It’s really a character driven show. They all are so well written and their relationships and interactions with each other are just on another level. It pulls you in and makes you wish you were part of this crew.

The episode that coined a nickname for Mal in the same way Captain America had a phrase coined after him ("Captain Tight-Pants" & "America's ass). The best part of the episode is the distraction that wasn't from River.

You noticed one of Adam Baldwin's acting tricks: even when he had no dialogue, he kept his hands busy occupied as it gave the cameraman from ignoring him in the background. You could notice in the pilot when he kept watch outside the infirmary after Kaylee was shot.

I really love how being set in the 'verse allows each episode to have such different settings as they move from planet to planet (and a couple of space stations). The show manages to be episodic, while still carrying the main thread forward, building bit by bit in the course of telling these side stories. I love every episode, but this is the point in the season where it really picks up the pace. From here on it seems like almost each one is better than the last.

Wow, you called it when you said Mal would have to fight dirty during the duel, and you even mentioned him using the sword hilt as brass knuckles. Good job! It did make me chuckle when they’re talking about Mal challenging Atherton and you immediately assumed it was going to be a dance-off! 😂

Shindig comes from an Irish expression 'seinnt-theach', meaning a house of music. Kaylee dishing mechanical convo with the fellas after the crass treatment by that pack of spoiled "Heathers" made the episode for me. Loved how stylized her personal space was decorated - even the door leading down to her bunk. She is just all kinds of cute. Plus it's nice to see that the Companion rule-book protects the women (and men) working under that legislation. Promising a black mark in the registry against a client if there's EVER any abuse served against one of their employees. I was hoping - episodes later - Atherton would come-back at some point to be a thorn in either Mal or Inara's side, but when it comes down to it he's just a "spoiled dandy' who's too used to his wealth and entitlement. 4th episode in, and this show will continue to get better - great review Elie!

I really like that despite Kaylee basically being a tomboy, she also still has that girly side to her too. It makes her more dynamic. Also, they really set Mal up to lose. Atherton just stepped on Mal's sword and the hilt broke off? What kind of cheap LARPing weapon is that? Lol

Great reaction. Jewel doesn't like strawberries. She also hated the dress. It was difficult to get in and out of. She couldn't sit down or go to the restroom without help. Mark Sheppard helped Summer get the accent down perfect.

I livecto watch character actors at work, and there are 2 fine exampkes bsck to back- the old guy who insults Banning Miller , and Larry Drake, playing Sir Warrick- they turn on the charm, just for a moment, and they can steal whatever scene they're in...

3:38 LMAO your facial expression literally explains the entire scene Inara was well cast, I never thought of her voice being soothing, but you're right. It's that ASMR companion training It's a good one. Lots of world-building, character moments, and themes, and just fun.

Badger: Marc Sheppard auditioned for the role and knocked it out of the park for the pilot. Nobody told him until the script was shot that Joss had written the role for himself. Joss also had the notion that people wearing hats were the likeliest villains, [Badger, Patience, her best shooter "nice hat!", and so on.)

In "The Train Job," Inara's clothes identified her as a person of stature, someone with money, probably from the rich inner worlds. Someone not to be trifled with. Then she identified herself as a registered companion, which would be easy to check on the equivalent of the internet (they appear to have instantaneous communication technology, which is impossible but a common SF trope). And once one person knows that she's a registered companion it isn't long before everyone knows ("Gosh! Wow!! A registered companion? Really?! That's so exciting!").

I'm glad to see you recognized Kaylee's adorable cuteness throughout this episode. Seeing this in always reminded of the Gilligan's Island burning question. "Maryann or Ginger?" Or in this case "Inara or Kaylee?" While I'm a fan of Morena I have to say Kaylee hands down. Thank goodness Zoë's a married woman else the field would be too crowded.

Inara comes from high society and considers whether to stay or go back to Serenity. Mal doesn't really do well in a civilized world but gets called to a fancy ball. A stark contrast from the bar scene at the opening. Notice the sign that said "not responsible for ball failure" at the pool table? Fun foreshadowing. Mal and Kaylee change out of their regular gear and get all dressed up for the party. Mal trying to find where he belongs for the job, and Kaylee first trying to fit in with the girls but eventually finding her place with the guys talking shop. Back on board, River was literally tearing off labels from the cans, leading to a bit of confusion. So, what happens when we take off our labels? Where do we find ourselves fitting in?

I think this was a really great episode with Kaylee desperate to escape the 'brown clothes' and feel feminine in what she can wear. Mal even though we know he cares for his crew, has no sense of how they really feel sometimes, and you can see how hurt she is when he said 'what are you going to do wearing that you will be like a sheep on hind legs' Zoe give him a disdainful look. Kaylee is of course overawed by the event and looks great in her ball gown. When she gets introduced to the 'Mean Girls' reminds us so much of Cordelia, Harmony and their vacuous airhead friends from Sunnydale High insulting Willow about her clothes. A great insult when he reminds Kaylee's bully I heard it takes only a wink for a schoolboy to get you out of that dress. Atherton is of course infatuated with Inarra, and again we have another Whedon 'English Baddie', Whedon loves and English Baddie. Very funny when talking about Mal going to have to have the sword duel, and Zoe says 'I think he knows what end to hold'. A great scene at the end when Inara turns the tables on Atherton by saying it doesn't work that and no Companion will ever go with him again. Total humiliation for Atherton. A good little story very with some great character interaction and some great comedy as well.

