Right now I only keep ricefish because of their ease of raising and keeping, their prolific breeding and can live in almost any type of environment. These guys don't get as much love as they should! If you can find them, I highly recommend you give them a shot!

Elyza, thank you so much. Great to see your content. I bought 10 Medakas from you around 1.5 years ago, it was delayed in the airmail and I was so shocked to see when they arrived, they were doing fine! Such hardy little beauties. I've since bred many more, got some nice colors and patterns, currently going for a golden + iridescent (from the platinum) scales and it looks stunning both on side profile and top.

What a great video. I just discovered these fish today. I bought two because of their personalities, calm nano fish that explored rather than shoaled. Their look was simple like pond minnows, but with beautiful blue green iridescent eyes. When I got home and went online what a surprise! Bred for hundreds of years, over 200 domesticated variations, can live in brackish as well as fresh water, and tolerant of a range of temperature from 3 - 42° C, incredible! Mine are in a well planted tank with cherry shrimp. Thanks again, your video was a joy (and I'll look for Bug Buffet).

This was so helpful. I had Golden Ricefish, years ago. Where I live now, it's hard to find certain fish. I just by chance and luck picked up some "Blue Sparkle", 4 females and 1 male. They've been breeding every day, but I've never tried to raise the fry. Thanks for this video!

Great video by both of you, I'm still yet to be sold on Ricefish, as a fish keeper I know I should like them but to be honest they don't do anything for me, still I guess they have their place in the hobby, I just hope with the water parameters they can handle they don't become a pest in future, I'd suggest if keeping them in a pond that we make sure those ponds don't overflow into our waterways, I don't think they would be as bad as Livebearers but the thought still worries me, I'd still prefer to keep natives in a pond, I guess they are cool for beginners being so hardy, maybe I'll have to try some one day they may grow on me, I hope this comment didn't upset anyone that loves them just something to think about, if you get sick of them always try and return them to your local pet store, it may be a cool project to do a biotope on them down the track Nick and Elyza 🙂

Once you aim for breeding the rarer colors & patterns, they are very similar to Koi & fancy guppies. Patterns & colors are almost unlimited.

@@SilverforceX I'd probably go more for the wild type myself, but in saying that I do love guppies and Koi, I may look into what their habitat looks like and try them one day in a biotope aquarium, it's one of those things each to their own, some people might say some of our natives are boring and then salivate over these where I find them much nicer, there is a fish for everyone 🙂

My question is, with mop spawning fish, why do breeders remove the eggs from the mops as opposed to have multiple mops and just plop the berried mop in the rearing tank?
@snekysneks

my best guess is so that they 1; 15:22 know how many eggs they have, and 2; can remove bad eggs.

Can they survive on the spawning mop with the parents or do you have to separate them?
@mandyliu246
@mandyliu246 Жыл бұрын
I believe they seperate them to increase the chances of them surviving. In a seperate tank you can also treat the water with paraguard or methylene blue to ensure the eggs don't get fungus growing on them.

I’ve always found guppies & swordtail the easiest to breed due to live birth. Fish eggs can be so fragile depending on species. I remember as a kid buying swordtails from the pet store not realizing they were ready to pop. The next day fry were swimming around the tank. I was hooked since then. Great video. Breeding any type of animal is very interesting.

To add, in regards to fertilization, I have witnessed their mating rituals many times. The males will follow females that are ready to release eggs, and they are quite persistent. The males do a little display, they flash their pelvic fins at the females to signal. If the female accepts, they briefly come together and the male fertilizes the eggs as it exits the female. It is not good to have more males than females, since the males are extremely aggressive during mating season and will chase and pester the females non-stop causing fatigue.
