A common request from vocalists is how to have reverb in their floor monitor or IEM mix. Having reverb in their mix can help them feel less isolated when using IEM's and can make their mix more pleasant to listen to.

Hi Drew. Amazing video as always! I had to do this for an IEM mix a few days ago in a show; I had to do it on a rush so I ended up just inserting the verb on the bus for the IEM. Thanks for explaining the most efficient way to do this. Now I know how to do this next time.

Hi Drew, always a delight to see your videos. Indeed very resourceful. Can you make a video on how to use a Dbx driverack 2 (high, mid and low steroe speakers outputs) with the X32. Our current config is LR + Sub but the Dbx only takes a steroe input; How can we get all 3 outputs (including the mono-sub) into the Dbx?

Thanks, I had this set up for myself a few years ago, and I couldn't remember how I did it. The key was the last piece, which was bothering me. Setting the FX Return Send to pre-fader, which makes sense. You have to treat it as a send, as it functions as a virtual input and virtual output. Hard to get a handle on if you're not used to running old school analogue effects. Luckily, I still had the scene saved on my work laptop and it checks out. Prefader on the sends tab.

I work with a band where I send them a separate reverb just for their wedges so any alterations I make can be done freely without affecting their reverb fx. However I'm considering adding outboard fx using the auxiliaries so it frees up the processor but allows me to use other things too.

One problem to watch for with most reverbs is that they are mono in stereo out so you may need more reverb units than you think (this includes the built in effects as far as I can tell). In that case you will end up with singer A's reverb in singer B's monitor and vice versa. I have some Behringer V-Verb units that can run as 2 monos when you use the spdif input and output as one channel and the analoge I/O as the other channel. This also then brings the fact that the AUX I/O is balanced and most Spdiff converters are not. If anyone knows of a balanced I/O cheap mono or independant channel reverb unit please let me know.

Hi Drew. Thank you for producing these videos. They are the most informative I have come across. I am working with an x32 producer and because of this video I now can route effects to a monitor bus. However, I have a question. It applies it to everything going into that bus, drums, guitar, etc. Is there a way to only apply to just the vocal inputs? We are using an IEM as an fyi. Thank you again.
@66fitton
@66fitton Жыл бұрын
If the only thing going INTO the verb is vocals, you should not have verb on the guitars and drums going into the bus. If you're hearing verb on the guitars and drums, you have sent those channels TO the verb. At 1:35 in the video is where he sends the vocals to the verb. He "selects" bus 13, hits "Sends on fader", and raises the vocal mic fader. If ANY other faders get raised, they will go to the VERB. Make sure at this stage that ONLY vocal faders get raised! If by chance you have inserted the verb itself directly onto the bus that feeds the IEM, you will hear verb on everything. Drew did not do that. The verb was on bus 13 and the monitor was bus 1. Vocals got sent to bus 1 to get it to the monitor, and also bus 13 to get it to the verb. Then the Effects Return for the verb also got sent to bus 1 to get the verb to the monitor. Hope somehow this helped!✌

Hey Drew, fantastic video! I'm a fan of your videos on the X32, very easy to follow and very complete too. Quick question, one time I saw an Audio Engineer assigning/converting the inputs on a X32 (lets say 4 for vocals) to create a copy of those in order to send it to their in-ear monitors. So the case is that the vocalists needed some sort of specific eq or reverb in their in-ears and the Audio engineer did not use the method you showed on this video but instead, created a copy of their channel and whatever effect he applied on that copy it would go ONLY to their in-ears. Does it make sense what Ii'm talking about? :) Do you know? Thanks in advance

I have a simple question, I'm interested in reverb for my lead vocalist in his ears. Does this method then tie the FX proportionally to the Vocal Fader? Because the way I set it up, if you were to pull the Vocal Fader all the way day, the wet FX still remain in the monitor. Whereas I think if you were to do the same thing on the Main LR Layer and pull the Vocal all the way down, the FX would then be also pulled all the way down and you wouldn't hear any of it through the PA. That's how I'd like it to be in the Monitor if possible so any adjustments to ears on the fly the FX will follow it. Does this way allow that?

