I used to carry a multi-position ladder a mile into the woods on public ground, install $30 Walmart cameras 15-20 feet up trees without low-hanging branches set back at least 30 yards from a field edge or walking trail, and secure them with cables and padlocks...and they would still be stolen every fall. This is a secluded, low-traffic place where I've seen maybe 2 other hunters in the 8 years I've hunted there. I've given up putting out cameras. I've hunted here for so long I know the property and where the deer move, the cameras were just to track individual bucks since in-person scouting was logistically impractical.

What are you standing on to get up on the tree? Or are they special shoes??

I carry a climbing stick with me to be able to get the camera off the ground and out of reach of most anyone who may pass by. - Brian

I tape leaves to and around my cameras. The human eye picks up on the straight lines and angles of man made objects especially in the woods. I’ve never lost a camera camouflaged with leaves.

That's a great tip. Thanks for sharing!

Can't stand finding trail cameras when all we're trying to do is escape people and tech when hiking/camping. We disperse camp in the backcountry for this reason. We've setup our entire campsite before only to find a damn camera pointed at us. Usually twist them in a different direction, then twist them back when we leave. I know there's no expectation of privacy in public, but when you hike 4+ miles into the woods off-trail just to sit down next to a cam, it's infuriating. Learn to hunt and track without cameras... jeez.

The same argument could be made to educate yourself and not camp in deer hotspots. You can’t be mad at someone else for enjoying the wild that is available. The difference is. You hike and camp somewhere for a day. Some of those cameras are tracking a single buck for years of its life.
