Believe it or not Linux is now approachable by users who need a computer for browsing, email, light document creation, photos, to do lists and music. A linux desktop can do that in spades, do it cheaply and is super easy to maintain and upgrade now. Modern distros are easy to install and maintain - this is one of the largest user demographics for desktops. The growth in Linux in response to craptacular Windows movements (privacy grape) and the expense of MacOS systems - makes Linux and easy go to.

Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.04 man that's likely related to the issues with Mint 21.x users upgrading to Mint 22 that's based on 24.04. I almost broke my Mint 21.3 install when it tried to remove python3 and Cinnamon DE metapackage during the upgrade process among many other packages. There were also a lot of packages that were not available between repos of the releases (i.e. qt libraries). I had to manually revert the changes made during the failed upgrade and fix repo sources back to 22.04 (jammy) and reinstall all packages that got removed. If I had rebooted after the failed upgrade I would have had no grub and a broked kernel, good thing I was able to revert all changes before rebooting and the mintupgrade log was useful in doing so. I'll probably wait a few months more before trying to upgrade to Mint 22 again, unless I feel like wiping my system and instead starting from LMDE instead of regular Mint which should reduce the amount of repos I have to add to get the packages I need.
@thefanboy3285Ай бұрын
Interesting and useful knowledge. Thanks for the share. I was hesitating on whether I should upgrade or not my LM21.3 to LM22. Now i know i'll have to wait a little more.
@abunk8691Ай бұрын
@@thefanboy3285 Your welcome. I may attempt the upgrade again once Ubuntu 24.04.1 is available to give both Ubuntu and Mint devs time to fix things. Some issues like the Qt related one I mentioned is said to be caused by an upstream change made by Debian and later adopted by Ubuntu which affected those based on it like Mint. I was reading Linux Mint forum posts from around the end of August 2024, after my upgrade to Mint 22 failed and saw other posts similar to the situation I encoutnered with varying outcomes. I lucked out that I understood a good chunk of the APT commands that were involved in the attempted upgrade process and knew how to revert them, but not everyone I read was able to. A few of them had a Timeshift backup that they could just restore, but I didn't as I lack a spare drive for that. Worst case scenario would need a fresh install of Mint and in that case just going straight to Mint 22 (or alternatively LMDE 6) is more sensible.
@Linux_ASMRАй бұрын
I tried Mint 22 and while it worked fine for the most part, I had some nasty graphical bugs which I didn't have in 21.3. I guess following the "if it ain't broken, don't try to fix it" is a nice mantra to live by, I'll just stay on 21.3 for a while 😁
@BareegoАй бұрын
Yeah it borked my python3, also had issues with nvidia drivers after I upgraded from Mint 21.3. Ended up backing up my data and installing 22 over it. I've tried out LMDE running on XFCE, it wasn't too bad, the only major difference I saw was not having the driver manager. Otherwise looked just like my XFCE Mint. If/when I ever get a newer computer I'll make sure to get an AMD card, so much less hassle on linux.
@abunk8691Ай бұрын
An addendum (again as my first attempt got eaten by the macerator called KZbin). I've read on some issues with the Mint 22 upgrade caused by stuff Ubuntu 24.04 changed and some were caused by Debian dependency package changes (i.e. Qt stuff). For those sticking with Mint 21.x for now it should be fine since support for that is until April 2027 iirc. I'll likely be waiting for Ubuntu 24.04.1 for more time for the Ubuntu caused issues to be fixed on Mint 22. Alternatively there's the option of switching to LMDE 6 (Debian 12 based) which is mostly similar to regular Mint with an obvious difference of no Driver Manager app, but Nvidia driver can still be installed using APT on a terminal.

ARM windows itself fucking sucks already, so when you combine it with a laptop built with an off the shelf mobile chip your gonna get what's essentially a crappy laptop that makes you wish you just bought an apple silicon laptop. the surface is around the same price as a macbook now, christ it looks like a sad knock-off now. i think most people who want an ARM laptop, a laptop focused on productivity and efficiency, already don't care about gaming so they're just gonna go with the apple alternative instead.

Linux has been slowly increasing and it is at around 1.64% today which is 0.24 points higher than last year (1.2%) at the same month. That makes Linux the only desktop os that gained market share in the last year as all others have declined.

Regarding Linux market share: In November 2023 there is a larger dip in OSX devices which seem to have spread between Windows and Linux/Unknown First I thought that Linux might gain market share from Windows 10 users who do not want to upgrade to 11, but maybe is a good amount of people who come from the Apple universe. It would be very interesting to see what drove them to this change.

Of course companies rather support Windows than Linux. If you don't understand that just think how you as a company would be able finance your software development over long term: With a company that has tons of cash and can pay for development because they will get the money back with their products or a foundation that does not make money with their products and is more or less designed to give it away for free.

