Discord notifications not working was probably because he had streamer mode on (which could be seen @ 11:04 in this video. Good to hear the audio scrolling is being worked on / fixed. It's one of those annoyances that's cropped up on computers since always, everywhere (well, Windows and Linux anyway, I've too little Mac experience to have encountered and not used BSD yet). But I've become so used to it, that I instinctively position the cursor off of the horizontal bars to avoid. 😀

7:00 this is actually a Firefox issue, and it happens even on windows. When trying to save a file the way he did (wrong, but expected because of Github's bad UX design) firefox saves as "install.sh" instead of "install.sh.html". Any other browser saves as "install.sh.html". And before people say that "file extensions mean nothing on linux", file extensions serve the purpose of giving the user some context of the files content, hence why they are still used, even on linux.

I'm not very Linux savvy myself and I always use the terminal to install software because it's faster than searching using a GUI when I know which app I want, and because discoverability of apps in all GUI package managers is still horrible that I only ever discover new apps from searching the web in a browser, which leads me right to a command to install via terminal.

Qt control scrolling needs to be force-disabled *everywhere*. It's one of the biggest UX problems of KDE. I wanna scroll my page unless I select a control. Hovering them shouldn't be enough.

It really bothers me that he blames the lack of hardware support on Linux. That's the hardware manufacturers fault. You can't expect the open source community to support every feature of every device especially when a lot of them need to be reverse engineered because no specs are supplied

The problem with it working later is likely due to how updates are applied. People are constantly told on Linux that you don't have to restart to apply updates and that is kind of true and kind of false. You can apply the update but since the files are essentially reference counted the old files are still there so long as they are open. Until you close the program and reopen it the old libraries will still be used. If you update something basic for KDE or X you may as well just restart the system to make sure everything uses it. In some other discussions there can be issues related to the NVidia driver where after some of the stuff is enabled you need to restart before everything else works correctly.

You don't have to restart if you know what you're doing. You do have to restart if you don't. Quite frankly restarting is always easier. Last week when I updated my video driver I opted for doing it the hard way because I wanted to preserve my uptime. It is the price us uptime snobs pay.

@@1pcfred Yes I know you don't have to technically restart your entire system but you do need to restart every program that would have the library open or anything that uses the stuff you had to restart. Getting that right is difficult. I have seen systems compromised because they had the security update installed but one service was still vulnerable because it had not been restarted.

So I am going to have to power down to do that. Doesn't make me happy. I'll do it before I go to bed tonight then I'll run memtest all night to verify it. I feel his pain. Once I tried Gnome on Arch. I tried to get used to it, but I found it cumbersome. So, I installed a bunch of plugins to get the menus and panel the way I like it, disabling the default ones. It worked OK until an Arch update came through with a new version of Gnome that none of my plugins would work with - I had a blank desktop. Then I installed KDE, but then the updates started taking forever - between Gnome and KDE there were a lot of packages. I then decided to uninstall Gnome. I changed my display manager to SDDM, confirmed it was working, then uninstalled Gnome. That crashed my whole system and I couldn't even boot to the terminal or chroot in. I ended up doing a complete reinstall with KDE.

KDE for the win. Now gnome developers decided that after you login the first thing you must see is the overview. Because "nobody wants to log in to an empty desktop", despite the fact many users use extensions so they can launch software without using the overview. Users asked this to be an option and the gnome developers said no. Guess what, there is a new extension on the market now (that will break soon).

My own experience with ”DE hopping“ was pretty similar. Theoretically it should be possible to run various DEs in parallel, but there do tend to be side effects. Rather stick to one, perhaps with a minimal WM as a fallback option in case something gets screwed up too badly. And always, always keep a dedicated /home partition and some off-site backup, especially if you want to play around. KDE is most definitely the best option if you want a basically prefab DE that you can configure to Judgment Day and back again. Mine, right now, looks like GNOME in most respects but behaves better.

I tried the latest GNOME desktop over the summer, and I gave it a solid week before I got frustrated and replaced it with xfce. It's a garage server, so I like that it looks like a weird version of Windows NT server from 1999 lol. I'm thinking about throwing an extra SSD I have laying around into my main box and dual booting Linux again and giving that whole proton thing a shot, though, and I'll probably go with KDE just for compatibility more than anything. I just really don't like how GNOME's default desktop has gone with the "knock off Chinese Android tablet that can't even handle playing 720p KZbin videos without stuttering and getting disconcertingly hot in my hands" aesthetic.