In my mind there’s 4 requirements to meet before calling oneself a “Browncoat”: A) love the show and/or ‘verse ✅ B) laugh, or at least find yourself goofily smiling at 4 or more bits over 2 or more episodes ✅ C) find yourself being overly protective of, or in complete love with, (or both), the character of Kaylee (I think you got the ✅ on that one now) D) find yourself singing along with (or at least humming) the theme song ❓

I don't blame the actress playing Kaylee for not liking strawberries IRL. At stores they are over-grown and under-ripened, sour and almost flavorless. If you can secure Pacific Northwest Varietal strawberries at peak vine ripeness they are packed with flavor and near nirvana. Those might change her mind.

Yeah, all fruit is flavorless and mostly water. But there's nothing really I can do about it because I'm not rich. And I don't want the stress of growing my own food. I have to make do with what's available.

I think Inara's clothing is more noticeable on the Rim just out of contrast with everyone else's clothing. Out on the Rim, only a select few have enough money to wear what she wears. Also, as you've seen in this episode, her outfit is a bit...less fabric...than other rich ladies, it draws attention as well. I mean, she's not dressed scandalously to us, but the other rich women are practically dressed like they're going to a ball during the Civil War, so the difference is striking.

Hi Elie. One of the things that account for a companion's status is the fact that they are often engaged by the rich and powerful. because of this, their reputation for discretion and decorum is well known. This can be a double edged sword. Since they often know where the "bodies are buried" this can translate into great political and social influence. On the other hand, it can also target them, sort of like river in miniature. ( This becomes important in the episode "War Stories") See you for that one!

Those voiceovers by Ron Glass and Nathan Fillion at the beginning of the episodes were part of the series' original airing. Once you've finished watching the series, go back and watch, or at least think about the episodes in the original airing order. Grrr...

As for a Companion, I don't think it is clothing specifically so much as by nature of being a Companion she is of means that most on the outer planets cannot fathom. She probably makes more from some single sessions with clients than some of those outer rim farmers and miners make in a year. So they see a very wealthy, confident, attractive woman walking towards them in a society very much striated by wealth/standing. Of course they would move. And since Companions are one of the highly respected trades in the Firefly Universe, she also gets immediate respect from local authorities like the sheriff.

Comparing Companions to geisha might not be completely accurate as geisha are not prostitutes in any shape or form (in spite of what many believe in the West). Perhaps a better comparison would be the "sacred prostitutes" we see in some cultures throughout history. For instance, the _hetaires_ in ancient Greece who were well-educated and respected servants of the goddess Aphrodite. There's a religious streak to the Companions of Firefly as well and the leader of a Companion House is called "Priestess".

"Shindig": Badger tells Mal about a deal, Inara gets an offer she should refuse, Kaylee gets to "make like a sheep on two legs," Mal comes to Inara's defense, River shades Badger, Mal is "good enough," and livestock are on "Serenity."

Hey, Elie... I like your reaction style, and you're making interesting content. I'd like to subscribe, but right now I'm on the edge of just stopping watching altogether instead, for exactly one reason: That outrageous logo that you keep throwing up in front of the content for what seems like five of every eight seconds it's playing, for the entire video. 😡 It's beyond obnoxious, it's terribly distracting, and it gets in the way of seeing what's going on. I know you've said before that you "have to" do this for copyright purposes. I've watched over fifty different reactors over the last few years, and you are literally the ONLY one who has ever done anything nearly this disruptive... EVER. They all seem to find a way not to get copyright strikes without doing it, so I just don't buy this as something you "have to do". I'm begging you... FIND ANOTHER WAY 🙏. I've seen people reflect the content left-to-right, blur it momentarily from time to time, drop the audio but not the video or vice versa. There are a variety of techniques that all seem to work. Please, spend some more time testing out these alternatives. I simply can't stand to watch any more of your content if you're going to continue to disrespect the audience by blasting such a ridiculous logo at full alpha over the entire content every eight seconds. We all know what channel we're on, and you've got your bug in the corner to "protect" your edit from others using it. If you won't consider dropping it entirely, at least drop the alpha on it to about 20% of what it currently is, so we can at least see what's happening in the scene. I genuinely believe this choice is costing you viewers and subscribers. I know, because I've seen the comments and I'm one of them. Find a way... or don't, and I'll stick with all of the other reactors who manage just fine without doing this, and never bother watching another of your videos. It's that much of a game-breaker for me. I wanted to bail the first time I saw it, but I wanted to give you a chance to see if I at least liked your reaction style, before deciding if I wanted to say something. Now I feel like I have to. Don't do it for me, do it for all of your viewers who deserve a better viewing experience than what you're giving them. As a film student, you should recognize how paramount it is to not drive away your audience with bad editing choices like this. And trust me... this is really, really bad.