As a primary linux user, part of me thinks ARM will be the future and to the normal user that's not tech savvy, and ARM based Windows laptop is just a normal computer which is why I think devs will invest in anti-cheat for those systems so I think people will buy anyways

My take @ "Linux Desktop market" The west is going thru a long spell of self-harm. German productivity has nose dived, outsourcing drools and ... hardtimes are back again. I think that is why more people are dabbling in linux desktops. It is reason I was attracted to Linux and now I love my Linux distro and a big thumbs up to MX Linux. It is a sorta stable kind of distro if you find Mint kinda tooo "stable" if you know what I mean. My guess is that linux market share will continue to increase until good times return - if they ever do that is. If good times do return I'd expect Linux user base to stabilize from expo growth to linear growth models.

Ah, teaching: be very, very careful of your students. They can pose massive risks to you for many years after your class time. Microsoft is actually doing hard work of pushing thier users away from windows towards linux by integrating into windows stuff no one needs and actually no one wants. Great job so far! A friend of mine who is working as software delevoper here in Germany told me that some clients of his company (middle size it businesses) switched completely to linux, also in his company delveloers are allowed only to use linux.

The average user is where all the niche cases get support. More normal people on Linux is good. Gamers are a hard place to start when it comes to support and traction. If people start using it in school and work the game companies will follow.

Steam survey is not based on use of the steam app, is based on the Hardware survey response. Some times the number of Linux users just drops or doubled based on the month, is not too reliable.

On the Kubuntu front, my laptop's upgrade was a nightmare. I finally had to install using all UEFI settings. And, every so often, I have to enter systemctl restart sddm as the background refuses to come up. The laptop is a Dell 7490. Ironically, the 22.04 LTS Dell T7500 and my wife's Dell T5610 upgraded fairly easily. (Using the GUI upgrader) My own tower, T7910, will either get upgraded or I will replace the drives with a 10TB one and install from scratch. After, I copy the folders over to a SSD drive.

I will grant you the fact that Co-pilot+ PCs will not overcome Linux in market share this year or maybe even next year, but the difference is the uptake of the ARM Windows PCs will likely much more rapid than Linux. Epic is future proofing themselves as they expect ARM for Windows to quickly overtake Linux in market share. Time will tell if this bet pays off, especially with climbing Linux market share in general

Also about the gaming section. You should keep in mind that the current trend for modern anticheats is to be run at kernel level because selling users data is more profi- ahem, sorry. Because it helps them prevent cheaters for ruining the experience for everyone as proved by R6, Valorant and other cheater ridden games up to this point. I bet Windows is more keen to allow other people to install this than Linux users and devs, so that's the real reason for me, they are just scared of what they really do at kernel level being made public for the general userbase of their products.
@potaotismus7586Ай бұрын
I switched to Linux, but sadly getting Linux to work flawlessly consumes a lot of time. I'm now on vacation and I don't know if I'll stick to it. I spent about three hours today figuring out why my brother scanner wasn't functioning on openSUSE and I found out that some libs were missing. I hope that Linux developers focus more on functionality and make it easier for casual users to diagnose. Linux now feels like windows 98 when you have the CD of the drivers and drivers won't function.
@hrfdude4234Ай бұрын
13:30 it's not bs, because 4 percent is not enough for a "non paying platform" for them to be bothered! but Microsoft paying them is another thing entirely! if the marketshare for linux was 20 30 percent for example (which may never happen) it would be reasonable to think that the possibility of something like epic coming to linux would be much higher than if it was 4 (not a 100 percent though)!
@corban5364Ай бұрын
It's BS. You can't convince me that the reason is not because they use invasive anticheats full of telemetry with kernel level privileges to "protect gamers" and not because of market share itself. Linux has always been more protective of the users privacy than windows, and current year anticheats are not so different to the new recall feature, they are scared of what the anticheat truly does in the background being exposed to the general public.

No wonder people who took the dangerous choice and tried Linux are staying with it. Unless you really need some special software like Adobe suite, you're better off with Linux (when compared to Windows). And really, please take a note: a Modern Linux _DOES NOT_ need the command line to anything, unless you really want to use it.
@lloydbond13Ай бұрын
I disagree, Steam Linux is not stuck at ~2%. It's going to be a while before people get their random survey after switching. If you look over Steam Tracker on GOL, we always see resistance then a boom. Sometimes there is regression but eventually the highs become the new resistance points and the old resistance points become the new lows. Like now, Steam Linux hit a low, which once was the resistance point only 3 months prior. Also, PC gaming is growing, a lot. So just maintaining the resistance point means more Steam Linux gamers. Unless there becomes a reason to abandon Steam Linux, the network effect will continue to work it's magic and we will continue to see year over year growth. The Steam Linux ecosystem is maturing faster and faster. It's sort of ridiculous how good things have become. Eventually Valve will be doing more polishing and less heavy lifting. So, unless something major happens that make gaming on Linux with Steam pointless, adoption of Linux for gaming is only a matter of time.