So there are two presenters sharing their experiences on their respective distros. Linus happened to be on Manjaro with KDE. However, the discussion wasn't solely on KDE "space" but rather how Linus experiences Linux through KDE. If you focus on KDE then it really is a boring video. I noticed you skipping parts of the video (probably because of boredom) and this is where you missed some of their struggles. "Teams" meant Microsoft Teams (software) not "Team like group of people working together". Their videos aren't really geared specifically towards developers. However, they wish developers can catch these struggles from certain types of users (users specifically switching to Linux and are lost) and maybe make the software a little easier to use. Great job guessing the applications at the start of the video! I'm also a user who switched from Windows to Linux. I'm just a tad more patient than most Windows users I guess :)

7:00 yes, but Linus isn't a developer From the pov of a developer (or people who know how such stuff works), it's understandable that it works that way. From the pov of a normal user, it's not. Also, Linus brought up another pov: The fact that the file type and the file extension can be completely unrelated can be very confusing to users. Even more so since explorers (like Dolphin) use the extension to decide which icon to use for the file, if the file has an extension (no, really, if you don't believe me try it out). Btw when you try to open the file, it's going to decide which program to use based upon the same rules it used for deciding which icon to show (extension first).

The thing is, he's doing this challenge from the eyes of someone who wants to switch to Linux but has no experience with the open source world and the experience he would get. At present, somebody with a device like a goxlr, a device which is not well supported, requires downloading scripts from Github to even get it working. And since the user has no idea how to use Github, he expects a download button for a single file, not something hidden behind a green "Code" button to get the whole repo as zip file instead. That's the main thing thing he wanted to say. People are always saying he's blaming Linux here but he doesn't care whose fault it is since there is still a high chance a new user will have this problem if they want to switch.

Um no. So like what does he know? is it arbitrary? He does not know a common web browser feature but he is a power user who is running arch? In *nix based system its always file type that decides what application will be used. It's way better for new users because they don't have to care about anything. It doesn't matter if their photos are mp3. They will open correctly.

@@herbertwestiron power user is this weird place where you know some things and don't know others, and the things they know are essentially random Also, about the file extension: 1. No, at least in the GUI, it chooses it based on the file extension if there is one. It will only look at the file content (and as such the file type) if it doesn't have an extension. If you don't believe me? Try it out. Change the extension of a pdf to txt and double click it. I did that before writing the comment. Also, if it would work that way, it would also be a security risk. On thumb drives you normally have file systems without permissions and as such files act like they have set 0777. So if you have the extension of pdf but it's in reality an executable and it would try to run it, instead of opening it like the user would expect from a pdf, have fun. 2. I don't think such a behaviour is more userfriendly. If you open a file with mp3 extension and double click it but instead e.g. a pdf viewer opens (because of a bad attempt of hiding it), most users would be confused. It's only better if you keep consistently not using ANY extension, but some programs are going to do tgat automatically. 3. What do you do with very similar files? E.g. random text files and a html file. Both are technically text files, but I doubt you want to use the same program to open both. 4. It's inefficient. In case you don't know. If you want to figure out the filetype in the terminal, you normally use the "file" utility. file doesn't go and look at a certain marker, it open the file, reads the first few bytes and then tries to guess it based upon that. But as you can maybe guess, doing that in a GUI just for determining the file type so it can use the right icon, is rather inefficient, since will take a lot of IO if you have a substantial amount of files in a directory.

What I meant by my comment was if you are going to use a file extension based app you will be using abstraction because nix based system don't use extensions as default. You are dependent on mime. You have to understand that before jumping on nix systems. This is why nix way is better because it keeps system level secure and we can provide necessary abstractions like extension on application basis. It might be security risk except for the fact that file are not set to 777. Atleast never experienced it. Relying on file extension is literally a big security risk. Change to .exe we have an executable now. Have a good day. You don't provide permissions manually to make it an executable. It just is. An everywhere executable. Random text files and Html files are not same don't make up things to defend yourself. Why do you think html headers exists? Yeah and you are using extension so? I never said extensions shouldn't exist. They are helpful for text editors, programs and sometime humans to check what kind kf file it is. However a system built around file extensions allowing to make something executable by file extension and then hiding them opens up too many security holes. The security risk you are talking about actually applies to extensions based executables not the other way around. What you have to understand that all executables are not same. When you make something executable in Linux and when you run it will automatically pick what it runs on. The same is not true for windows. If you make a python file executable it won't run. You have to change extension to .py then associate py files to be run by python interpretor. Way too long and tedious. P.s. My mp3 example is bad. I agree and apologize.

