Dance music was very niche in the US in the 90s and moderately successful in the 80s. It was biggest in the 70s until disco died at the end of the decade. Even though House and Techno music were created in the 1980s by Black people in Chicago and Detroit, respectively, they never went mainstream in the US but became huge in Western Europe in the late 80s and in Japan and Australia in the 90s. It took until Skrillex in 2010 for the US mainstream to start paying attention to electronic music! Around the same time the US stopped paying attention to rock music, with hard rock and metal completely falling off in popularity since TV networks like MTV no longer introduced audiences to bands. Since the mid 2010s it's just pop, generic R&B, generic Hip-Hop and generic EDM that reigns supreme. Since most popular hard rock bands were from the US, it's decline at home led to a decline in popularity globally. However, EDM because of its less reliance on language is much more diversified globally and has a huge audience with their own ecosystem of festivals and clubs with big crowds.

To this date, I have never seen a KZbin Channel tackle a Kelly Rowland story so intricately detailed, researched backed, and NOT based in the idol worship of Beyonce. Bravo! and Thank you! I often wonder if something traumatic happened to her during her "forgotten dance era". Maybe her abusive relationship was precisely during this time even though it feels like It might have happened when she was much younger. I only say this because she's said at one point dance music was a "beautiful mistake". The collaboration with Amorphous and Crazy are the closest she's returned to the sound. It's unfortunate because a lot of critics agree that she really shines as a dance diva. Now that Beyonce has released pure dance/house music, the comparisons will surely persist if she picks up the dance sound again.

I'm so glad you made this video! I followed Kelly (along with Amerie and Kelis) career overseas despite being American. Like I bought all the editions of Ms Kelly 😭. She got me into dance music, I really hoped she did a full on dance album, but I'm grateful we got Here I Am and loved that she went back to R&B with Talk a Good Game. She's truly a musical chameleon and deserves the world. I would also like to add, Destiny's child has been making Dance music since their debut album. They recorded vocals of their songs on house beats. Kelly was destined for dance music, just listen to destiny's child Illusions remix. I would love to see you do a deep dive about Dawn Richard and her independent artist journey.

@WonderKingE Жыл бұрын
@@musiclover-cn7tb No it's ingrained in American culture. As someone who loves girl groups and listens to kpop because of that, USA always has the problem of finding the lead singer in the group as opposed to loving the group as a whole. Comparing vs appreciating everyone for what they bring. If we did that more Kelly would be equally as successful as Beyonce. But nope.

I actually bought Kelly’s debut LP “Simply Deep” from K-Mart when it was released 😅 It was definitely an album of the times…Alt Pop & R & B sonically but was overall a decent first effort. Idk why the narrative Kelly doesn’t get shine is a thing…she always got exclusive looks outside of DC starting with the “Separated Remix” duet with Avant in 2000….to getting features with Nelly & Trina early on in her solo career. It’s a really weird brush the industry & fans try to paint her with…she is great in her own lane.

Well said!! Everyone forgets about her official 1st work as a soloist with Avant. Plus her sales figures haven't been updated in decades for the US. It really is a shame. As a FOUNDING member of one of the best selling girl groups of all time plus her awesome career as a soloist especially considering the many obstacles she's faced, I'd say she's done quite well for herself. And let's not forget her foray into tv/film. She's so multifaceted.

Kelly’s dance hits were huge here in Australia and I remember how disappointed I was when the redux/ re-issue of Ms. Kelly shied away from these hits & mixes (for a while there I collected the maxi-singles & CD remixes they were so good). And I’ve loved her work both before & after this era, but there was something so accomplished & unique about the sounds, beats & collabs she was putting out. Ms. Kelly could easily have been as big as Madonna’s Confessions on a Dance Floor if the whole record had gone dance/pop at the very least internationally. I think the mash up of styles didn’t help gain it universal traction and the momentum was lost. Thanks for this deep dive, Ms. Rowland deserves all the flowers. 💐

@@chocolatethunder192 Summer Walker and SZA in particular are EATING the girls up in streams and units within RnB and even with the white pop girls with SZA. It's also about curving your lane and building a strong fan base. It's not Kehlani or Jhené Aiko and definitely not Mariah The Scientist who are running the game in RnB today as people make it out to be. The light skinned girls are all flopping and have no longevity even with the push but when you look at the actual numbers, streams, units, chart positions and awards. It's a lot smoke and mirrors especially with the rap girlies tbh. Saweetie sold 2k of her last EP, Latto is basically a one hit wonder as of now, Ice Spice is all social media hype and Coi Lerai and Bia are nowhere to be found on the charts either 🤷🏾♂️. I’m so happy to see Kelly get her flowers and shine. During this era I was just starting high school and I really loved Kelly. She was also my favorite Destiny’s child member. While the talent is there definitely colorism and a lack of promotion got in the way of her career blowing up. During this era everything was becoming digital 2010’s +. I just want to say Kelly can truly do anything any lane she steps in she is that GIRL! Also during 2008-2010 the Europe and other global sounds were in! I remember discovering new music on DatPiff, Other music blogs. David Guetta was in his BAG. Lastly, Kelly’s last 2 albums “Talk a Good Game” and “Here I Am” are one of the best work of art albums I’ve heard in early 2010’s from a female artist. Like the way she captivated production she ate on Talk a Good Game. I miss her house/ EDM era we just need Miss Kelly back ♥️👏🏾👏🏾

Thanks for doing this video I had no idea Kelly did EuroPop/Dance music outside of Motivation. What's messed up is all of these women are talented but the media stays pitting them against each other or using colorism to put Bey on a pedastal. Like there is room for Kelly, Michelle, LaToya and all the other girls. That's why I love what Cardi B is doing on the Rap side doing songs with other female rappers because whether R&B, Pop, or Hip Hop the girls have to stick together. Some of the best tracks that have come out the past few years have been women doing songs with other women.
