Keep away the clunks!! -- Lubing Driveshafts on a 3rd Gen 4Runner

One of the things that is often overlooked when performing routine maintenance on a 3rd Gen 4Runner is to lubricate the driveshafts. Doing this regularly will help prevent the dreaded clunk when coming to a full stop on the road and making you wonder if you've got another issue going on. Most importantly, you should make sure you're lubricating the slip joints properly. So, in this video we go over how to get this done in detail. Hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!!

Very informative! 36,000 on my 2018 grampas lilprissypoo 2.7l. Toyotaco! I Drive fields and to coast monthly. Still pristine. Greasing and lubing my self after stealership neglect. 85.00 every 5 months for oil, filter and glance. Down to 14 mpg! Sheesh bowwinkle. Never changed air filter after rodents. Gahaa! Soot in exhaust pipe with their 0w20! I took charge. Lucas gas clean, intake clean, filter change. 5w30 full syn. PuroBOSS oil filter. Slowly going up to 17.5 mpg and now a running gear/ trans lube refresh! Hoping for 19 mpg again! At 67 yrs, I thot I could retire, but those kidderz are green pea and not maint minded! I mite grunt and moan, but my 32,000 investment will give me a lifetime of safe and sane transportation!!!!!!!

The short extension won't loose much torque. Less than a lb. For sure. I would be more worried about the accuracy of the torque wrench. Giving it a extra partial turn is just nuts, hehe.

Regarding greasing the slip joints installed in the truck, as you pump in new grease it pushes out the old past the slip joint seal. Per toyota tsb for 4th gen driveshaft "clunk" you pump in until excess comes out the slip joint. Also I trust Toyota specs different greases for good reason. I do appreciate the work you put into your video and with regular service they should last forever regardless. Thanks!

Thanks for checking out the video. The only thing I'd add to that is if these are not greased regularly, that grease can harden up and hence the clunking noise of it sticking in the slip joint. If this is happening, simply pumping in more grease doesn't necessarily push out the problem grease, which is why I would recommend tearing it down like I did in this video.

No amount of grease could fix my annoying clunks ended up getting a new tom woods rear driveshaft and truck drives like a brand new truck. Pretty sure all u joints are toast at almost 200k miles lol

nice video well thought out. i plan to grease my 98 limited 4x4 this weekend, but im not planning to remove everything. What would u recommend regarding the slip joints, when not removing for a deep clean? the youtube crowd usually says to be careful and give it one to two pumps... Your video explained the over greasing issue really well.

You could easily remove just the rear portion of the slip joints that connects to the pinion on the 3rd member. The issue is that the pressure relief hole is there by the yoke, so the grease never gets up onto the splines inside the slip joint when using just the zerk to grease it. Removing that piece, but not necessarily the whole drive shaft, would get you access as well so you could get fresh grease on those splines. Thanks for checking it the video 👍