Mr West, I'm replying to your comment out of convenience, not because I agree or disagree with you. :) On Windows, playing "games" with file extensions is a technique to trick people into running malicious applications. Executable files will have an extension like ".pdf.exe" such that the file will appear with a PDF icon but when you double-click it, it will actually execute and not be opened by the default PDF viewing application. Anyway, I'm on Linux Mint 18.3 running Meno 3.6.5. The "file" command discussion above was interesting, so I ran some tests. If I copied a JPEG file and renamed it to have a ".mp3" file extension, when I double-clicked it, Totem (the default media file player) opened. I was able to open that "mp3" file in GIMP without issue. Then, I copied a HTML file I had to a file with no extension and "file" detected the file as being HTML. I then created a plain text file using "echo" and redirected the text to a file and "file" detected the file as ASCII text. Then, I used "echo" to redirect some HTML I wrote to a plain text file (no file extension) and "file" was able to detect the file as HTML. Looking back at Nemo, it also detected the HTML file and plain text file correctly and even though neither file had an extension, the appropriate application opened.

It is funny to see it is the same experience for almost everyone Switches to Linux. New users always blame Linux for things they have no idea about it, until they find out that was not Linux 😅 I exactly remember when I switched from windows/Mac to Linux and everything was a mess. Nowadays I can’t just use anything but Linux. By the way KDE was always a mess to me as well due to a lot of options and settings and yet again KDE and xfc are my favorite DEs these days. I just really would appreciate a bit modernization of look and feel 😉 cause it looks a bit old but damn stable and full of features. Thank you guys, keep it up.

"open containing folder" and generally open/save dialogs have often (in total number endured through 10+ years I use linux) issues with different DEs and different install methods. As most of these modern closed-source chat apps are electron based, it may be issue of the underlying web browser engine, or I have run into similar issues with some apps expecting XDG portal running which I had not (then firefox was not opening any dialog for me), or just the app code not even trying to use XDG desktop stuff and directly trying to use DE native libs which for some reason does fail in other DE at that particular time. Some frameworks just don't even try to use any native dialog and just reimplement their own using just clib to access FS, which then usually works, but is kinda annoying if you are used to KDE file dialog. The file dialog stuff is considerably brittle from the developer point of view (I mean desktop app developer who is using single OS and DE and some GUI framework and doesn't even have idea some stuff is specific to his setup or that he will lose compatibility by doing some customisation, etc). And then, even if you as developer did everything right in code, various distro could compile/package with some extra compile options to remove some fallback, etc. Unless you have large QA done on your app, you may not even know there is issue on some configurations.

His point wasn't (just) that it downloaded a .html file, but that having it named .sh wasn't enough to trick the system into accepting a file type change. The suffix of a file has a different meaning in Windows than it does on Unix, and Linus couldn't understand why Linux (or really all Unix-systems) doesn't work the same as Windows on that front.

@@ArthurD No, he didn't. He approached it as himself, who's used Linux in the past. Primarily running commands he's told by far more experienced/knowledgable people, but that, as he acknowledges himself, gave him enough knowledge/confidence to be dangerous. Let alone that people are different. Some newbs want their hands held, some want to dive in the deep end alone and figure it out for themselves, others will spend weeks or months reading up in advance to prepare themselves. Linus knew enough to be dangerous, rushed it to get the videos done but doesn't care enough about the content to make it informative by having Anthony (or other Linux YT'er) put a 5-10 addendum on the end of the video pointing out the reality of Linux how to avoid the problems, what problems were PEBCAK and what's just "the Linux way" which they'd quickly get used to after a little experience rather than "OMG it's different to Windows this is stupid".

One thing i did notice about 11:38 into the video. When i create application in the menu, they don't appear in the menu unless i reboot. I can find them using search and them pinning them to my icon taskbar, but is there a way to refresh the window setting so that the application we create will be in the menu system? KDE of cource.

The APT error is because of a java annotation tool. You can also try and run it on Mac with the same error. OBS is generally pretty slow on Linux in my experience, 4k60 capture without dropped frames is pretty much impossible on any DE (RTX 2080ti). Maybe it works better on AMD, but FFMPEG is definitely smoother for local capture.

I compiled OBS and it works good here. But I don't do 4K I just do 1920x1200 which is my full main screen. I have a 750ti which as we all know is the greatest graphics adapter on Earth.

