My wife is a genealogist and spends massive amounts of time researching and documenting ancestors for her family and others. I am continually amazed at the amount of information that has been found and made available for everyone to research their ancestry. Thousands of people are uploading millions of documents to the internet for everyone to use creating a massive database going further and further back in time every time someone adds to it. You are doing the same thing with the documentation on Vintage Machinery. Thank You! I know what a herculean task it is.

Keith. We are going to have to curtail your travels, outings, & times away from home. Not only are you having way too much fun, but we miss you when you're gone. Your place is right here among us deep south folks, in your shop, with your family, and staying close to us who depend on your videos for our entertainment & nourishment. Seriously, great video. So glad you were able to do the trip, and thankful your property was not damaged by the storm. God bless. Bob (Jacksonville, Fla.)

'Whew; that was a lot!' It sure was. Holy cow, so so much. This video reminded me of one of my favorite books, 'Trustee from the Toolroom', by Nevil Shute. Published in 1960, it tells the story of a humble, hard-working editor of a small British magazine for engineering modelers, who ends up traveling the world on a quest to solve a problem. He meets and gets help from folks he's corresponded with through his little magazine, who are part of a world-wide network of like-minded people. Your visits with people from so many varied places, all with an interest in machines, put me in mind of it. It's a great read by a great writer.

I can say that I have read that book in elementary school back in the early 1960s (probably 1962). Nevil Shute is possibly more well known for his novel "On the Beach" (1957) which was made into a movie about the search for surviving remnants of civilization following a global nuclear war.

At 12:58 - Keith is showing his Kant-Twist clamps. These are great and can apply tremendous pressure without getting out of alignment. The jaws rotate and always stay parallel to one another. The jaws also have 0:00 grooves in them to allow clamping to round objects. Some model's jaws are made out of copper (I can't tell if these clamps have that) so they are great for welding.

Awesome! It's great to finally see two of my favorite KZbinrs together! Amazing to see how people with such different American backgrounds have so much in common. Beautiful machine that will be put to ultimate use. Thank you Keith and Jimmy for all the inspiration you have given me. New York: I live in the San Diego area and have basically known my way around LA for over 30 years. Your experience in New York reminds me exactly of my experience in New York. They can have it. But Jimmy's from New York right? And his buddy Mike? I guess they can't be all bad. Great video!

Keith, thanks for the trip recap. Like you, I have an interest in WWII subs, and have been to a few that you mentioned, including the Nautilus in Groton. In my working days from the mid-80's through the late-90's, I had to travel quite a bit for business, and when I had the opportunity to visit a sub museum, I took it. As always, I'm an early riser and am delighted when I see you a long-format video posted.

As an Engineer I have always been interested in submarines, from the early Diving Bells, to the German U-boats (actually sat through "Das Boot" with a friend of mine). We watched the German language version and amazingly I was fairly able to follow along (as I DO speak some German since my Father was in France and Germany in WWII, and I spent 8 years working for the US operation of a German company)! My friend was in the US Navy and actually served on a "Boomer"! Must have been interesting as he to this day can't talk about it much...

One time ages ago I was trying to get from western PA to east hartford CT, and made the mistake of taking what I believe was route 95....thought it went around ny (this was in the day of paper maps in the early 1990's), nope....goes right through NY city...on a major holiday. Not fun when you were used to only a infrequently busy 4 lane highway suddenly dumped into 5+ lanes each way packed solid and everyone doing stupid things. So I feel for your NY pain....since then, I have been in LA traffic (luckily in a cab vs my driving), and LA is worse, but still.

When I retired from the US Navy I went cross country semi driving. One day I got a dispatch "offer", pick up in Kansas City and deliver to Manhattan NY. If I accepted it was worth a $300.00 bonus. I naively took the job. Did the pick up, traveled to NY, followed the computer directions right to the place, no problem... till they told me I wouldn't be unloaded for 3 days. I had to leave the truck and trailer or stay in the truck in a really undesirable spot. 4 days later I was unloaded. $ 1000.00 wouldn't have made it worth it. I never did that part of the east coast again.

You should reach out to the schools that teach Library Science and/or History of Technology. With all the manuals you have putting these in a searchable database with proper cataloging and archiving seems to be a great graduate level research project. Add the challenge of long term data storage and you have a great CS and history collaboration. Plus you could get someone ELSE to scan everything in.

You drove within about 5 miles of my home on this trip. I live between St. Louis and Hannibal, near Troy. We have a large home and welcome travelers frequently. I would have enjoyed hosting you and playing in my shop. The adjustable leveling feet are really nice. I installed several machines that used this style. The wedge gives finer control than traditional leveling bolts, and they don't make the machine "wander" around like can happen with the nose of traditional screws. Some makers use a ball or ball nose and socket to assist or combat that function. I recall that our Toyoda and Kellenberger grinders used those wedge style leveling feet, but I have used them on very large mills and surface grinders. They require raising the machine significantly, which can also demand elevated work platforms, but they are wonderful to use during the machine leveling process. I imagine that cost prevents their more common use. I did one machine installation that used that style, and they were nominally 12"x12". I think that I recall that this mill manufacturer designed casting recesses to accommodate the large leveling pads.

Getting a ships tour of one active duty sub is about as rare as hen's teeth, but two? Honestly if I knew you were going to be in the neighborhood I would have made some phone calls to get you into Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky Plants. The machinery in those two plants are chock full of both the most modern industrial machinery and, well, industrial machinery from the 1920s.
