I remember when I was in middle school learning german.many, many years ago...sitting with the family at the dinner table when suddenly in my teenage brain, unrelated to dinner, the difference became clear and I proceeded to explain this to my parents and sisters who must have thought WTF? So I really laughed and clicked on this video!! thanks for the memory.

This is interesting, because in English we usually negate the verb even when talking about objects. "I don't have a dog." is way more common than "I have no dog."

Thank you very much for the explanation. I would like to ask if you have done a video on 'da-' words before. As a non-native speaker, I find those words that begin with 'da-' very difficult. E.g. dafür, daran, darauf, daraus, damit, darüber, etc. I know they can be translated as '(preposition) + it'. However, they are used as one word in German and seem to appear in different positions. Would you mind doing a video on this topic or telling me if you have done that before? Danke schön!

An older style of English (1800s or so) always used a more German-like use of the word "no" by placing it before the object. (Subject verb "no" object.) It's slightly less common, but some use cases are still the norm. For example, the following are pretty common sentences today: "He drinks no alcohol." = "He doesn't drink alcohol." "I am no fool!" = "I am not a fool!" So, this concept should be pretty straight-forward to native English speakers. :)

I think it's okay to say "I drink no alcohol" in English. So it's similar to German. Thanks for a clear explanation! I've just started studying German and was puzzled by "kein(e)".
@daveemberton52714 жыл бұрын
Yes. I drink no alcohol = I don't drink alcohol = I don't drink any alcohol. I think the third one is the most common. If you can replace what you're saying with the form with "no" in English then you want kein in German.

People would understand what you mean by "I drink no alcohol" and it is not grammatically incorrect, but it is not idiomatically correct. People say, "I don't drink alcohol", or more often, as stated in the video, simply "I don't drink" - by that it is understood that you are talking about alcohol. Similarly, a vegetarian would say "I don't eat meat". "I eat no meat" would sound clumsy.
@konradhalman51044 жыл бұрын
nicht = not kein = no don't = do + not In English in most cases you use "don't" because the verb cannot be negated with the word "not" alone; which is restricted to the modal verbs.

For what it's worth: the subtitles at 2:21 and 2:24 show "it" instead of "ist", one error that invariably trips me up when quickly typing sentences in German (and concentrating on the hundred and one *other* aspects I'm trying to get right 😂😂) I also recommend anyone looking for a slightly different take on the position of nicht/kein to look at Emanuel's article ( yourdailygerman.com/position-nicht-german/ ) and its follow-up. He boils it down to one fairly straightforward idea: nicht/kein *always* comes directly before what it is negating, *as long as you regard the conjugated verb as living at the end of the sentence*, as per a Nebensatz. There's still some elaboration and a generous serving of "Sprachgefühl" sprinkled on top of that, of course, but the basic idea is super-easy and really helpful.

This is an excellent series of videos. Congratulations. This particular video does remind me that my old brain has some trouble keeping up when the speaking is fast, as it is at times here. I'm wondering about the two sentences, "Ich kann kein Deutsch," and "Ich kann nicht Deutsch sprechen." I have heard both. Am I correct that this is an example of the contrast of negating a noun as opposed to negating a verb, thus the "kann" in one and the "nicht" in the other?

@itsanna63434 жыл бұрын
@@magenoir999 es ist beides richtig... aber zb. wenn jetzt deine Mutter od. so sagt "Du gehst jetzt duschen!" ist es halt bedrohend. "Geh jetzt duschen!" ist einfach ein befehl. (die 1.
