Look at it though, Goldberg never won the world title again after losing to Nash. They gave it to Jeff Jarrett like 1000 times, David Arquette and Vince Russo once but not Goldberg. During Goldberg's title reign Hogan still mostly main evented, even when Goldberg's segments did huge ratings and he was white hot. You can't kill the golden goose before you have something as hot or hotter to replace it. Hogan was behind the finger poke of doom though, so overall he gets more blame than Nash. But Nash definitely had huge influence in beating Goldberg.

@norbertschnurrbart9364 жыл бұрын
@Blvck Lvnd "he was done without the belt" -I don't think he was done in the fans minds. I just think he was way too over to not be champion again. Like I said he was THE guy in WCW. Can you imagine Austin losing the title to Kane in June 98 and never regain it? Or Rock never again regaining it after losing it at WM XV? You would send a message to the fans, that you don't care about them! That's the message WCW was sending to fans like me who liked WCW, but chose to quit watching it, because "I wasn't good enough for WCW to give me something that i wanted". So I just watched WWF instead. I think a lot of people felt the same, because a lot of people stopped caring about WCW around 1999! "He couldn't get over unless he was booked in nothing but squash matches, no psychology, no storyline, just Goldberg Spear & Jackhammer every single match" - That's one way to look at it. But look at Goldberg at the time. He was a monster. Anything other than him destroying guys left and right wouldn't have gotten him over! And he did it in a way you believed it. Kind of like the Road Warriors. They looked like they could kill you and that's what they did. And I don't think any other booking would have gotten them as over! But you can't really deny their success can you? And they eventually learned how to work, so could Goldberg in time! "The Rock was the most over Superstar in the WWF/E without having the belt multiple times" - I agree he got so over because of his talent! He is a once in a lifetime Superstar, one of the biggest of all time who is so talented he became one of the most popular actors in current time as well as you might know. And because he was so over, that is why he became a 8 or 9 times World Champion. "He was Mark with no character depth" - Was he a mark? Yes, he probably was. No character depth? Does Brock Lesnar have any character depth? Was he such a box office attraction in UFC because of his "character" or because he was a monster who was destroying guys? Goldberg kind of was a take on MMA. I would rather say he got over despite of no character depth, angles or storylines because he was believable! "You just cannot get over the fact that Bill just wasn't as good as he was Booked to be" - Eventhough I agree that he was careless in the ring and a limited worker, you can't deny the fact he is one of the biggest superstars of modern wrestling! Just look at the live gates, ratings and ppv buys when he was on top of WCW. Or just look and listen at the reactions he got when he came back in 2016! "Berg Mark" Yes I was a huge Goldberg fan back then. Eventhough I liked Austin and Rock more, I am sure I wasn't in the minority enjoying Goldberg in WCW in 1998/early 1999!
@Raytheman5814 жыл бұрын
@Blvck Lvnd Your story is messed up, the rock did have the belt mutliple times, he's a 6 time world champ and he was like a 3 time world champ back in the attitude era. Regardless of goldberg not being good in the ring he had character, he had the ability to pull off his moves right and make things look like they hurt. I don't see many people saying goldberg was good in the ring, but he was over with the fans and he stayed over with the fans through his whole run even without the streak. I just think you people hate ultimate warrior type characters, but remember he couldn't wrestle either and he was super over as well. Saying he was all hype is just ignoring history that he was still really over from 99 to 00 even outside of squash matches. in 99 he barely even had any squash matches. And no i'm not a goldberg mark, I just hate when people get revisionist history just cause they hate someone. Your comment almost makes me think you didn't even watch wcw.

WcW had buried pretty much everything by 99 or would finish the job in 99. Buried the cruiserweight division, took the 3 most popular luchadores masks, the TV Title division used to be a GOOD COMPETITIVE division then you see them throwing the title in the trash, they used to keep all the divisions relatively seperate, but man, to me it seemed like Nash would always be burying storylines that didn't have to do with him.
@Sluggen7n74 жыл бұрын
@@Tony-fq5bn I believe the last great WCW show was Spring Stampede 99 with a great undercard, mid card and main event but after that they were out of gas. When they switched nitro sets and wcw logo in April 99 it was almost a symbolic change that change wasn't for better. The last 3 months in 2001 they were bringing back the cruiserweights and was excited to see where it could of gone if WWF didn't buy it. Nash was massively over in 1998 with or without his politics. The main storyline was NWO split that entire year and the way they kinda threw it in the trash with "the band" getting back together was garbage. From 1996 until here the loyal WCW fans wanted to see the Outsiders turn on Hogan. We never really got that besides the two weeks after Starrcade. Nash having the belt would of been far more refreshing then having the next 3-4 months having title focus on Hogan and Flair again.

