I have a new project idea for you Kaylee, its a book : "The History of Rare Plants Index". Not that you needed more to do, however my ears perk up when you discuss provinence, cultivation, and market history of these plants. I would read that book cover to cover, coffee table it, and use extensively as a reference. Let me know your thoughts.

I think it's a great idea however she couldn't focus that much on the rareness, available, or price since it's changing all the time and it wouldn't be up to date from writing it to publishing it. But if it's more about the history of the plants it would be amazing

I've always wished there was a history of houseplants in general, but focusing on plants on the rare side would be fantastic. I think more folks in the plant community (myself included) would benefit from having a full understanding of the problematic / colonial history of our hobby. Plus, of course, the sheer joy in reading about provenance and origin.

Costa said in a tour with Ashley Anita that they want to flood the market with tai constellation when it is released to prevent people buying at big box prices and reselling at higher prices. They want to be sure they have enough to saturate the market when it is released and it took some time to propagate enough.
@Stormer26203 жыл бұрын
From my understanding Costa scrapped their first round of Thai's due to poor quality of the TC plants they received. They posted in mid 2021 that the release would be spring 2022 I believe. They did some test releases across the US with success. Talking with the growers that were in other parts of Costa, the Thais were still in full production for 2022.

I've been growing some monstera albo variegata since 2019, and I totally agree, and the price rocketed up! What if I told you if I paid a 6 vine, 5ft tall albo with good variegation (not very well treated tho) for 70 euro in France? I made 45 cuttings from it, a third survived, and I sold them for at least £35 and as much as £120. What I hate is people that sell cuttings with no roots for an insane amount of money. If you are shopping for an Albo now, buy one with roots and idealy established even if the leaves are small.. Because your large mature leaf cutting will grow small leaves anyway. Wet sticks are traps, the odds for you do grow them is not high enough

The Picasso Peace Lilies are impossible to find here in the US. I got ripped off SO BAD last year trying to buy them. I spent $400. for two of them and they are pretty much completely green now. I bought them from a seller in Ramona, California but I honestly think the seller ordered them from Indonesia and they were probably chemically treated to appear white. The seller is still selling on eBay.

@@sunnyh7175 eBay refunded all my money so I am shocked the seller was still on eBay last time I looked. First red flag: They asked me to pay outside eBay and just send me a money request through PayPal. I refused. It hit me that if they sent me a money request outside of eBay then I would have no way to prove or disprove that I was buying anything. It took a month from the time I ordered until the time my plants arrived, which is why I think they ordered from Indonesia and re-sold to me. The box I received came from Romona, CA. I just looked on eBay and don’t see this seller today. It took me 90 days to get my money back if I remember correctly. They sent me plants that looked like they had been fished out of a dumpster. Dealing with them and eBay was a nightmare. To be fair, I have ordered dozens of plants online and this is the ONLY time it’s been like this, but it was really bad.

@paulacothren35913 жыл бұрын
@@TamaraMcRill I watched the Aug 6 2021 video again. Mike and Marcos explained that their original summer 2022 Thai Constellation release target date is constantly moving. They want to have enough stock to supply the entire North American market without the reselling and price gouging that goes along with releasing a limited supply. One hurdle/problem is that the large leaves and slow propagation require acres of greenhouse to supply North America. Now, in Nov 2021, they have revealed that they are in fact having propagation difficulties that they were not anticipating. The 2023 target date may be optimistic (my speculation). Also my speculation: they are still evaluating a wholesale pricing structure that ensures they don't take a bath on this endeavor. In other words, they need to bring greenhouse production costs down in a big way. Propagation failures are likely killing them at the present. I am wishing all the best for them.
@TamaraMcRill3 жыл бұрын
@@paulacothren3591 Thanks for watching and letting me know! 💚 I hadn't had a chance. I'm glad they're trying to wait to curb the resale gouging. Did you hear costa released some philodendron squamiferum to some NC Lowes?

Plant Life with Ashley Anita posted a Costa Farms tour a couple of months back. According to Costa Farms, their reasoning for the delay is that the Thai's had an unexpectedly slow growth rate and they wanted to make sure they had enough to serve the entire North American market without running out. They have been massively expanding their greenhouse space to accommodate more space to grow them. They anticipate late 2022 or early 2023 for release.

Plant Life with Ashley Anita interviewed Costa Farms about the Thai Constellations and they told her they are coming-supposedly- this fall/ next spring and they were of course vague about why, but said it’s essentially because they require a lot of space to grow the amount they need for mass-distribution as planned and they wanted them to be strong and healthy enough to survive that kind of roll-out.

Ashley from Plant life with Ashley Anita did a video with costa farms a few months ago. They actually gave her a tour and showed her their Thai constellations. I like a patterned plant (with a pattern that's more or less the same on each leaf) but a lot of variegated plants just look diseased or damaged to me, so it's kind of hilarious to me that people go nuts over a plant that in my opinion looks inferior compared to the solid colored ones. I just found 2 medium sized domino spathiphyllums for $5 each and a tiny monstera sport all at trader joe's in the same trip. The monstera sport isn't super variegated but still very exciting. I was beyond thrilled about the dominios as I've wanted one for a while. When I go to a big box store I like to always give the monsteras a quick once over to check for sport inspired by your sport video.

My large form monstera deliciosa is a cutting from my grandma's plant, which is either decades old or she bought the same kind of plant again since the 70s

I agree with the PPP. They are at garden centres everywhere, at least where I live.