@@EricParker I've heard bad things about compositors. Compositing sounds gimmicky to me. I suppose some of the features could be considered useful. It should also work. If developers can't get it to work I'd say it is on them. The hardware is certainly capable of doing it.

I think it's funny how many people I've read saying, "uhh, well OBS didn't work because they're idiots and they didn't try restarting their computers, and then they restarted them between the times they tried which made it work. Duh." Which is... Ridiculous? I think that even with Linux having that mythical "never needs to be restarted" reputation, I think even relative novices figure out pretty quick that this isn't true outside of Enterprise, data centers, or purpose-built server configs. And I think that it should be noted that Luke and Linus both _have used_ or _do use_ Linux, just not recently as their primary, daily driver OS. Linus runs a Linux NAS at home, I believe that he has some of his production server stack running it, too, and he has used it for other things in other projects, and Luke stated early on that he has daily driven Linux in the past (but not really for gaming.). My point being that I doubt that neither of them considered restarting when they were trying to troubleshoot something important to themselves and for the challenge. It's way more likely that either OBS or something related to it got updated either in the background or just by happenstance as they were troubleshooting and configuring other things. I believe they are both running Nvidia graphics cards, so I think it's likely that they stumbled upon a fix or installed some sort of dependency while trying to get a game running or tweaking their audio set up. I like that you just shrugged and said, "yeah, sometimes stuff just doesn't work and then fixes itself, computers do that shit all the time. Who knows what it was, oh well it works now." Spoken like a true power-user XD

This is not the video where he mentioned KDE Plasma. What you watched was part 2 of the challenge. Part 3 is about "Productivity on Linux" and that's the video where they mentioned KDE having issues. If I recall correctly, the biggest issues were dolphin, and the popups in the corner that are easily missable.

The store should have 1 entry per app maybe 2 if there is a cannary build. Then it should default to snap or apt whatever distro chooses. The store can have a drop down next to install button that lets you switch it before hitting install.

I was one of those who voted to suggest Linus try out Manjaro, but I regret that now. I still love it, but I didn't realize that it would be too much for a new user to learn to accept that just because the distro doesn't support something and the software dev doesn't support something, it doesn't mean that it has to be different to get it to work thanks to the AUR. I know Linus was well aware of the AUR from the beginning, but he didn't lean into it and trust it enough in the instance of his OBS installation.

For downloads of individual files from github could also just right click on the "Raw" button and click on "save link as" i think, still it's not particularly user-friendly, but i wouldn't even say it's Microsoft's fault, you sometimes download and run scripts for Windows too, the difference is that you usually download them from random google drives and stuff like that, so i would say it's more disorganized on Windows, but nobody prevents people from uploading scripts to google drive instead, it would be worse of course, but i mean, it's the choice of the programmers using github for linux scripts and random cloud services or direct download from websites for Windows ones, so not necessarily an issue with Linux imo

If they do, then that gives you a chance to serve a file with the name `install.sh.html` instead of plain `install.sh`. I won't. All new Desktop Environments suck. Window Managers forever! KDE 3.5 wasn't too bad though. It's still being developed now. I've used the fork. Although there's certainly parts of it that I simply do not understand. Like how they hacked the Qt library to avoid name collisions and how you can link against it now. I get what they did. I just don't get how you can compile old code with it.

@@francescopremsolidoro3858 that is a good question. My guess is that every project peaks and after that there's nowhere to go but down. Most Linux Desktop Environments passed their peak long ago now too. KDE peaked version 3.X and Gnome 2.X Since then they've both just progressively gotten worse.

If i May. This is what i see. I feel that everybody likes to complain about everything, without understanding completely how to do things. I guess that's the windows thing (you know, click this, click that, pray a little, press this, and close eyes while you reboot, and breath in if all works well!!) Yes, there are a lot of things to know with Linux. So what, learn them! Get over it! I know 1000%, Linux is much better than windows. Look at beta vs VHS. That font is the ultimate proof, that Linus is not honest in his videos, but simply troling the linux community and fooling his viewers. It's the lengendary *COMIC SANS* that was developed in 1994 by *Microsoft* for Windows 95! Every professional designer hates that font. No way a linux distro would use that as standard. On most distros you have to install it manually... When he pulls off something like this I don't buy it, that Linus should be too stupid to use git or to know that different distros might come with different package managers. He's only playing stupid to for the views and invents problems that wouldn't occur if you spend 5 minutes to actually do some little research. No, this videos of him are not honest.
