinely confused about the "pick me behavior" thing, when the it just seems to be her talking about being single. I've never heard of complaining about being single being a "pick me" behavior or even "not like other girls." Tons of other girls are single, so going on and on about being single isn't saying you aren't like other girls? I get that it could be boring and repetitive and even annoying to people, but I don't understand how that's a pick me thing? Has the term pick me evolved to include just complaining about being single and talking about wanting to be in a relationship? I thought the "pick me" thing was to act too "cool" for that, like "all girls are obsessed with wanting to be in a relationship but I'm DIFFERENT and just like having fun with the boys!" (where the pick me part is that she isn't being genuine and does actually want one of those boys to date her). Like, is Cathy from the comic a pick me now because she always whines about being single??? Disclaimer: I'm not a stan for any of the people mentioned in the video. So I'm not offended on Selena's behalf, I just don't understand this use of the term.

I agree with everything you said. I do think fans online read into everything way too much, inevitably starting drama. I think Selena heavily relies/depends on what is said about her and when things don't really go her way, she starts to spiral. She also seems to take everything said to heart and has a sort of combo of a victim and martyr complex. She truly needs to take a real break from social media and just hand things related to her brand over to her team.

I feel it’s not so much of a controversy that Selena Gomez and Demi fell apart, they just realised they didn’t have a mutual connection other then growing up doing similar shows together and that’s how they fell apart, it’s nothing to get angry about or start fights with others about. If we start looking at using other words and delving deeper into the truth of the matter, even Demi said it herself we just drifted apart, and it’s okay too find out that you don’t share similar interest with others. Demi was going through a lot at that time and I feel her anger just got the best of her when she was asked how is Selena.

Also when are we gonna stop looking for drama like with the Hayley Baldwin song she played, she could just like that song doesn’t mean that she is attacking her. But I agree their is a lot behind the scene that might happen that we don’t know about, but I think the song is just taking a bit far.

The thing that gets on my nerves, though, is that a lot of y’all (fans, media, and influencers) stayed gassing that “beef” along WITH HER, lmao. So, it’s aggravating to see y’all turn on her and pick her apart, when y’all were right there along with her CONSTANTLY harassing Hailey with the shit, lmao. So it’s natural that MAYBE she felt y’all wanted to see her act that way towards the former relationship, because y’all coddled and egged her on through it.

Personally prefer Selena's acting ( her music is too mixed for me) but yeah, her stuff with Hailey Bieber + Demi Lovato made me kinda annoyed. Demi is not the biggest supporter of women from what I've seen + has done other problematic things so I don't fully blame Selena for that particular situation. Selena & Hailey's drama, I do blame for Selena for her part and she should be held accountable for it. I'm more so mad about her treatment of Francisa. Like, she gave you an *ORGAN* ?! Plus, if the rumors about Selena drinking after the donation was done are true, that's even more messed up
@lauraboredom216810 ай бұрын
the rumors were just that rumors and Francia has debunked all the weird lies regarding HER choice to donate her kidney demi and selena just grew apart and selena has always shown demi love even after they stopped being friends and the hailey situation was just a mess in general people took it really far but she did defend her and has defended hailey multiple times before everything skyrocketed, she cant control how other people act

The kidney donor, Francesca, had a lot of interviews within which she said that Selena basically ambushed her into donating her kidney and then just made up excuses to cut her off. She also is all the time interacting with content on social media that bashes other women including Hailey so yeah I don't think we should credit her and her cheesy stories that tell her fans not to hate on Hailey when she's simultaneously fueling the drama. She's also all the time referring to her relationship with Justin for absolute no other reason than clout. She could be asked about the weather and she'll come up with something to say about him while making sure to portray herself as the damaged, hut party who wants nothing but the best for him and his wife...... I used to be a big fan of hers but honestly seems like I grew up and she didn't she's just so cringe most of the time she just won't let what happened in 2010 stay there
