This past weekend I had the pleasure of being at the farm and celebrating my grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary! I am so grateful for Papa Bill and Mama Jane and the love they have shared. For the past little while Papa Bill has been battling dementia. Watching him and Mama Jane love each other “for better or for worse, in sickness and in health…” has been a sweet testimony of faithfulness. Dementia is a heartbreaking disease but we are treasuring every moment we have together. This week we share pieces of my grandparents' wedding video captured 60 years ago along with childhood memories and special glimpses of the farm from years gone by. Watching through these old home movies with them both and hearing my Papa Bill chuckle as certain memories came back to his mind brought so much joy to my heart! My grandparents' love and dedication to each other and to family is a gift that I will treasure forever!

As a retired nurse, I spent many years caring for those with dementia and their families... I always told the families that while their minds may not remember you, their hearts always do. On occasion they will have moments of clarity that become precious gifts. Prayers and much love to all of the Bates family, especially Mama Jane and Papa Bill during this time.

The important thing for some to learn is that the person may not remember you, but you remember them. That is why they should be visited. You are honoring who they still are deep within.

My sweet mama was diagnosed with dementia that ended up turning into Alzheimer's. Believe me when i say it never gets easier to watch your loved one forget little by little. One thing i want all of you to remember is that Papa Bill still loves you no matter his mind set. Remember all of the good times, remember who he was before the disease took over. All of your love and patience with each other will help in the long run. Dementia is a horrible thing, that rips the once vivacious loved one from us. With God's love and understanding you can get through it. Prayers for all of you.

I thank you so much for letting me be a part of these memories. I love Kelli and Gil so much as well. The Bates are an amazing family. God has blessed and used them greatly. They all have been useable. That's the part you must be useable. God bless each of you. Happy anniversary papa and Jane. Ty Micheal and Brandon

OMG same! Just bawling. My late father-in-law had dementia- but he got it after my late mother-in-law died, so we had to help him, and it was so so hard and watching my kid's broken hearts because Bumpa didn't know them anymore. Anyway, just keep praying. That's all we can do!

I got teary eyed watching Papa Bill's and Mama Jane's wedding video. I was thinking how God never designed us to get old and whither away. The enemy hated us so much, he caused this. I'm 43 now and it's such a weird feeling getting older. You see yourself when you were once young and think it was a lifetime ago. It is a blessing to get older. Thank you for sharing such precious memories. We keep all of you in our hearts and prayers. God bless everyone.

Dementia is very tough. There r about 7 types of dementia. My Dad (who passed) had vascular dementia. Mom has Alzheimer’s. She’s been in a PCH for 8 years. My mom went through a difficult time of rage for many years & I’m sick thus the decision for PCH. It’s a beautiful new home with excellent care. I often think it the natural way. Hopefully. Parents raise their kids then the children in turn care for them. My mom has calmed down & at peace (Thank the Lord) now and although barely speaks & doesn’t know me…she does perk up when she sees me…so there is some recognition of sorts. Did her nails/hair yesterday & while we listened to live hymn music presented we held hands and she stroked mine. That was very special. 🇨🇦 ❤

A few years ago I had heart failure from sepsis. Died 3 times. When I came off life support I'd lost all my memory. It's hard to know there's a whole life you can't remember. In time I got most of it back but there's still gaps, things from my kids childhood I lost. Made me so aware of how horrible dementia must be. 60 years together is such an awesome gift, so few can have that. I had only 43 years with my husband when God took him home. He was my treasure & I never stop missing him, but I'm thankful for what we did have.

