What I'm referring to here is how both of them make the song sound distinct to their own styles. Kelly added power vocals and some of her own touch to make it sound like a big song. While Billie, she is well-known for singing mellow, and just quiet whispery vocals. But still, it sounds amazing to me.

Both Billie and Kelly's versions were equally amazing for me. When I listened to Billie's, as it was her song, it gave me that sober feeling, that loneliness a person can go through a heartbreak. This version hits differently. I'm 31 now, and Billie's is amazing and gives me nostalgia. It reminds me of some of the fleeting toxic relationships I had as a teenager. Kelly's version though is like ending an abusive longterm relationship, where there's actual stakes involved. It speaks more of trauma. Although Billie wrote it Kelly's hits way deeper.

Either way this version of the song still just sounded like the end of a long term relationship and billie's sounded like the end of a short term. I love both versions of this song so much. Billie’s sounds like having the illusion shattered the first time, a ‘fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me’ vibe. Kelly’s has a deep, undercurrent of rage and utter disappointment at how much hurt and betrayal someone can inflict on someone they claim to love/loved. I live and breath for both these icons.

I love both Billie and Kelly's versions but this one just hits differently. Reading the comments, I understood why. Both singers emote so well and being older, Kelly's emotions resonate with me. The comments in here are spot on. Billie's is about loneliness and heartbreak while Kelly's is angrier and speaks more to a different type of trauma. At least that's how I see it.

It's so devastating that Kelly divorced. As her parents' divorce had made her suffer so much as a kid, I kinda always hoped that her marriage would be happy. I will never forget the pain in her voice and how she was crying while singing "Piece by piece". And now when I'm listening to this cover, it actually breaks my heart. Kelly, please be happy! You're kinda my soulmate, and as a kid to divorced parents, I feel you and I hear you. Your "Because of you" is my broken childhood's anthem. Be happy ♥♥♥
