I have been fascinated with this case because it so easily could have been me. I have C-PTSD and got involved with a similar organization in my early twenties. The main idea of the teachings in the Executive Trainings I took was that you were the cause of everything good or bad that happened in your life. Early on this was very empowering to me, but as I grew older it became extremely damaging. I am so glad I found good therapists to work through all of that.
@Sacred-Heart-of-Jesus829

Yes, the whole thing around "you are at cause for everything that happens to you" is brainwashing. While I do believe that we do have control over our immediate environment, if a tornado comes along and destroys your house, thst in itself blows that concept out of the water. We cannot control what other people do. Anyways, that's my two cents.

God is against Idol worship. If one would read othe Word of God, you would know how evil he is. We must depend on God and believe that Jesus is the Messiah and his innocent blood was shed that we, through repentance, obedience can obtain eternal life. If they had read the Bible they might have not believed in Keith as a "god" and realized what an evil manipulator he was. Making one feel that they're not enough. Breaking the women down to serve his own sick needs. God would never make you feel that way. I'm glad that I am not his judge. However, I don't think God would want someone like him in His kingdom! How sad that these beautiful intelligent women were so deceived! Turn to God His Word will tell you what God’s plan is for you. He loves all of His children and wishes that all of His children would come to repentance. He is merciful! He is a healer!! I pray that these women recover and find their way. Watching the Vow I could see what a con man he was!

Such a great analysis. I will refer back to this on my series on skepticism in the quest for life advice. I notice that if you look at most cults - even several famous self development seminars, the word salad, jargon, and crunchy grammar, creates a cognitive dissonance that normally compels a person to fill in the gaps to make sense of things. It grooms people to get used to filling in the gaps and not questioning the nonsense anymore. Before this, Raniere seems to make the subject feel special using NLP mirroring and pacing and an eye lock hypnotic induction, he’s broken down their beliefs and their self-esteem by using their words against them. Then he comes in with The Promise/Salvation. It’s classical brainwashing. Control is maintained with control over their body, social inclusion/exclusion, recruitment mandates and rank, as you, Dr Grande, say, and also with shame or what you call humiliation. . (Collateral in this case). I guess this creates the byproduct of fear. I think shame goes through it all, beyond this singular humiliation. Controlling a woman’s weight works because she comes with a lifetime conditioning of body shame. And oh those flying monkeys! Classic. Same formula, different place: Manson, Jim Jones, and many many self-development seminar systems and many many people with cluster B disorders that we meet ever day. Vulnerable people are candy for these predators. I hope people will be very very wary. The world is facing global trauma. Everyone is more vulnerable. I hope this will help viewers be skeptics of anyone offering life advice or training, right now. Great point about maintaining boundaries and needing to believe. I haven’t seen the Vow but many interviews with Raniere. I’ve seen several smart people fall prey to these kind of situations. Be aware.

What’s really scary about this case is the involvement of extremely wealthy people who completely committed themselves to Raniere i.e. the Bronfman sisters. They spent around $150 million dollars on NXIVM, and used their wealth to persecute and punish NXIVM’s perceived enemies. And they’re not remorseful, either. 😨

I know this comment is late, and I’ve wanted to commend Dr.Grande’s thorough research for some time, I came across this assessment, and decided it was time! This case has fascinated me since I first learned of it, so I tend to read/watch anything I find about it. I thought there was nothing I didn’t already know. However, I should have known that Dr. Grande would find out a few things I hadn’t heard about! I also appreciated the timeline provided. I have one tiny issue, Nancy S was referred to as “Prefect. “Proctor” was a level a student had achieved. It came with a sash color and a payout of thousands of dollars. Thanks for all the fascinating information! Amy

YES, And Evil people gravitate toward religious groups and use them for their own motivations. I am not targeting any particular religion, especially not targeting Catholics ( if which I am)or mainline religions or any clergy, I am talking about a special case or two I know of.. in religious groups I joined and I also know that many students of the study of the disciplines psychology are very messed up, sick people who desire to get control over other people. I have seen that close at hand as well. Be careful out there. I have studied Social Work and saw the persons in school beside me who seemed to have evil motivations and were very suspicious in their way of navigating everything in their life, knowing they would gain control over someone somewhere after graduation. Be careful... but trust your gut. Other people have been hurt by Doctors, judges and psychiatrists.I have a collection of books. I have read a few books on those situations and lived through a few incidents dodging most of them. Some people are power seeking, not just attention seeking. Some are blatantly status seeking, and all of this can harm others in their pathway. Some of these people form a hierarchical ranking and store opinions about everyone they know in order to maintain their illusion of superiority, even with their so called friends with whom they regularly meet and rub shoulders. And when it all hits the fan to be systematically shredded in perfectly cut pieces of shit .....you are left there absorbing each piece of flying excrement as it comes your way and soils you temporarily until you pick yourself up and keep moving forward to step into a warm and loving cleansing bath and shower of cleansing and healing.....Healing does happen.

It's remarkably easy to fall into a scheme like this. Don't ever think you're too smart for them because none of us truly are all the time. It just takes the wrong person to pick up on your weaknesses at a bad time in your life and you'll get sucked in faster and deeper than you could ever imagine.
@justthatgirl-ct4jo

I never thought I could fall for something like this. I'm strong minded and stubborn as hell. It's really interesting how it happens and it has to be just the right set of circumstances it seems. I got involved in a political organization for 2 years, and although that's not technically a cult, some of the practices they used were similar. At the very least, I fell into a toxic cesspool of groupthink. My point is, it made me realize that many of us are more susceptible to things like this than we realize. In my case, they fed off of my need to be a good person. Even though things felt wrong, it was bashed into my head over and over that I was wrong and I'm the bad one, simply put. I went along with things I questioned for longer than I like to acknowledge. Mine is a very small example, but it most definitely made me realize that we can fall victim to things like this easier than we realize. These types of people know how to use your deepest fears, wants, and vulnerabilities against you.

Dr Todd, with great appreciation for your efforts and thoughts, an excellent analysis. The question I would like to see adressed, maybe in a separate series, relate to my two concerns namely whether his punishment was not to sweep societal guilt under the carpet especially questioning sensibility and appropriateness in punishment of him contrasted to a macro context of participant punishment. In short many involved could ethically be unsuitable for what they are going to drift into. Then secondly which is perhaps more in this field of interest, can we really say that our excuse for rehabilitation is making sense and what can we propose specifically in this as a typical instance.

Thank you for analyzing this, I was looking for it!! And you answered a question I had after I watched the series: Is it possible for people to join a cult and have it not completely ruin their life?? And I feel like your position is that, while psychologically broken, Keith Raniere wouldn't have been a problem if he didn't keep pushing the envelope, so while it may not be the healthiest thing in the world to do, joining a cult doesn't have to psychologically ruin you...though I'm probably oversimplifying. It's just something I always wonder about cults and religions because I see them as essentially the same thing.

Thanks for another great video. Can you please do one on Allison Mack? I'm curious to know more about the personality factors of someone so high up in the group. She was someone who genuinely appeared to be a good person in the beginning - albeit a little vulnerable and unhappy after a breakup. And, yet, she plead guilty to some pretty terrible things. When did she become more of a perpetrator rather than a victim? Does she show signs of being a sociopath herself? I get the feeling that all actors are vulnerable narcissists to some degree. Can someone who's personality has been suppressed so aggressively be rehabilitated?
