In 1177 B.C., marauding groups known only as the "Sea Peoples" invaded Egypt. The pharaoh's army and navy managed to defeat them, but the victory so weakened Egypt that it soon slid into decline, as did most of the surrounding civilizations. After centuries of brilliance, the civilized world of the Bronze Age came to an abrupt and cataclysmic end. Kingdoms fell like dominoes over the course of just a few decades. No more Minoans or Mycenaeans. No more Trojans, Hittites, or Babylonians. The thriving economy and cultures of the late second millennium B.C., which had stretched from Greece to Egypt and Mesopotamia, suddenly ceased to exist, along with writing systems, technology, and monumental architecture. But the Sea Peoples alone could not have caused such widespread breakdown. How did it happen?
Eric H. Cline is an author, historian, archaeologist, and professor of ancient history and archaeology at The George Washington University (GWU) in Washington, DC, where he is Professor of Classics and Anthropology and the former Chair of the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, as well as Director of the GWU Capitol Archaeological Institute. He is also the advisor for the undergraduate archaeology majors, for which he was awarded the GWU Award for "Excellence in Undergraduate Departmental Advising" (2006). Cline is co-editor of the Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research along with Christopher Rollston.

I'm trying to get caught up with the excellent videos of your KZbin channel. I'm happy to see you interviewed Dr. Eric Cline. I read his book on the Bronze Age collapse and viewed his video course introducing the study of archeology to get a basic understanding of how archeology is done. Your channel covers one of my very favorite periods of history. These interviews and talks really help to keep me up to date.

Very interesting, thanks, your channel is very interesting. It's funny how bronze age civilizations, the sea people and the collapse are entirely more interesting than any biblical discussion about David and Solomon, or the historicity of Exodus.

Exodus is OPEN to debate. There are no archeological evidence, no external written sources but the Old Testament. Yet. Who knows what future will reveal. Exodus of 3,5 million persons, in Sinai peninsula, for 40 years seems a very remote possibility!!!

@35:11 "...an interview with Israel Finkelstein ... (he) was confident that in hundred years all would understand that he was right and all his opponents like Professor Mazar were wrong..." 🤣🤣🤣 That sounds like what he would think Don't get me wrong, I like his work, his theses, and that he's never in danger of underestimating himself.

It is interesting that the Hittites and the Egyptians had an equal number of connections, followed by the Mycenaeans. As we know, Egypt survived. Why did the Hittites collapse and what were the effects of the unravelling of its connections? And Mycenae?

Fascinating to see how political archeology and anthropology have become in Israel. It will be even more interesting in the near future.... as DNA evidence really mixes the brew.

Israel Finkelstein's theory of climate change is not even entertained here as a stressor for the bronze age collapse whereas a perfect storm of stressors spanning vast areas is apparently more plausible. So much for "debates and arguments are good for the field [of archaeology]".

With so much uncertainty that this Cline prof is ready to spell out in the discussion, that one has to be suspicious, of how did he date so precisely the date of a disaster! I do not buy this soup of bad assumptions. It could be totally misdated.

Our common era and how we count years today wasn't known either. That's a problem with all timescales of the form "Before...", because later events shouldn't influence earlier events. . . . Maybe you can just read for yourself BC as Before Common Era and accept that BC is shorter than BCE and shorter is better?

This is my theory the sea people's did a deal with a religious sect who were indentured to Egyptian pharaohs , the deal was the sea people's would give them safe passage for gold, the sect had no gold but their masters did. The group get separated those with the gold went with the sea people's and the poorer members got lost in the desert for 40yrs, to afraid to turn back.

@@KEDEMChannel You're welcome! I was intrigued by the mention of your interview with Israel Finkelstein - I guess it is this 2019 Hebrew interview series starting with "A journey to ancient Israel with a legend of the world of archeology Professor Israel Finkelstein " (1min 50s video length) ? I wonder if it is possible for you to change some settings on those videos - turn on CC (closed captions)/ subtitles - so that Google can perform automatic Hebrew speech recognition and we get the option of English translation? Also I hope you will be able to interview Professor Finkelstein again and ask him about Yonatan Adler' new book
