One important thing not mentioned about matrices is that when you send your L&R to a matrix, you don’t want to EQ the L&R faders at all anymore. You’ll instead use the matrix you sent the L&R to to shape your EQ. In his example, he had the L&R going to several different matrices for different purposes, so eq’ing the L&R will effect all your matrices and not necessarily in a good way. He mentioned some of that. The other thing is that there are 6 aux outputs that you could route your matrices to. This frees up valuable aux sends on the xlr jacks. In my case, I have matrix 1&2 going out 1/4” aux sends 1&2, subs going out 1/4” aux send 3, front fills going out 1/4’ aux send 4, and audio for video going out 1/4” aux sends 5&6. Now, I have 16 “monitor” outputs or whatever I need to send out with XLR connectors. Many times I don’t use all, but have that in my back pocket for those instances where I need a few stereo monitors for in ears. Those (in ear sends) eat monitor sends quickly.

Each of those matrices require a bus to feed them. Additionally FX remove even more bus sends. How would you be able to utilize up to 16 XLR outs?

Actually, the matrices get their signals from the L&R bus themselves. I don’t lose any aux busses for that. And yes, the FX could be using bus 13-16, but if I use an FX for something like a bus or subgroup, I can insert it then the bus is freed up.

Just a different way to use aux sends, in a funner way. But as Drew said, wish we could send indivual channels over there also instead of overall mix. But still very handy for sends to video rooms, cry rooms and youth group rooms or livestream so at least it is still very useful.

Okay, I really dig on this idea other than my kick drum. I use aux 8 for my sub out channel and have EQ that channel for such. I only want two or three things in the sub mix, bass, maybe bass keys and the kick drum. Your sending all of the mix into Matrix 3 and that is like a DJ set up to me. However I am going to move my sub out over to 14 now for I do like how your doing that. I do need a better send for Video out and livestream so this video was very useful to me. But I have been doing sub out on 8 for years now, need to retrain Andrea. Setting up for Church now. Thank you again Drew. Super David Scott.

Another way I use matrices, especially when doing hybrid events (PA and livestream simultaneously): - create 2 buses (or actually sub groups): 1 (mono) for speech, 1 (stereo) for music - create 2 (stereo) matrices: 1 for PA, 1 for stream/recording - send both buses to both matrices - this way you can easily adjust the volume, for instance: send speech louder to the stream to get the right output volume @Drew and others: A pro tip, when you're in the routing tab, and when you're scrolling through the left column ("analog output"). Did you know that, when you PRESS the button instead of turning, that the "output signal" column will auto-advance simultaneously? This way it's very easy to "batch assign", for instance MixBus 1-16 to Output 1-16.

I'm wondering the same thing too! Why would he have some channels only sent to m/c, and other channels only sent to L+R. This must be the only reason he sends both busses to the subs matrix. Maybe he actually has centre fills driven by the M/C buss with different sources in it. But if he did, I'd have thought he'd have addressed that in his Matrix PA allocation. Plus, I'd have a different mix via a matrix for centre fills rather than _only_ certain channels. Anyway - looking forward to hearing the answer. Also - can't you route the M/C buss straight out an output? If all channels / groups are routed to it, why would you then go via a matrix?

The matrix allows him to apply crossover filters to the outputs that's the reason why he sends both the main LR and the mono bus to matrix 3. So essentially everything goes to the main LR but certain frequencies are only sent to the subs using the crossover filter

Drew - great video to help us with our PA sound. Today it is muddy I think because we have all signal going to the subs and all other speakers. I followed you through the EQ of matrices 1, 2 and 3. The subs are Matrix 3. I am confused on the routing section of your video and please help. You have mtx 2 in the video and selecting Output 6 and then matrix 3. Should that be matrix 3 for the subs using output 6 on the Behringer? Today we use outputs 15 and 16 for the mains. I thought we would use output 14 on the Behringer for the subs. Then you say "for a full size" and select output 14.... Full size what? Basically, please explain the routing needed. Thank you again!!

maybe i'm missing something, but using the matrixes sounds like such a backwards way of doing something like a broadcast mix. instead, just use a standard stereo bus, sending the FOH faders post-fader into the bus, and then pull up the FOH faders into the bus to unity. that will effectively duplicate your FOH mix, following the changes you make for FOH as the FOH faders are being sent into the bus as post fader. with the upside of allowing you to push stuff a little harder or softer into the broadcast bus by pulling those faders beyond or below unity then just send your ambience/room mics into the broadcast bus as pre-fader and crank them into the broadcast bus. that way the ambience/room mics for the FOH mix can stay at negative infinity, but you can pump them into the bus independent of their FOH fader levels seems like a much more straightforward way about doing things so that the mixes stay connected BUT completely separate in output and input, and you don't have to re-route or anything like that, and you have greater control in a more intuitive, standard way of mixing

I own x32 producer, so if I understand correctly I can run outputs 7 and 8 (default main l/r) to my mains, output 6 to my subs then route main l/r to matrix 1 and 2 which will send main signals to the mains while using matrix to "copy" that main l/r signal to send to other rooms in the park? Say an outdoor concert with matrix running to a seperate pa inside the restaurant, main l/r pushing my speakers outside?

So, I hope I explain it correctly... My goal is to create 1 total mix of the band on a bus. On another bus I want only the vocal of the singer. Let say bus 1 and bus 2 The second singer must have bus 1 and his/het vocals of bus 3 in this case. I can send 1 and 2 tot matrix 2 and 2. And I can sen bus 1 en 3, tot matrix 3 and 4? Each bus on a left or right. So 1 on left, 2 on right. Then I sent it to a stereo in-ear device L&R.. Set this device to mono. What I hope to achieve is that when the vocalist need to hear more vocal on the in-ear, he/she just turn the balance on the body pack a bit. So more vocal, less total mix. And I can use the same total mix for the different vocalists. Of course I have to use per persons 2 outs. Am I thinking correctly ? Thanks for all you videos.