Great tip as always. I got a little confused however on what it is you are changing. You are selecting the fx return fader channel, but altering a property of the monitor channel inside that fx return? What is the purpose of setting it to “pre”? Is that pre-fader? What will happen if you don’t change that? And…if this value is a property of an effects return that affects a monitor send bus, then do you need to change it for any effect return you wish to send to monitors? For example what happens if you also want to send delay (separate fx bus) into the monitors? Repeat the process? It may be useful to know what is happening when you make this change, in addition to just knowing where to change it. Many thanks for your continued videos! 😊
@DrewBrashler
@DrewBrashler Жыл бұрын
Great question! If you kept it on Post Fader like it is default set to, you would be affecting the volume of the reverb being sent to the monitor while you are mixing front of house and adjusting the volume of the reverb up and down. Delay would be the same setup, just a different sound in the monitor!
@HollandTeye
@HollandTeye Жыл бұрын
@@DrewBrashler so if i get you, changing it to pre fader, breaks that link runs from the Fx return to any bus or output routed to? so my questions is, i personally mix fx during gigs with the bus 13 (i.e the original fx sends), meaning i keep the return at a constant level and control the level with the sends so would this still not affect the monitor send even if the fx return is set to pre?

Hello Drew, thanks for your amazing informative videos on X32. I was wondering why you have to press the solo button to hear the reverb. That part wasn't quite clear for me. Is it just to hear it in the main out or it must be pressed to hear it in the monitor ?
@BriggsMullen
@BriggsMullen 8 ай бұрын
I believe he is using the headphone out on the board, which defaults to the main LR out. If you solo a monitor, it will switch the headphone out to listen only to that monitor instead of the main LR. So when solo is on, you are hearing what the monitor would hear, and when it is off, you are hearing what the house would hear. This is just for demonstration purposes to show when/where the reverb is working.

Awesome vid man! I was wondering if you have any suggestions on how to get a great rack Tom/Floor Tom sound. My guys drums are tuned well, but maybe just need suggestions on frequencies/gates and reverbs. Maybe mics. (We use sennheiser e604) Thanks Brotha!
@66fitton
@66fitton Жыл бұрын
Your mics are good enough for sure to get good sound. I learned something a while back that was a game changer for toms. Thing is you need to be able to see your toms on an RTA to really get it right. If you are using an x32 you got it made lol. Pull up the eq screen for your tom channel. leave the eq flat to start. Watch the screen while the drum is being struck. You are looking for the spot in the bottom end that rises the highest when the drum is struck. Go right for the middle of the biggest hump. Raise that frequency at least 6-to 8 dB with a medium Q. Not too narrow, but not really wide either. Yes things will get boomy and muddy at first!! So here's the magic.... whatever the frequency is that you raised, DOUBLE that frequency exactly, grab the next eq and drop that frequency by at least 8-10 dB with a very narrow Q. Then double the second frequency that you dropped 8-10 dB and do it again. So if your floor tom is ringing loudest at 70 htz, BOOST that, then go to 140 htz and DROP it, then go to 240 htz and drop that frequency too. Just double the number every time you add another eq. What's happening is you are removing the overtones at exact octaves from where the fundamental note is ringing. It is a game changer for sure! The only other thing to do is add some highs in to get however much click you want to add. If you can't SEE the tom on an RTA, this is nearly impossible to do lol. If you can see it, it takes 90 seconds. You may find you need a lot less gating and comp because you tightened up the drum itself. If you do use the gates on the x32, remember that they are frequency responsive! You can tell the gate to only listen to certain frequencies!! That way when your snare is cracking loud at 1kHz the gate ignores it because it's only listening to the 100htz range. Louder sounds out of that range the gate ignores no matter how loud they get. Friggen brilliant if you ask me! Sorry for the book lol. Cheers✌

It should be exactly the same as this video, you just have to find the corresponding controls on the app. I use Mixing Station instead of the Behringer app, so I can't speak specifically, but if you poke at it you should be able to find Sends on Fader and all the busses easily enough.

I believe, that if it was left POST, that any change to the ffects fader (as you might mute it or lift or change it's level) will also change the amount of reverb in the monitor. Setting it as PRE lets you change the reverb in the House (MAIN OUT) without effecting the artists monitor. I generally leave it as POST, but my effects returns never change. If i need to pull out the reverb (like when a singer is speaking) i mute it at the efeects send level.

