A few things that I have learned over the years with game camera's is that i set the sensitivity to medium and i always clear away any tree branches and brush that can move with the wind and give you 5000 pictures of wind blowing

Great advice, another thing is to try to mount the camera to a tree that's at least 4 inches in diameter, they don't tend to sway in the wind as much and a bigger diameter tree allows the camera to blend in better instead of sticking out like a sore thumb 👍

Great tips, Dave! Anyone who is new (or even experienced) with trail cams should watch this and learn from the best. Having learned from the best myself, I can add that if you want to set up trail cameras in your Philadelphia suburban yard, make sure you turn the "Kids Playing in the Yard" and the "Delivery Truck" sensors to OFF, otherwise those are all the images you will capture.😎

Dave, that was a very useful video. I have had some of those issues. I knew about the east to west direction was a no no. One thing I have done with cameras that don't have a view screen was to take my cellphone and use its camera to see which way my camera was pointing and take a picture with my phone. I know that is the best method, but I have done that. Thanks for sharing these tips. Juddie

I always put some bait down on the trail, this will tend to keep the subject in the best spot, I've put dried cat biscuit down for foxes and badgers and was surprised to see deer delicately picking them up. It does not have to be food, an obstacle like a fallen log will slow an animal down for the camera, just make sure you do not leave your scent. I fully endorse the previous comment on clearing away waving grass etc. my worse experience was with rippling water or dappled sunlight.

I use the Spyhigh mounting system, it has a laser pointer aiming device to pin point where the sensors are seeing. This system also allows you to mount high and at almost all angles.

Great tips! I have one camera that gets that flare effect from the morning sun(it faces SE but more E)but I like the spot. I may get a camera stand and try a nearby spot to improve those morning clips. I love finding new sites. I try to go back to the cam at a new site the next day or at least within the first week or so for initial checks but doesn’t always happen. Then in between checks spiders build webs and weeds grow lol! Take care Dave, Char 😊

I avoid pointing south as well in the winter due to the sun being so low, any sun on the plastic lens will blast the picture. I also avoid any tree trunks in the view finder that are too close, the camera will auto adjust too much with the reflected IR and anything farther than the tree will be much too dark to see. Same as your position with the open field behind you for your test, your image is too dark due to the open sky and pasture, try to keep the bright sky out of day pictures if possible.

Great tips Dave! I learned these when I was a part of the DNR's Snap Shot program. We would send photos in after 3 months, we would identify the animals and send them in. I think the biggest one I remember was to carry a 3ft piece of string or rope because, well, deer aren't as tall as people make them out to be! 😂😂

The first two I definitely had to learn the hard way, especially before cell cameras. The other camera looks perfect only to get in front and realize that it's to far to the left or right. In my case, almost all my cameras are hung high so it's even more important to make sure it's how you want it. Less room for play. Great tips.

Great tips, as they are usually overlooked. The one extra tip that comes to mind, that I saw you used but didn't comment on, is to use a piece of paracord or steel cable to hang your camera instead of the strap. The horizontal 1-2" strap stands out visibly to animals and humans.

They`re great for bird pictures at feeding sites. I use an old trampoline and dryer left on this lot and put the seeds under two feet away. You can later crop the pictures to zoom in on the birds. Some cheaper cameras (driveway alarms too) will leak so I seal mine with pipe tape and duct tape. If I have trail cameras set up in my area driveway alarms can alert me to activity if bait is left. Some have ranges up to a mile. These are great for fruit tree and vegetable garden security too if pests are stealing the crops.
@TrehanCreekOutdoorsАй бұрын
If you have an extra camera, set up TWO cameras at a given location. Put the main camera in the primary spot in the manner Dave discusses in this video. However, be aware deer learn EXACTLY where that camera is. Many wise bucks, and even a few wily old does, will walk AROUND the camera to avoid being captured on video, even if it means getting off a game trail. But if you put a second camera taking a video from an offset angle that essentially looks at the first camera, it will capture any animals that try to avoid the main camera. If possible, try hiding the second camera somewhat so that it won't be as easily seen. Raising the height is a good way to make the second camera less noticeable.

In a new spot I'll set them up, come back in a week and see if it needs adjusting. Or even move it if the location doesn’t seem as good as I expected. Don't have a screen on my cameras and don't want to carry a laptop way back in the woods. But have set up enough that they're pretty easy to aim now and you can just wedge a stick behind them to make angle adjustments. I also like to have cameras facing north during the winter since the sun is always somewhere to the south. At least in heavy woods you don't have to worry about the sun so much.

I wouldn't put my cam facing south as flappy branches in the sun trigger my cam, north only. Video always tops stills. I got a Spypoint and the image quality isn't great even in HD and in night mode it's so hard to see things. Video you get many images which gives away the animal, if lucky :) Secure the cam, I had a Campark TC17 stolen as it has no fixings to secure it. Nice bit of kit to go walkabout :p Wire Padlocks are good. In UK we got an Ofcam map of mobile signal strength across the Country which is handy for 4g cams. Lithium rechargeables are great but expensive. I tried other types and cold sucks out the power. Even Eneloop (white or black version) don't do well with me. :/ Format SD card each time you set up cam, with spypoint you restore factory settings otherwise it gets confused when switching on and off, very glitchy. Also use their Low Signal cable aerial as the generic aerial isn't up to being out in the wilds. In UK you have to get permissions to use camera as all and is owned by someone. They can get crabby if they find your cam and you can get booked for it. Forestry England will put a ticket on your cam and will remove it and destroy the cam if not removed with a couple of weeks of your cam being found. UK is bonkers!

I use steel security cases lag bolted to the tree. One mistake I made a few times. Not making sure the camera was not point up at the leaves. You not only miss everything you also get hundreds of false triggers from the blowing leaves. Another way to avoid false triggers is to select spots that do not have small bushes or tall grass. Many false triggers with this. also make sure there are no branches in front or to the immediate side. At night the IR will hit these and wash out your video

I have the best results putting cameras perpendicular but farther back from the trail so the sensor swath is wider. As an example, I have a camera that's a 45 degree angle to a road where vehicles are going 10-20 mph. I get a photo of every vehicle going one way and zero of them going the other way because coming right to left the vehicle is farther away so the sensor doesn't trigger until the vehicle is in the center frame and it's gone out of frame left by the time the photo goes off. If you shoot photo + video the video happens after, so if you have a lot of photos where the video is nothing, this is what's happening.

Hi. I had bought a cell camera and was on private property hunting for the first time so i set my other camera facing my locked cell camera and i got a video showing me the camera turning-called owner to see if anyone was on the property-no why? Told them and i drove out to check-good 35 minute drive or so to find that someone took the card out of the camera facing the cell camera! Afraid they were going to come back and take my new cell and the other i removed them both! I really enjoyed getting photos on my phone! I shot my personal best with my good friend during bow season!
