Asian Boss

Күн бұрын

Early this year there was a series of massive anti-government protests in Kazakhstan that was triggered by a steep rise in oil prices. It was one of the biggest and deadliest protests in the Central Asian nation’s history where more than 12,000 people were arrested and over 200 people were killed. Why did the protests become so violent and what’s the aftermath been like? We wanted to find out and talk to ordinary citizens of Kazakhstan. For the first time ever, we hit the streets of Almaty, Kazakhstan's biggest city, to hear what people have to say.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Kazakh population.
0:00 - Intro
1:23 - Why did the protests happen?
4:20 - How big were the protests?
7:04 - Reaction to President Tokayev’s order to “shoot and kill without any warning”
8:43 - If Kazakhstan is an oil-rich nation, why is there so much poverty?
10:50 - People’s monthly income
13:50 - What can the government do to improve the living conditions of Kazakh citizens?
16:13 - Do you think these kinds of events will happen again?
17:22 - Message to global audience

@Harry Groundwater free from what exactly? Any demand must be specific or else it only mean whoever demand it does not know what he wants. Just like when a kid tell you I want freedom, but what exactly is the freedom he wants? Freedom of doing whatever he wants and continue to demand money from his parents? That is no freedom. I could relate if they want to be freed from corruption, or freed from inequality. And someone from the crowd has to say how it should be achieved. Not just calling for freedom. It is pointless.

I loved hearing the message, "Different countries and languages make us different from each other, but we all want to live better and this is what makes us similar". I feel we often forget that we are bound to disagree with others in our lives but that is okay; we are meant to discuss, compromise, learn, and grow from each other since we all have different backgrounds and experiences in life. This saying reminds that all everyone wants at the end of the day is to live a good life, plain and simple, and we should want that for each other. Really loved this interview! Thank you for taking the time to talk with the people of Central Asia. Looking forward to the next video!

One guy I know once said that we should focus more on looking out for like-mindedness in specific fields rather than trying to strive for the white whale of a goal of finding people like-minded in everything, and just try to give each other more space when it comes to things we don't agree on. And most importantly, always listen to each other because everyone has their own context. I have a conflicted opinion on this guy's position, but I gotta give him that he's right on something: our oversimplified view on someone else's opinion is what makes the latter look like some drivel in the first place, and this is how we enter a downwards spiral of not being willing to talk and compromise with each other.

I live in Kazakhstan and have never been to the US but kazakhs have a culture of open discussion at home and broad family networks. That really builds the emotional well reasoned intelligence that you see in the interviews. Ethnically Kazakhstan has a broad population aside from the kazakhs; it was a Soviet pioneer land ( and a place of gulags) so many people came here from throughout the USSR and I know people with ethnic Russian, Armenian, Ukrainian and Korean blood who are proud to be citizens of Kazakhstan.

I always wanted to see my country on your channel and always wondered why no one notices us, because we have a very large territory on the world map and we are also in Asia. Now I am so glad to see my country. As for the rallies, many people died ahead of all politics. Innocent people are especially sorry. They got bullets for nothing. And this whole situation is still being investigated. When they say corruption in Kazakhstan, it is simply on a different level. You can imagine that a person goes to university and never attends classes, and then after 4 years just gets a diploma. We have corruption just on a completely different level. When you get a job just to submit a resume, as in other countries it will not work, you will definitely need to unfasten the money to the employer. We are a country that produces oil and, for example, I barely have enough for medicines, food, utilities, the Internet, communications, and so on. It is simply unrealistic to save money for something else. And there are segments of the population who live worse than me. So they came out to protest. These protests were taken advantage of by elites, businessmen and politicians who shared power among themselves. Most of all, I feel sorry for just peaceful people who suffered for nothing. And then, allegedly, marauders were tortured in prisons and false confessions were obtained. It seems to me that we still have a lot to fix and develop. There, in an interview, it was said that young people are leaving all the talented minds because there is no future for them in our country. With such a political system, there will never be development. When any small or medium business is in the hands of the same people. Therefore, Kazakhstan needs to change everything from head to toe. Change the entire political system.

When I visited Kazakhstan Nur-Sultan was still known as Astana. The people were friendly and very kind, lol, when they realized that I was not Chinese. For some reason they really do not like China there, but it's understandable if you saw what was going on there. The locals don't get paid enough and the jobs were given to Chinese workers brought in by Chinese companies. The average salary there with a college degree is ridiculously low, it's similar to what people in Vietnam make. If the government was serious about redistributing the wealth they would try and recoup all the money that Nazarbayev's family took OUT of Kazakhstan first.

@tosche774

Which diversity? Its mostly native Kazakhs and Russian decendants. Two ethnicities. Btw, diversity can only be preseverd when ethnicities don´t mix. Otherwise one big mixed culture substitutes all the former input cultures. Therefore, diversity within one territorry is actually not that good. Cultures only survive if they are isolated from one another on the long term.

I’m really glad that Asian Boss have started expanding its horizons. As a citizen of Qazaqstan, I want audience of this channel to get to know better about my country. But remember, Qazaqstan has only one official language - Qazaq language. It would be much more appropriate if an interviewer asked questions in Qazaq language. Let me explain why. It was far more than prominent that the majority of protesters were Qazaq-speaking ethnically Qazaq people. If an interviewer chose to speak to those who speak only Qazaq language, he would have shed more light on the arising problem. Have u noticed that almost none of the interviewees was among the protesters?

@@96LinkinPark08 Generally yes and no. It depends on the region of the country. In South, West parts of country inmost people speak kazakh(excluding Almaty, because it is the one of the largest city). So they follow the kazakh traditions more, but in East and North regions I'm assuming 50/50 or more.(because there is a big part of the russian diaspora than other regions.) And yes it bothers a lot that kazakh language has less value as much as russian. I can say that language problem there is one of the big issues for the kazakh people. I hope you will understand me

As someone who loves geography, this was treat that Asian Boss made it to Kazakhstan. That being said, I really applaud the way people in the east think. In America, people love to hate the government and just be mad without assessing a situation. But the Kazaks were very analytical and they spoke on what they knew and understood while pointing out things the government did right, what they did wrong and any possible solutions if any. All in all, they did great🙏🏾
