I firmly believe that not all cake needs frosting. You can glaze it (maple syrup, honey, or a fruit compote may be perfect ingredients for glaze), cover it with ganache, dust it with powdered sugar for a smooth texture or brown sugar for a crunch (spices and seeds can add to this), or use some other topping to get a perfectly sweet cake. Pepitas are perfect if you do not want a sweet topping either (the sugar can go in the dough or you can just choose to make a less sweet cake, still tasty af).
