Because children use to not have a relationship with their fathers. Talk to any 80+ about how families used to work. Other than disciplining or rewarding the kid (with gifts). The father didn't spend any time with the kid. Because society taught men that they didn't have the ability take care of a kid(society went as far as telling men, they would hurt the kid if they spent any real time with the kid). So until the kids was 15+ the father really didn't get to know the kid. However, when society change and started to tell men that they needed to actually help. They needed to spend time with and be with their small children. A large percentage of men decided to be fun dad. Because once they got close to the kid. Instead of being a distent authoritarian. Found it much harder to be hard hearted. So it switch to mom having to be the hard hearted one.

@Anthony Taylor ok the term rated is actually a precious monetary commodity. Imdb rated 7.8. Out if ten it was better than that, also Dinero and Palmintery were the only actors with sag cards that is amazing for its time most studios would never touch it because of insurance. Howard's end won screen play another rated subject. Lastly ten million dollars made seventeen million if it got its proper credit it would have generated more than seven million dollars profit. Movies need the high "ratings".