You would need to send the verb on its own channel to the P16, or use a mixbus to mix it before sending to the P16. I often use a mono mixbus as what I call a "Flex Bus" for mixing a stereo channel to a single channel for the P16's. But if a vocalist was also wanting reverb on their vocal with a P16, I would use this flex bus for them. Basically I would only send the Vocal + Verb to that mixbus, and then send that mixbus to the P16. Hope that helps!

@user-ye6uk3ue9r
@user-ye6uk3ue9r Жыл бұрын
Pre stands for pre-fader, and the fader it’s referring to is the main channel fader going to the LR mix. The buss that’s sending signal to the monitor is pre-fader, so that the monitor mix is independent of the LR house mix. If you sent the signal to the FX post-fader, the amount of reverb going into the monitor mix would change depending on the position of the main channel fader, LR main fader, and the mix in the house. Putting the FX pre-fader will feed them parallel to the Monitor buss, which is also pre-fader.

Now that I had a year to get familiar with the X32, I have a related issue. Vocal Channel works, Monitor Channel (in-ear) works. I have effects in both, so good right? but..... 1. If I LOWER the volume on the Vocal Channel, the Monitor Channel EFFECTS disappear but raw volume is still ok there. 2. If I MUTE the Vocal Channel, the Monitor Channel is also muted so my in-ears go dead for that channel. Not good if I'm rehearsing and don't need to blast through the main speakers but would still like to hear myself in the in-ears. I hoped your video instructions would help but here's what happened after setting to "PRE".... Both the Vocal Channel volume and Monitor Channel volume doesn't work anymore, but sound is still coming though purely through the effects in those channels. SO I lose volume control in both.

Great Tutorial actually, but it's a bit of a pity he doesn't explain WHY he actually does it. To my experience, Buses going to Wedges or Stage Monitors are set to pre fader in most situations anyways. So does he simply show how to configure the bus so that any source (Mics, FX) goes pre fader onto it ('them' as they are paired) or am I missing out on something here? Thanks a lot.

Usually I immediately understand what you're saying but in this instance I'm going to have to try it to understand exactly what you did. It didn't appear that you changed any send routing, all you did was change the sends from post-fader to pre-fader? Also, maybe I missed you saying this, but it seems that you didn't really emphasize that this took the reverb effect off the main bus. So it's not like the reverb is being shared both by the monitor and the main. There seems to be some personal preference in whether monitor bus sends should be pre or post fader. I see that you're firmly in the post-fader camp. I need to do some reading on the trade-offs. I would have thought pre would be better so that adjusting the main mix does not affect the monitor mix.

Good day, Drew! I have a question for you regarding the Behringer X32. I am just a sound producer in my church. See. I have a main stream that I broadcast in the hall. I send the sound from MixBus 1-2 to the computer for recording. At the same time I use the layout, which you quite simply explained in your youtube videos. Then I have a parallel translation in English and French. I use MixBus 3-4/5-6 for that respectively. The question is as follows. What do I need to do on my computer to make the sound come from USB so that I can in the video program OBS (for example) and capture sound from MixBus? The scheme is as follows: I use User Out: User Out 1 - MixBus 1 User Out 2 - MixBus 2 User Out 3 - MixBus 3 User Out 4 - MixBus 4 User Out 5 - MixBus 5 User Out 6 - MixBus 6 Is it possible what I'm asking or is there some additional software I need to download? The option to send to AuxOut in my case is not an option, because through the "RCA"-cable there is a small interference - and without them I only consider USB. I will wait very much for feedback! Thank you!

Or are you asking how to record all six bus' instead of just the two? Or are you asking how to get the signal from bus 1 and 2 to record in a separate video program? I will be here if you clarify! Cheers

How do I turn fx off through main left and right ?

I would take a look at your FX returns and see if they are un muted. Additionally, make sure that none of your effects are inserted on the LR bus by looking at your Effects page. Hope this helps!

I enjoy your videos, Drew, as I use an M32. I think you need to do this one again to make it a little simpler to understand

Jesus, That's a lot of fader flipping just to get reverb, and even more steps to get the reverb to the monitor. I feel like i need a PhD to truly master these steps. Please tell me it's easier on other digital mixing consoles.

I think your videos are very informative and I'm kind of new to the X32, but you go so fast, I have a hard time following you. I've just started slowing down the speed of the video to make it easier to follow.

The only answer is NO. Do you really want to die that way? What about the talent, surrounded with so much latency between room acoustics, audience response, and stuff spilled on all the gear? Do you actually dress that way at work?
