Out of the gate, the KelTec PMR-30 failed to impress me. With great anticipation it arrived on scene in 2011 and ran hard with us in the Eat Lead and Have No Fear Drills [see vids]. It choked lots and I was embarrassed for KelTec. In those videos I did not hold back and said how it sucked. Fast forward two years. With several changes made this generation, the PMR-30s we tested this year shot better. Generational changes are discussed. Being extremely lightweight, only 20 ounces fully loaded, the PMR is hard to shoot accurately for me. Strong adherence to the fundamentals is mandatory. But it's firepower and cheaper ammo than the excellent FN Five Seven are huge draws to this high value gun. You will have to decide if the .22 Win Mag is adequate for your purposes; hitting power discussed. Its extremely low recoil is a huge selling point for this fast firing, easy to control pistol. In the review, ergos, POUs, materials, durability, reliability, sights, and the quirks of the PMR-30 are discussed as I attempt to answer if it stacks against the Five Seven, saving you lots of money. Excellent CeraKote colors are now offered and shown within the video for this 2012 test and review [two shot]. Downsides remain the magazine which I suspect is the culprit of the malfunctions we encountered and it really needs to be made of steel says me. I would not integrate a PMR-30 into my Bug Out kits on the account of the unsure reliability, toughness to shoot well, and dubious stopping power of the .22 mag./////////////////////////// ///////// Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 6 out of 10

What people dont realize, is that if you can get comfortable with this gun, 30 rounds of 22 Magnum is game over, period.

There is a lot of Kel-Tec bashing in this thread. I have or have owned a P3AT, PF-9, two Sub2000s, an SU-16, and just ordered a PMR-30. I carried the PF-9 for two years. Out of all of them the only real failure I ever had was the P3AT broke an extractor almost immediately which was promptly replaced by Kel-Tec free of charge and then never had any other issues with it. All of the guns ran well. What people have to realize is that Kel-Tec plays where others fear to go. They make extremely lightweight and/or compact guns which due to simple physics are harder to get to run reliably than larger heavier guns. So they accomplish something more difficult for less money. Also being almost entirely polymer these guns will eventually wear out, they are not heirloom quality and are not meant to be. The flip side however is that KT will stand behind them and fix them essentially forever. Quit comparing Timex to Rolex. Yes I wear Timex for the much better value!

FN Five seveN: $1300, PMR30: $300. You are correct in your assessment- high value. Of course it's not going to compete with the Five-seveN!

In the description he says "I would not integrate a PMR-30 into my Bug Out kits on the account of the unsure reliability", but in the vid he says they have excellent reliability after break in. People I know that have them also say they run great with high quality ammo. I just ordered one from CDNN for $439. CCI will be my primary load, some cheaper Armscor for plinking. I bought mine specifically for my get home bag. I can easily carry 500 rounds of ammo and with that capacity ammo compatibility just isn't an issue for a "get home" gun. If I have to shoot that much on the way home and am still alive I will have my pick of other weapons! I'm considering the 5" threaded barrel for flash suppression and blast redirection (these things are LOUD!), the small velocity boost is an added plus. I'm on a waiting list for a CMR and those two will make an excellent "Get Home" combo IMHO.

I think a 22 wmr for self defense would be sufficient. More people die from 22lr in America than any other caliber. definitely with a 30 round mag? Hell Yea!

I like the philosophy, nutn. That's why I prefer your channel when compared with others. Instead of making snap judgments from an "unboxing" review and putting a few dozen rounds through it, you actually shoot the thing how I would: A LOT. That's where you find problems and realize where the gun is actually at.

Still lookin' for an available "2.0" model. I don't see a valid argument against the PMR30. No, it won't have the power and reliability of a centerfire round. But ! It will allow one to carry, for the price of a decent quality 22LR CARBINE, (ex: my Ruger 10/22) and the cost of rimfire ammo, with the firepower of extended magazines, in a HOLSTER ! Add the 22WMRs jacketed projectiles along with its disposable cartidge casings, and its a firearm that will do a LOT of the things a firearm is useful for.

I wonder how the accuracy would be shooting 50 gr? I'm sure with the ballistics of the round the point of aim would be lower. This would be better for close range. Although I wonder what KelTec is setting these sights up for.. If its 50 yards, testing should be done at that range. All said and done, the firearm seems to produce decent groups. If the trigger is as good as you say it is, I see no reason to throw some sights (or a red dot) on it and go :)

ha! if you can hold 30 x .22s in the same space you can hold 18 x 9mm, the 30 x .22 is a better choice. With your logic, if you need 18 bullets, you need to improve your aim, get a revolver. But wait! If you need 6 bullets, you need to improve your aim, get a derringer. OR MAYBE I SHOULD CHOSE WHAT MAKES SENSE. 30 bullets, just as deadly as any of the smaller pistol rounds, in a tiny compact package.

