We built out our 6x10 cargo trailer conversion over 3 years ago, but didn't include an air conditioner on our first trip out west. It really wasn't necessary as we visited Colorado, Utah and several other states from February to May that year, and there was still plenty of snow on the ground. This past year we traveled from May to September in many of the same areas, so we needed a way to keep cool in certain areas where the temperatures were a little uncomfortable.
We settled on a HiSense 5000 BTU single hose portable air conditioner and it has worked out well for us. It stays strapped to the wall with a bungee while we're driving and we easily added a small hole in the floor for the exhaust. We didn't want to cut into the walls or roof for an air conditioner, so this has been a great option for us.
Since we're in Louisiana at the moment, I wanted to show how we have it set up just in case you're looking for cooling ideas for your cargo trailer this summer. The temperature was about 90 today with high humidity, but it will get much hotter in the south as we get into summer. If you're not familiar with Louisiana heat, think about a very hot day where you are, go sit in your car for a few minutes and breathe in the hot air - that's close to Louisiana in the summer. It can be a challenge to cool your cargo trailer in those conditions, but keep in mind you should build out your cargo trailer conversion to suit the conditions where you intend to camp.
