I think having a spare set of sheets is useful because a lot of the time the laundry machines are all being used since there arent many in a dorm building (at least at uconn). I also used my printer a lot. Some classes require you to print certain assignments. If you didnt have a printer you'd have to pay to print in the library. My roommates and I would just split the cost of the ink.

I brought a toaster to school! it was the best decision and I used it every day. They're not allowed in dorm rooms so if we had room checks or knew our RA was coming we would just hide it in a drawer or closet. I would bring a toaster! really convenient if you want to make sandwiches if you don't have time to go to the dining hall or for having toast or a bagel in the morning before class!!

This is so helpful! I just feel like adding in this: I recommend doing research on what type of school you're going to (does it have a large campus? are classes far apart?) before you decide to bring a bike or not. For example, at UC Davis, it is really helpful to have a bike.
@rachelwahlers6214 жыл бұрын
Honestly I disagree with many things like cooking supplies, extra sheets, tupperware, printer (I’m an early childhood/childhood ed major we need to print), the electric kettle (especially when you are sick for tea), I also used my office supplies all the time and were extremely handy for so many projects

@@molk7447 A clothing rack isn’t a bad idea, even with the dryers since they tend to take about double the time of most washers. Some items also will not dry fully in one load through the dryer. Some schools also charge for both the washer and dryer so if yours does, it could be a great way to save money (mine did not charge us for laundry)

I ended up using a lot of things I didn't think I'd use, I bought more last semester (started spring 2019) and I'm actually really happy. Being an Illustration major with a Psych and Complexity Science minor, dear god I wish I had a printer, too many 1 am runs across campus to the library when it closes at 1:15, total nightmare. My roommate/best friend died too many times. All my friends who were at different colleges for Fall 2018 told me I also needed so much storage, but my dorms are a bit bigger than average even for freshman because my campus spans across 3 towns, so we had the space. I wound up ordering those reusable ziplock bags. They take up less space than tupperware, and I would keep one in my backpack so that I could take baked goods from the dining hall. I did that pretty frequently as desserts were what the dining hall did best and it was nice to have a snack later when studying.

In college it really is up to you to make your own friends because even if you have a roommate doesn’t make that person an automatic friend. I had a friend where here and her roommate was just cordial but they had complete separate lives from each other and the only thing they did together was share a room. So especially if you’re going random, be prepared to not be the best of friends with your roommate. And honestly, the best part of college is going out and meeting new people so take advantage of it

I cook a fair bit on campus but I'm in a campus apartment so it's easier because we get an oven, microwave and a full fridge in our kitchen (plus a little pantry) provided. My school doesn't have buffet style dining halls. They're more like the dining area at a hospital where you get the food from the various stations and go through a checkout line where each item gets added to the bill individually. There are actually named businesses that have stations (like pizza hut, Denny's, Tim Horton's, etc.) so you're paying their prices. The school does have their own stations but they charge pretty high too (think $6 salad, $3 thing of fruit and not of the size where that's reasonable). We do have swipes on our meal plan but each swipe is only worth $7, you can pay the difference with another swipe (but it's still $7 so unless your total is close to $14 you don't want to do that) or with cash, credit, or "dining dollars". I personally average about $9 for a meal in the dining halls (unless you get meal deal items where they lower the price to be just a swipe, but that isn't the good food). And the food is still not that great. Like it wouldn't be worth that in real life. I cook for as many meals as I can. I also use my Netflix a fair bit, but then again I have the family plan and my parents have profiles on it (I'm the one paying, my mom wanted me to do that and I was young and said yes...) And I set up a profile for my friends so we can watch stuff together which is probably the profile that gets used the most.

The bike thing depends on the campus really. There were a TON of bikes on my campus, including mine, and I saw people riding their bikes all the time. It’s great if you don’t have a car on campus, plus if you’re running late for class you can cut the walk to class in half by biking there

Love the energy and I know this is from her personal experience but from my personal experience most of this advice is so wrong. Just remember every campus/dorm is different. The best advice is to buy essentials for living (one set of dish wear, toiletries, sheets, etc.) then buy once you see the need for something. Plus, people are really good about sharing in time of need.

So weird that ya'll have to bring your own microwave and fridge. My brother had to do that 30 years ago, but the school provided us a microfridge in our dorms in the 90s. I thought more dorms were moving to the kitchenette/suite format. I know every school is different though. I have started watching these college videos because my niece is about to start college and started her own channel. Following her led to my finding all the other college vlogs. So many things I see people packing for college I think they need to wait on because once they get to a room, they will find out what specifics will work. As well, there are things you can share between roommates, suitemates, or hallmates - like the vacuum. If you are not too far from home, you can get things from home during fall break or over Christmas break if you realize there are things you wish you had.

It definitely is possible! I did it a lot because I took a ton of 50 minute classes with and hour+ break in between. You could always ask your roommate to switch it for you too if they aren’t busy, and if you’re comfortable with that. My roommate did that a lot for me :)