In my honest opinion, The PMR-30 isn't very good compared to the FN Five-SeveN. Not saying it's a bad gun, I like the PMR 30 and Five-SeveN, but look at the facts: The Five Seven, loaded with FNH basic Blue-Tip 5.7x28 Rounds, Has virtually no recoil and can literally, In the Hands of an experienced Shooter, Pepper the Bullseye on a Paper target at 100 Yards. The PMR has no recoil but it's accuracy over long ranges is....Questionable. The PMR Beats the Five Seven, however, In price and Ammo Availability. The Five seven Nabs this gun everywhere else, including looks. This gun looks Very Boxy. The Five seven is smaller and Looks A lot Better made, and Even with a Shorter barrel, Retains remarkable accuracy at over 75 yards.

I agree what's harder to find 22 or 5seven rounds seeing as the five seven rounds are not commercially available that's a sign to stock up if u can afford a 1200$ gun nutn is stockpiling 22s for like ever I'm my honest opinion get the middle go 9mm or 45 theirs alott of them and u have a wide variety of choice if 9mm guns glock u can swap barrels and use both rounds in them

footpounds equal shit, unless you're talking enough to overcome the elasticity of tissue, which would take a VERY powerful pistol round (or a standard rifle round) but that takes a much, much larger, heavier, pistol. Obvious downside. It's about PLACEMENT. a .22 mag round will pierce right through a human torso. just making the hole a bit bigger with a .45 won't make that much of a difference if your placement is bad, and with a .22 you can fire much more rapidly and accurately with follow ups.

This weapon is UNSAFE and DANGEROUS to use: Twice I had to replace the disassembly pins in a period of time of 500 rounds shot with it. But the worst is that the barrel chamber on mine literally exploded, it disintegrated ! What is unacceptable is in this day and age with manufacturing and design technology that a chamber would detonate using KelTec approved CCI Maxi-Mag, as suggested in the owner's manual: This chamber is made out of cast !!! I am now waiting to see what KelTec will do with these issues. I still have no reply to my complaints !

I'm liking that your honest about KT. There's too many people saying "KT is junk," but the reality is that ALL manufacturers will have some issues and KT has a few more just because that's the state of their QC. I'm not big on blanket statements of criticism or approval. Saying, "every gun in an individual from KT" is an awesome way to sum things up at this point.

.22 magnum is not a bad round but it doesn't compare to the 5.7mm of the Five Seven. The military grade (not neutered civ rounds) have better kinetic energy , better penetration, etc. Close, but not a fair comparison.

I'd like to see a PMR-30 in .22lr to throw in the BOB with my Ruger 10/22 Take down. I love the idea of this pistol with a 30 round capacity but can't justify it when I have no other .22WMR firearms.
@aceontheline1
@aceontheline1 9 жыл бұрын
Just purchased a PMR and instead of shooting my $15.00 for 50 rounds ammo I dug out some ancient .22 WMR rounds that had to be around 20 years old. Shot 50-60 rounds with only one problem which was my fault. Basically I loaded the magazine incorrectly. As a side note, and I'll have to double check, but I could swear my rear sight WAS a drift adjustable sight. So, my testing was far from conclusive but it did give me confidence that there would be no major issues. Again, yes I know 60 rounds is hardly indicative of proving reliability but I was feeling cheap that particular day and very short on time.

Sorry Nutnfancy I like you a lot I think your a cool guy but i have been in the gun business a little over 19 years now as a sales prep and a fire arms instructor and by my experience Kel tec is one of the biggest piece of ''SHIT '' guns ever. it doesn't matter what model gun you buy from them I would say 7 out of 10 doesn't work poor poor inconsistency in performance and reliability. So folks It is better if you take the time and save your money and buy some thing else or the Ruger SR 22 it doesn't cost much even less than the PMR 30 and the '' performance'' is out of this world for a pistol that shoots .22 long rifle must pistols that shoots this round are moody and it can take some time to find the right round to feed well in you .22lr pistol but not the Ruger SR 22 it eats every thing no inconsistency to feed and its very reliable .

Ian, I own a slew of guns...I think that you are wrong! I love my pmr30...fast, light and very reliable! Also, side bar, you need to go back to 4th grade english. Hahahaha...."..poor poor inconsistency..." actually means that the inconsistency was so poor that it was good. Double negative my man. Therefore a very consistent firearm. Or, maybe poor poor means good inconsistency...You confuse me Just a side bar.

the 5.7 was designed to penetrate body armor at 100+ yards; a bit overkill for your standard self defense situation. It's a military round, propietary to FN, and extremely expensive. And the Five-Seven doesn't hold 30 rounds. I'd take the Kel Tec any day, unless you're buying the ammo (and holding the extra clips.)

"they should ship it out right" is exactly why I'll bypass Kel-Tec in the future. Bought a PF9, had issues, finally had to go to the factory for them to keep it an hour and put in all the upgrades. Works great now, but I've seen too many others having this same issue. Buy a weapon, have issues, send to Kel-Tec, get it back fixed. Might have good customer service, but a buyer shouldn't have to use it right out of the box. Glad your's is working for ya. IMHO

Watched and enjoyed.. Biggest complaint I have about the PMR-30 is how hard it is to find one! I worked at a gun shop, we received 30 of them one day, they were all taken within less than one hour. Kel-tec is a good company from what I have seen and from what I have shot, biggest downside is they don't put their guns out in high enough numbers. If I ever find a PMR-30, I'll gladly pick one up for fun shooting and for my get home bag.

