Bonjour Keith, A special thank you for this video because for me, steam means whistle. Not only do they have a sound utility that is specific to steam, even if they are a bit sharp, and they also allow the pressure of the boiler to drop if necessary. Of course, all my boats, except my speed ones, operating at 8 Bar/120 PSI, have one. Amicalement, Raphaël

Cheers Keith! It’s amazing to see what steam whistles are available for model steam. I’m used to looking at whistles on narrow-gauge locos, where very few whistles are available ready-made. I do plan on making my own steam whistle at some point, so might try a model chime whistle first before making the full-sized thing.

If you want the whistle to sound the same as it's prototype, you need to make it the same length as the original. For example if making a Stanier hooter you need to make one the same length as his. Diameter = how loud a whistle is, most Live Steam gauge engines only have enough space to make the whistle 1-2" diameter so won't be as loud as full size but pitch will or should be the same. These whistles of course you hide under the boiler, running board, cab, or even the tender. Yes I've seen a very nice multi chime whistle under the tender and it worked great

Hi Keith, did you make a video on improving the bell type whistle? I have tried searching but can’t find anything. Regards Myke.

Hi Keith, im just wondering if you could tell me the dimensions of the the first whistle on the video? Also, at what pressure does it run best? Im after something similar to run on compressed air, cheers.

There’s a fantastic sounding whistle on my Freudenstein ‘Penlee’ type constructed by the excellent model engineer, Paul Frank. Only trouble is it is so loud drivers need to wear earplugs. Any way of lowering the volume without affecting the pitch? Wrapping it in gaffer tape wouldn’t look pretty!

Simply fit a simple adjustable valve on the steam Feed to the Whistle to drop the steam pressure . . . . . less steam pressure, less audio volume.

I fitted a DJB engineering steam whistle to my Roundhouse locomotive, it’s a tiny little thing, but sounds fantastic, probably my favourite part of the loco, I’ve got a video of it on my channel if anyone is thinking about getting one, although DJB is fully booked up for 2023 so I had to pay over the odds and get one from Garden Railway Specialists, worth the money, brings the engine to life so to speak

When I think of steam whistles I think of the ones with the deep throat o0f the Union Pacific's #844 and #4014. But then, neither are models and so would never be right here. Keith, I never seem to not be impressed with your skill and knowledge, and whistles, for model steam engines fit the bill too. ;-)

I had no luck in finding the next video on the fine tuning of these whistles. Just way too many videos to search through. Perhaps it's time you number your videos in order.

I made a whistle modification in one of the "My Stirling Single" videos. Not in the "Model Engineering For Beginners" series as far as I can remember. There are over 2500 videos on my channel. Not all of them are public though.