I moved in to my parents house for four months in 2022 to take care of my dad and my mom's parents who lived in a mother-in-law apartment. I'm so thankful I have a husband that was totally supportive. I've always taken care of him, the house and meals and he was by himself for four months. My Gpa (my abbreviation for Grandpa) had dementia. We were lucky, because he was like a fun school boy. Everyday, I woke up excited to take care of him. When he would wet through his depends several times a day. To save his dignity, I would say, "Gpa, I think you sat in some water'. I would put voice recorder on to record the things he would say. He always had me laughing. My dad passed Feb 9, 2022 and my Gpa Mar 7, 2022. I stayed an additional month to be there for my Gma and mom. I took care of all the logistics when they passed. My mom was the oldest and not capable to take care of things. She just kept saying, I lost the two most important men in my life, my husband and my dad. We lost 6 people total that year. We lost my Gma Feb 28, 2024. You never stop missing them, but it does become less sharp with time. The one year mark makes a huge difference. I find comfort in knowing they were born-again Christians and I will see them again. They didn't die, they just walked from this body on. Though it seems like they've been gone for a long time, it really is but mere seconds for them when they see us again. I lifted you all up in prayer today.

I know your pain regarding dementia. My mother was 72 when dementia reared it's ugliness. I was her only caregiver until I had to place her because I couldn't properly care for her alone. It broke my heart to see her and she didn't know me at all. The description sounds so simplistic..but it is a horrendous, hurtful disease leaving the dementia patient unable to talk or walk and not knowing how to eat. It's a cruel, cruel disease. I prayed and cried daily. This was a beautiful video. You're very correct in wanting to "fix" everything but dementia teaches you quickly that you must slow down and just listen. Oh how I miss my Mom. But one day..one day we will be reunited..knowing each other in paradise where we will be together with Jesus for eternity. This earth is not our home..this place we call "home" is a mere fraction of the joy we will have with Jesus for eternity...that means forever, unending forever. What joy that will be.

I watched your show when it was on tv. Your grandparents are amazing. My Mom went thru the same thing that your Papa Bill is going thru. Just hang in there and enjoy them while you still have them and keep on loving them. Papa Bill and Mama Jane are in my prayers.

I just love listening to the two of you, no matter what the subject! There is a sweetness that is expressed when y'all share that is so endearing! It draws me in! Additionally, this subject of Michaela's grandparents was handled with so much care and is so, so precious! Thank you for sharing it! You handled it and them with so much respect! Continued prayers all around for Papa Bill, Mama Jane and the entire family!

My mother in law had dementia. We were blessed to have her in our home for a time before she needed to go to a care home. She told such vivid and beautiful memories stories. She thought is was happening then. We were able to experience her memories with her. I am blessed to be able have been apart of it.

This was a wonderful video. Thank you so much for allowing us fans to see it. Your Grandparents are adorable. I know how hard it is for family members to watch a loved one who has dementia. My grandmother had it and at times it can be gut wrenching to see your love one turn into a shell. I will keep your family in my prayers.

What a blessing your Grandparents are to you, and what a blessing you are to them! While Papa Bill's memories and health are failing, nothing can take away the joy of him just loving you so unconditionally and all of the joy they've gotten from their family in return! Love never dies. It lasts for eternity! ❤️

That was absolutely Beautiful Michael & Brandon, thanks so much for sharing, I love Papa Bill and Mama Jane. What a Beautiful Tribute of their 60th Wedding Anniversary those wedding photos or video was absolutely breath taking what a beautiful couple from the inside and out! Mama Jane and Papa Bill were just glowing and so cute! They are still cute! My grandma had Dementia it was so hard. But cherished the time I had with her. I had always listened to her stories about her mother and Father and childhood since I was at the age of 6 years old, so I tried to get her to talk about her mom and I actually got her to say something not exactly what I thought but it was something because she quit talking and would only say B-A B-A. I have always watched you guys and thought I was subscribed but I guess I wasn't. But I am now. I enjoy watching you and all your siblings it gives me so much JOY. I feel I have known you guys forever and never met you but I feel I have. I pray for all your family when the Lord puts it on my heart. I hope one day I would be able to come visit your dads church and maybe get to meet you all that would be so awesome!