Hello Brashler Kindly help me understand why my M32 Midas main LR output has low sensitivity towards vocal signals even when the gain is cranked all way up. The channel shows it's clipping but not much is reaching the LR mains output. So because of this, the backup vocals usually sound too quiet in the live mix. Thank you.

In your Mono Matrix mix (Matrix Channel 4) for the camera feed guy, your sending the Main L/R mix and your sending the Mono/C (Sub) mix to it. If your doing your crossovers in your Matrix section, on Matrix channels 1,2,3, for the main PA & sub mix, how are your crossing over the signal coming into your Mono Matrix? Isn't that like sending those signals full EQ range ( Not Crossed over) to your mono matrix mix? Why not just do the crossovers on the EQ's for the Main L/R and M/C channel on the first level, so when u sum to mono, on Matrix Ch.4, Or Sending to your PA and sub, its Crossed-over going in? That leads me to also ask, I know there are tap points when sending channels to mix buses and buses to matrix's. but does EQ'ing the Main L/R affects what goes into the matrix or does that depend on the tap? Holla back. By the way, I have ths board. I'll trouble shoot as well.

One way, select the CHANNEL you want to send, press "sends on fader", then raise the BUS fader you want the channel to go into. More you raise fader, the more send to that bus. Go easy, the signals being sent to a BUS get summed together. Very easy to overload the bus if sending multiple signals. Another way, select the BUS you want to send into. Hit "sends on fader", now move up the faders for any channel you want to send to that BUS. "Sends on fader" works both ways!! When you first hit sends on fader, don't be surprised if a lot of faders move! You are NOT seeing your mix anymore. You're seeing the sends to the bus'. MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF SENDS ON FADER WHEN DONE!!!! If you forget, you'll think you're mixing FOH and still be sending shit to monitors!! Could be a disaster lol. Been there and done that more than once!! Thought I was turning up a guitar solo in FOH and I was blasting it through the lead singers monitor instead! Yeah, feedback happened. Ears hot, head down, the whole works!! 🤣 Cheers!

How do you send a stereo signal (ie Main Left/Right) to a mono matrix? If you SEND the L/R channel to a single un-linked matrix, does it automatically sum the left and right signals to that single matrix?

Yes! It just takes the Left and the Right and sums it to mono if you don't link the Matrix to another.

Hi Drew, another excellently explained video. I use a Matrix for doing a rough mix to my USB recording stick where I can balance the levels differently to the PA mix. I have a question that is a bit off topic; when I send my drums to a stereo buss on the x32 they show as clipping on that buss, but I have the gains fairly low on the individual drum channels. Am I using the wrong buss settings perhaps ? Thank you -Jason

Hey Jason, no wrong settings lol. Keep your gains up on the channels to get a nice full signal for sure. It's feeding all your processing, so don't skimp lol. The thing about the bus' is that the inputs to them get summed together. A little bit of each drum will bring you up to unity. Throw a pair of headphones into the side of the x32 and hit the solo button on the bus. Set the BUS fader at unity and add small amounts of each drum until you get the lights on the bus to unity with the mix you want. (remember to turn up the "PHONES LEVEL" knob at the top of the board lol.) You don't want each channel to be sending a full signal to the bus. You're not "gaining up" the signal, it's already strong. You're just mixing into the bus. Hope that helps... Cheers

The same rules apply when mixing your bus' into your main outs. start with master at unity and build your bus mix into it. Same concept. If you have proper preamp settings and a good strong signal on each channel, it's amazing how little you need to add from each channel to get bus mixes up to where you want. Adds up quick lol. What is considered a smaller board for channels? Is the X32 compact considered a smaller board or full size to use channels 15 16 or 7 8??

You misunderstood that part of what Drew said. He was referring to the outputs on the boards. For the full size x32 there are 16 physical xlr outputs on the back and 32 physical xlr inputs. The main left/right output signal on the full size board is automatically assigned to outputs 15 and 16. Leaves the first 14 open for whatever you want. On the x32 compact (which I own) there are only 8 physical xlr outputs on the back and 16 physical xlr inputs. The main left/right output signal on the compact is automatically assigned to outputs 7 and 8 because there are only 8. That leaves the first 6 open for whatever you want. The compact can handle 16 mics in, plus six more inputs in the form of the 1/4 inch AUX in's on the back. These 1/4 inch can be used for keyboards or drum machine or acoustic guitars etc... If you get the 32 channel stage box from Midas or Behringer, it has all 32 inputs and all 16 outputs. If you hook that up to the X32 COMPACT, you have full access to all of it. Hope that helps. If he is sending your stream off of a matrix, it would most likely be the same mix that is in the house PA. Which means, he isn't turning you up in the mains. Are you using an amp on stage? If so, I would suggest turning your amp down, so that he pushes you more through the main PA. If you don't have an amp on stage, I would imagine that the subwoofers are set too loud in comparison to the Main PA, which means it sounds good in the room (lots of subs) but the online doesn't get the subwoofer send, so you aren't being pushed there. If this is the case, I think your church/venue would benefit from a proper system tuning. Hope this helps!

I use a Matrix for controlling our PA Sound through my in-ear on stage, but can add my own vocal louder to the mix, also can add the ambience micro to it, with our routing the ambience to the PA Mix. For this I use a Mixbus to Matrix.