A PMR30 chambered in 5.7 would totally be awesome. The biggest problem with the 5.7 pistol is also the price itself too. With the reliability of a center fire and the value, size, and weight of a Keltec... It would be killer.

I'm going to add my 2 cents on comparing the Kel-Tec and Five seveN. If we look at the dimensions of .22 WMR as a metric round it would be 5.7 x 24 as opposed to 5.7 x 28. In inch caliber 5.7 is .224 inches which low and behold the .22 WMR is also .224 inches. Technically you could load the 5.7 projectile into the .22 WMR casing and fire it but feeding reliability would most likely be limited to bolt action rifles. The biggest physical advantages that the 5.7 x 28 cartridge has are the following: it is centerfire, it is bottlenecked, and it is longer. These 3 physical advantages mean that it will feed and fire more reliably and hold more powder. More powder means more explosive potential thus more speed. However, until you begin using 5.7 loads hotter than the .22 WMR cartridge is capable of, you really only have the better feeding of the bottlenecked rimless cartridge and the reliability of centerfire priming. What I am getting at with all this is that with great .22 WMR ammo you could potentially have a more effective and reliable round than a cheaply made low power 5.7 round. That's my cartridge comparison. So this brings us to the safe chamber pressures that the individual weapon can accomodate being a key factor as well as barrel length to achieve higher muzzle velocity. Since the FN and the Kel-Tec are almost the only semi-auto handguns available using these 2 cartridges, I don't think that a comparison of the 2 is that far-fetched. My Marlin 925M bolt action rifle chambered in .22 WMR has proven to me that the cartridge can be extremely accurate (I use it to shoot expended .22 WMR brass that I stick in the target at 75 yards.) So thank you Nutnfancy for the review and comparison. It seems to me Kel-Tec has made a decent pistol that still has room for improvement. The Five-seveN performs better and is the better pistol. Now if only my Ruger MkIII competition target model were chambered in .22 WMR and used a 30-rd clip...that would be a dream lol.

James yeager has an excellent point regarding this. thats true that 22lr causes the most deaths BUT as Yeager says A round for self defence is to stop the attack then and there at that moment, not to kill them a weak from now. 22 just doesnt have that stopping power to really stop the threat at that moment. Granted putting so many rounds down range with the 30rnd mags is a pro, he makes a good point

+brent56and1 I got a PLR-16 from them that wasn't strong enough to chamber a new round out of the box. But I sent it in and after about a month I got it back and it seems to be flawless now.

I watch TN outdoors all the time. He does a great job. Bullet velocity makes a MASSIVE difference in penetration, but sometimes it is counter intuitive. The 5.56 is a good example of high velocity meaning LESS penetration because of fragmentation. There is a fragmentation threshold for every bullet out there. In looking more closely, the 5.7 might not reach that threshold. 1700fps is a medium speed, so I can see how it might penetrate more than a .45. The .45 FMJ just keeps going VS Drywall.

Pmr 30 is not the first 22 mag with thirty rounds. First attempt was called a Grendel before kel tec was kel tec. Was made from 90-94. Weapons ban ended it. These to had problems. I'm glad this pistol was not given up on totally. Some people just don't like change as in new and innovative. With that said your going to have some issues.

Looks like an awesome pistol. The 22 Magnum RF is an interesting cartridge too. Too bad 22mag is as expensive as it is, but not really that bad for pistol ammo. I think this pistol would rock shooting at rotating metal plates.

A few corrections to video: SS190 AP round is LEGAL in most US states. You can buy it on gun broker. Elite makes several rounds that are civilian legal that will defeat a IIIA vest. FN SS192, 195, and 198 will defeat almost all level II and most level IIIA vests. I have tested all of this, on video. See my channel for videos.

The reason I prefer my PS90 over an AR-15 is weight, size, recoil, simplicity and reliability. I have never had my PS90 fail - ever. I also have radio-ulnar synostosis so changing mags in a PS90 is a lot easier. The 50 round mags are nice, too.

That's actually part of the design of the pistol the shifting barrel is a mechanism in the semi auto system of the PMR. That is supposed to be part of what makes it so revolutionary.

Gunbroker has them; keep in mind, because they are a hot commodity, you will be paying a considerable mark up on one. Roughly in the neighborhood of $500-$700 depending on the seller.

Perfect timing on this review. My girlfriend and I are geological students. As a result We spend a lot of time out of doors. She wants a gun she can carry in the field to ward of critters. This may be a good option for her. If any of you guys hike a good bit and carry while doing so please let me know what you pack. Just so I have options on what to look at.

I have researched and wanted this gun for a while, but I work as a range safety officer, and I've seen one of these BLOW UP. Not a hot load, CCI standard .22 Mag, a woman was firing it, one her first times shooting, and as a new round cycled it fired without a trigger pull and shattered the chamber. Hopefully THAT'S fixed too.
