I’m so glad you chose to recognize Danessa Myricks. What she is doing with her brand means a lot to the black community. We are so tired of people saying we only support black businesses because they’re black and not competitive. It’s funny to me how the perception of dupes has changed too. Like, back in the late 2010s, people were really hostile to dupe eyeshadow palettes (like Alter Ego - and the brand that predated them, Bad Habit). I loved Bad Habit, but I remember people online refusing to review the palettes/implying that the eyeshadow dupes were morally wrong to buy. It’s interesting - I don’t know if it means anything, but the shift is definitely there. Love the video, Kelly ❤

Kelly, I think there is a huge gap between you and me and our Wants and needs within the beauty space. You are someone who has a large makeup collection, and your job is to comment about New and noteworthy things. I respect the work you do. I imagine that gives you some extra pressure to find new, very different things to report about. As a beauty consumer who does not make much money, I think we are in a golden Renaissance of makeup that is accessible, affordable, and comes in many different formulas for different skin needs. I like this "boring "place because it means that people are able to find things that they want and without breaking the bank. From my side of things, there is a cavernous gap between the videos I watch about beauty products and what I actually purchase, mostly because of price, and sometimes I'm concerned about not having tons of space for a big makeup collection. I'm in my 50s, and I have come to accept two important things when it comes to beauty products. First, there really isn't anything new in beauty, especially with makeup. If you wait long enough, the stuff that is outdated today will become trendy again, though the formula may be a little better. Sometimes, when there aren't a lot of new things coming out, it may seem like nothing is happening. Yet I'm sure companies are working on new products that they will launch when they think the time is right. That has been my experience since I started wearing makeup in 1983. Second, I think it's important to acknowledge that there are some of us who are probably never going to buy a $50 lipstick or $75 foundation or moisturizer. Some of that is because we can't, and some of it is because even if we could, we won't. Most influencers look to luxury brands for innovation, and those brands tend to get featured more online. I don't really see those things as relevant to me, and I don't really think I would change my buying habits if I suddenly became very wealthy. So while you feel bored right now, I feel blessed to have bountiful options with lots of formulas and shades to try that are in my price range. The quality of drugstore brands has really leveled up since I started using drugstore make up back in the 80s. It is a totally different ballgame, and for once, I feel like my team is winning. :-)

I remember my mom, when I was very young telling me: all the makeup products from the very expensive ones to the cheap ones, comes from the same factory. 🏭 I remember that I stared to pay attention on the packaging, the colors, and realized she was right, and I am talking maybe 20/25 years ago, i think things changed a bit, but still to this day it makes sense!
@nin.-26447 ай бұрын
The same can be said about clothes! However, factories can, and often do, adapt their formula and quality to the client's wishes and standards. A factory can produce both mid-market and luxury products. This depends on ingredients, quantities, formula, etc. With cosmetics and perfume, you often pay a premium for the use of natural ingredients instead of synthetic ones. So while they might come from the same factory, it does not necessarily mean that a product at a more modest price point is just as good as one at a higher one.

It makes sense that beauty content creators would get bored with the dupification, and reasonably, it is nice to see variety, but I personally feel it is important to make better quality products affordable to the average consumer. Imo, that's top priority But you also touched on an issue - there are just so many beauty brands. Y'know we sit here and watch beauty content creators, then go buy products based on reviews that we trust. This past year I have no idea how much money I flushed down the drain on products, and I am *not* a content creator nor someone who enjoys having 5+ different products of everything, so I'm glad to see the dupification bc I want to have my basics, know they're good quality, and be done. I'm not gonna sit in front of my mirror everyday and get excited over packaging Having said that, of course the pendulum will swing in another direction and people will come out with things that are more individualized, that look different because there will always be people who feel the need to be and look and have things that are just different We're having products thrown at us constantly, and I'm over it. I'm over looking for the next new thing. I want something that works because I have a life to live that doesn't revolve around beauty or beauty content creating

as someone who often can’t get the higher end versions of products due to pricing and availability in the country i’m from, i’m forever grateful for dupes and brands launching similar products to each other. esp when i see brand x has released something similar to what brand y has, which i already might have, so i don’t have to buy what brand x came out with. hence, brands all releasing the same sorts of things increases accessibility of products, as well as even potentially discouraging consumer spending as if we have the elf clicky pens, for example, we don’t also need the nyx and/or colourpop ones.

