You forgot to mention that your image reflects the people that listen to your music. Example, you can’t be singing about God but look like you work at the strip club. Another example are Country singers. They dress like everyday people. They sing about everyday people. Most of the listeners, look exactly like everyday people.

Nahhh you can totally sing about God looking like you work in a strip club. God is something personal to everyone. The association that women's bodies being exposed is "wrong" or "provocative" somehow means they are less religious is a socially constructed narrative that oppresses women.
@RonBruce
@RonBruce 3 жыл бұрын
@@ashavari of course you can. You’re absolutely right. But in order to be successful in the business you somewhat have to work within the social constructs. When it comes to marketing it’s never about you. On the other hand, If there was a wide audience who wanted to see women/men in less clothing sing gospel. Then it’s appropriate. But there isn’t, hence you may not get as much support as modestly dressed Shalavia over there thats actually giving the people what they want to hear and see.

I really do believe image is important but a lot of us don't have the money to fund exactly what we want our brand to be.. I'm focused on doing what I can do, not stressing everything too much. As an independent artist my focus is consistency, great/quality music and content. Sometimes what we already have an image and don't even realize it. Don't overthink it artists, be authentic!

I used to think the same thing until I realized that image is about capturing the essence of your sound and what audience you are trying to appeal to. Have you ever read the book "Pinball" by Jerzy Kosinski? It's a fiction novel about a washed up composer who's hired by a rich woman with exotic sexual appetites to find a rock star. But the catch is that while this rock star is the biggest hit-maker in the world, nobody knows who he is. He makes his music anonymously, his record company doesn't know who he really is, he's never performed in public, and no known photos of him exist. It's his anonymity and invisibility that generate his image and mystique. I wonder how plausible or possible this is in today's world? Granted, it's in all probability impossible. But it's an intriguing idea.

I like to take inspiration from alot of artists in alot of different genres. So im inspired by people in hip hop and im also inspired by the people in EDM and techno etc.. and i try to twist it in a way thats organic nd creative in my eyes But my brand is a bit like MF DOOM where the music is all that matters and i would have a level of mystique to it by wearing a mask aswell as covering my skin to create anonymity. i would tell about my comical satirical villainous schemes in my music aswell as other topics i think would be cool to address. I have other alter egos that also wear masks that reside in my world and go toe to toe with me so for me its creating qn experience and a world and a storyline for my consumers.

I dont really think we should limit ourselves to making our image reflect our music for a few reasons 1) there are a lot of harmful stereotypes associated with certain images and dress. Especially for women and LGBT. It's sexist and oppressive. 2) to the above point, revolution gets noticed. We can make a statement to breakdown and change current associations and narratives. It might be tough but you can really stand out and create impact with that. This is a powerful tool for artists. 3) as time goes on, our sound changes a lot...but our image doesn't have to. We can have the freedom to explore different sounds and vibes in our music...but still tell our brand's story. If we constantly conform our image to each song or album, there is no brand consistency, which does more harm than good. The point of a brand is to be recognizable, even if many flavors are offered by it ;) But yeah great video! I enjoyed it :)

Drake has had a different image for himself for each album he's released, all the way down to the haircut. 🙇🏾‍♂️
@ashavari
@ashavari 2 жыл бұрын
@@flowgodwan4140 yeah but he still stays within his current branding as Certified Lover Boy. He's always had that kinda sadboi/fuckboi vibe and that didn't change even though the aesthetic changed to match the quirkiness of the imagery. You can do whatever tf you want as an artist when it comes to branding ! :)
@flowgodwan4140
@flowgodwan4140 2 жыл бұрын
Either way you look at it each project, the image changed to reflect the music regardless of the aesthetic being similar cuz it's all coming from the same person. Drake is a perfect example of how changing your image to reflect your music should be, simply pointing out that just because the image changed doesn't mean the aesthetic has to, nor does it mean there's no brand consistency, he's very consistent. 🤷🏾‍♂️
@ashavari
@ashavari 2 жыл бұрын
@@flowgodwan4140 but you don't have to do that. Even drake focuses on the message and his branding more than simply reflecting the music. Yes ofc you should update your visuals for each release but you have to stay true to what message you want to send the world. You don't wanna conform to stereotypes and do what everyone else is doing. You have to stand out. You can maintain a consistent brand and hone in a message without completely conforming to visuals typically associated with a certain style of music. That's my whole point ! Fwiw a bunch of pregnant women emojis does not reflect the music/genre/style of music LOL but it does hone in the message he's sending about his (consistent) brand, while also shocking the world and being super out there Also fwiw, no one is saying anyone should use the same image or style for each cover art or MV btw. Just wanted to clear that up. And in addition to that, just because the same person is doing something- that doesn't guarantee brand consistency. It's actually hard to keep it consistent. These are planned out carefully with marketing. The same person can have many different brands and or a very inconsistent ones. It's pretty common but it rarely does well.

I hope someone sees this and is able to answer. How do you feel about artists who are too present and too available? Example is Imagine if Drake was still doing his music. Then he decides to have a podcast. Then he decides to host an MTV show called Wild N Out. All this while he's making short-film skits or even short action-horror skits for KZbin. How do you manage a brand like that? Because your Instagram page will have too much going on. Podcasts, Skits, short films, music and a Hip Hop Comedy show. How do you handle that?
@Hesoperfect

I feel like this was me not too long ago trying to live all my dreams at once, not saying it's not possible or not a great idea but at some point, it becomes soo overwhelming trying to wear all these different hats. Best advice to other artists like this is to try to find a way to boil it all down to one (For example, I want to make movies & music and I try to do that plus everything in between all by myself, so what I did is combined it all into one, If I make a song and ik that song needs visuals I can shoot it in a movie form and make it as visually pleasing as I want without trying to do everything separately such as making a movie and making music at the same time.) Hopefully, this makes sense and helps!! Ps. It's like instead of trying to wear different hats, make it a whole outfit. Make it all work together !!!

Thank you for brining up the dichotomy and double standard for women artists in the industry. I just started a label, and I am releasing my first single in July. With all the pressures of promoting my music on the internet, I have became really present to that double standard. It is way harder for women in the music industry, because in order to stand out, we have to think about looking good all the time, hair makeup, sex appeal... etc. it's like wowwwww. there's so much there, and I feel like facing all of that has stopped me from having the true confidence to promote my "image"... how I ended up on your video. lol. The problem I have is selling an image is like getting type casted as an actor! People expect you to be that image everyday all day, kids start to believe more in the image of the artist instead of getting the message from the music! Music is suppose to be a form of communication and when it becomes more about the image, the artist becomes stressed and depressed because we are not an image we are human! But I understand it’s branding and business, you have to think about yourself as a business!
