“We've had Keir Starmer out in Washington and it has been a charm offensive and then some.”
The “mood music is very, very positive” as Keir Starmer meets world leaders for the first time as prime minister in Washington DC, with plans to strengthen economic ties with Europe, reports political editor Steven Swinford.

I get leaving the EU ( sort of ), but leaving the single market was a move you can't really explain the benefit of.
@merrymachiavelli2041
@merrymachiavelli2041 20 күн бұрын
Eh, to play devil's advocate, a single market requires quite a lot of political integration and centralised decision making. To make a single market work, you need a single set of regulations around tariffs, food, product safety...etc. It's a lot more expansive than people realise (because most of the rule-making is mind-numbingly boring and technical). If you are somebody who is truly and sincerely unhappy with EU political authority overriding that of British law-makers, then I think it's logically consistent to object to Britain being part of the single market. Personally, I'm willing to surrender a bit of sovereignty for the sake of mutual benefit, but that's a political choice.
@ahaveland
@ahaveland 19 күн бұрын
@@merrymachiavelli2041 None of the members surrendered sovereignty. Brexit was a lie manufactured by billionaires that didn't want to have to declare their offshore havens and pay tax, and F the rest of us. The leave campaign used Russian propaganda techniques with their support, as it would weaken both UK and Europe to Putin's advantage in taking Crimea and Ukraine. There are no coincidences.

So far, it seems, that Labour have set about doing the sorts of things that you'd have hoped the UK government would be doing. They're not my ideal party (which, sadly, doesn't exist, and would never lead a government if it did) but it's certainly refreshing to have what looks like fairly competent people, with the interests of the country, in charge. A shame that for years we've had to put up with the idiotic choice of a minority of voters.
@finncullen
@finncullen 20 күн бұрын
Regarding "Not my ideal party," I heard something the other day that rang true. Voting for a party is not like choosing a spouse where you wait for the exact right person to come along. It's more like choosing a bus... you find the one that's going closest to where you want to go and get on that one.

I'm a Canadian and was a moderate conservative voter. In our country, we had a progressive conservative party. We also had a hard right party and the split conservative vote always gave the liberals the power. So the two conservative parties united. After that the conservative party won. We have had a liberal leadership since 2015 and they have made an absolute mess of our country and its economy. In the next election, the conservatives are destined to win. My fear is about how far right will Canadian conservatives go. The conservative movement needs to understand that most voters don't want extremes from either side of the ideological divide. The British people and the French people have shown us that is the case. Will conservative politicians accept that reality?

France has offered multiple times to allow the installation of immigration processing centers under British control on the French coasts where immigrants and refugees could have their claims processed legally. The successful immigrants would then be able to the come into the country safely and immediately get to work (and start paying taxes). Those that fail would be rejected and relocated to their place of origin. No small boats. No headlines and a much more efficient and humane approach not to mention it would save a fortune. But the Tories and the rags wanted red meat headlines no matter how much money they wasted and how many people they killed.