Basically, for those who didn't experience it live, Goldberg was white out for a brief period. However, shortly after he beat Hogan, while he was still popular, he did start to get more boos and they did have to start piping the chant in, because he couldn't talk, he couldn't really put on a good match and he'd already beaten everybody else. That's why a lot of fans from that time (Like myself), say that Page should have beat him at the Havoc (As Hall used to refer to it) with the Diamond Cutter. After that, he'd kicked out of the Diamond Cutter, no sold the chokeslam, kicked out of two Hogan leg drops and barely even sold half the weapons used against him. No regular move was going to do it and Goldberg was eventually starting to get booed. For Goldberg, it was a mix of rightfully suspecting that somebody had it out for him, but at the same time being too inexperienced to understand how grateful he should have been by that point.

Your choices at that time were Nash, Hall, Hogan, Sting, or DDP.. Had to be a big star, fans wouldn’t have accepted a lower level talent even if they were cult fav. I liked the match and finish personally. Goldberg got tasered. 1-2 punch by the outsiders. It’s made Goldberg look super strong in defeat imo. Starrcade 1998 was WCW’s last decent PPV. Their last hurrah if you will. I remember my interest in WCW fizzling out shortly after. I believe last WCW PPV I watched was Slamboree 99. After that I would tune into WWF all the time and wouldn’t even switch channels. But right away the quality drop between Starrcade 98 and Souled Out 99 was very visible. I mean they opened Souled Out 99 with Chris Benoit vs a jobber. The first 3 matches or so seemed like something out of WCW Saturday Night.

I remember hearing a similar story to Goldberg not being cool with losing in WWE where Triple H beat him in Dec 03 for the belt and Goldberg pitched a fit to where H had to go up and ask him if there was a problem and Goldberg said no. I think Goldberg was just ultra competitive in his younger days because any time he loses now there doesn't seem to be any issue.
@wpgjets4life2 жыл бұрын
I think the first signs that Goldberg was developing attitude problems, is when Chris Jericho brought out a Goldberg imposter, that was 5'5/140. Jericho then would boast about how he defeated Goldberg. Backstage, Goldberg was furious that Jericho was mocking him, and went to Bischoff and Hogan to make Jericho stop the angle. Jericho mentioned how over the angle was getting, and that he pitched an idea, for Goldberg to squash him on the WW3 pay per view. Goldberg was yelling at Jericho in a meeting, but Hogan heard Jericho out, and thought he had a point. Goldberg reluctantly agreed to face Jericho on the PPV. Shortly before the PPV was going to happen, Goldberg told WCW management that he was going to book off the PPV dates, since he wanted to go hunting. Unbelievably, WCW granted Goldberg his wish, and Jericho ended up fighting Bobby Duncum Jr. at the PPV. Jericho said that it was a turning point, and realised WCW was never going to push him, and refused to resign a contract, before leaving for WWE in mid 99.

@@wpgjets4life Goldberg should have been better about losing, but HHH beating him in the Elimination Chamber was a terrible idea. Goldberg was going to implode sooner or later. He didn't work his way into the business....He just got lucky that he had the right look and and was at the right place at the right time. People were getting tired of his big "streak" where he wasn't fighting the people that would have been a challenge and couldn't handle the real wrestlers he did wrestle. He was kind of like the Ultimate Warrior with less talent. Honestly, he didn't get beat clean at Starcade, so if he hadn't broke his damned hand, he would have been right back into the fray. Later on when they tried to turn him heel...THAT probably hurt his career. But the Starcade thing wasn't that bad. Just gave him an excuse to have good heat with the NWO. Goldberg just started believing the hype. Not saying he's not a talented guy....He got better as he went along. But....You can tell he's just not into it. He's more into acting and that sort of thing. And overall....Starcade 98 wasn't a bad show! At least, I didn't think it was. There were definitely worse pay-per-views. The lower and mid-card were both awesome at that time and kind of made up for the weaker main events. The wrestling fans could enjoy the action for the first 2/3's.
