Our friend Julia told me that once when she and Tom were playing at this location (Sutter Creek Ice Cream Emporium in Sutter Creek, California), a couple was sitting there listening, then the man got up and dropped a $100 bill into the cup. He said, "I've paid much more than that over the years to hear people who weren't half as good."

"Talent" is a word uncultured people use. Those people are the ones that we call "ignorant". Calling someone "talented" is like a Chihuahua barking at a distance. Just because you think you know what you are talking about towards what someone else does for a hobby does not make you an immediate enthusiast of that hobby. Therefore, "talent" is a word people use when they don't understand the depth of that hobby, what it truly takes to cherish that skillset. I've drawn and written like crap at a young age, but over time, I've continued to pursue progression and I've gone a very long way. People tell me I'm "talented". It only means they don't know what it's like to fully embrace its value like I have. Throw your ego out the window. You are not wise. You cannot analyze correctly. Stop the butthurt. You don't really know how words are used, especially when you haven't heard them enough.

Tom is a fixture (often the only performer it seems) at the Mother Lode Ragtime Society meetings in Sutter Creek, and performs regularly at a Straw Hat Pizza, I think in Rancho Cordova on Wednesdays or something. He plays at the Ragtime Corner during the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, but certainly a festival like Sutter Creek is a good opportunity to hear him several times. Because he reads so well, there's always some obscure tune he digs out that even I've never heard before in each of his sets.

I'm pretty sure a gameboy chip could reproduce Tom's version. The three channels aren't really a hindrance as to the complexity of the music. The memory on the gamboy cart, however, is. The original version is a fairly short loop because they had to reserve most of the memory for the game itself, but if all we aimed to do was make a complex song, I'm certain it could be done. Not by me, of course, I'm not that good with LSDJ.