A couple years ago I pumped the breaks on all the skincare Sephora was trying to sell and focused on paring it back to more simple things. Makeup followed suit. These days I have like 15 makeup items so if I’m buying, it’s gotta be pretty interesting for me. I did cave last year and bought an ambient lighting palette that is just absolutely wasted on me 😂. Milani's real dupe of Nars Orgasm was from a line of blush they don't make anymore (and it was the predecessor to Luminoso); it was a blush named Luminous and it was from their Minerals Blush with Brush line. I have noticed a lot of dupes literally look like and have similar names to a more expensive brand (like the Charlotte Tilbury vs ELF foundations) - making makeup shelves look so similar. I think they WANT people to notice it is a dupe so they try it or get confused and buy it anyway. Like, why does the component and applicator look so similar? Why are they using the same words in their product name and branding? I personally am not seeing a lot of innovation when I go out shopping for these bigger brands. The new makeup releases seem to be very repetitive, I prefer to shop my stash. I haven't purchased anything from DM yet but she does come out with some interesting products.

I like what you’re pointing out here. Usually, I just like the original the best and then I’m all set! What I can’t get enough of are what aim to be the lip plumping glosses. I can’t get enough. Not the Too Faced lip injection (yes to the pillow balm ones) & funny enough, not Polite Society. Alllll the others, my favesssssss. Cheers to DM’s brand🙌🏻 Thank for a great vid!

Kelly have you tried Korean cushion foundations? They're too good, I feel like K-beauty is so innovative and creative.

Kelly, will you do a video on the best eyeliners? I was so tempted try Urban Decay's gel liners but ive heard somewhere recently they suck. I bought an eyeliner from Neutrogena that I think is the best I've ever had. It is in a brown shade. I want a good black liner. Maybe I should just try more of Neutrogena's shades.

Thank you for voicing what we’re all thinking! Ps. I’m shocked more brands haven’t copied Patrick Ta’s blushes and bronzers.

I don’t mind dupes, especially if they’re good and if they’re duping something I wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise. I do like to see new innovative products as well. I have the same NYX butta bronzer in the same shade and I really enjoy it! They got it right 😊 the DM color looks so pretty on your eyes. Love the lip combo too! Have a great weekend! Hugs! 💖🌸

I kinda love it -- I am bored and have plenty of makeup and my wallet needs the break!

I also love Danessa Myricks line such a great brand and lady. I have bought quite a few products from her Yummy makeup line. I also love the LYS cosmetic line. Love the products, packaging and pricing. I do love a tubby lip gloss or balm. It’s convenient and not messy. Not quite sure how else you could possibly package a lip balm other than in a little tub which is messy and not very hygienic.

Good video topic. I don’t know if we could really argue that example: luminoso as a dupe of Nars, without some real inside information, it could have gone the other direction also with example: Nara duping Milani because they can charge more

The same with lipsticks😂😂I recently went back to Revlon, Maybelline, and L'Oreal

I would say that Milani's Baked Blush in Dolce Pink is more similar to the Nars Orgasm color. I had both at one point and decided I liked Milani's formula better.

I don’t necessarily mind the dupes too much. They make certain types of products accessible to the masses, where in this economy, many people can’t afford to pay $40 for a blush (looking at you, Dior). Plus, some of the dupes are as good or better than the original.

Yeah i love the dupe videos when things aren't trying to dupe each other necessarily, but finding a gem in the drug store that mimics a higher end or luxury product.

Those click-up lip glosses existed before Tarte's version for sure. I owned two Sephora collection ones back in like 2017, and I know people loved the Marc Jacobs one as well.

For research purposes, I’m interested to see the kinds of products that people would like to exist! Whether the product is delivered through a different mechanism, is in a different form entirely, or you have a completely new concept in mind! I’d also appreciate if your age range is listed (5-10, 11-16, 17-23, 24-29, 30-35, 36-41, 42-47, 48-53, 54-59, 60-65, 66-71, 72-77, 78-83, 84-89, 90-95, 96-101, etc.) so that I can have an understanding of what type of makeup different age groups prefer. Also, do you prefer white and gold luxury packaging or a dusty rose/old pink and gold luxury packaging? Which are you more likely to spend more on? This research is in regard to the effect of makeup on women and the altering of the perception of makeup/skincare over time. Thank you!

One of the big things that I think a lot of people don’t think about - is that a lot of brands use the same manufacturing facility. So if I go to my manufacturer and say hey I want to do a stick blush. They’re going to show me the packaging options they have. They might have 2 or 10. Let’s say they have just a couple. I’ll pick the packaging I like - bc unless you’re a super big brand, it’s expensive and time consuming to make your own 100% unique packaging. So I choose my packaging and create my colors and my item is made. A month later another brand does the same Thing. They choose the same packaging. Their factory goes here I have some different color options you can choose from for the blush and sends that brand a formula and color ALMOST the same as what they made for you. So now 2 brands are going to have almost identical products- and they literally don’t know until it’s too late. Also- most brand owners don’t have the time to go looking at all the other brands items to make sure they don’t use similar components or colors. Colors are usually seasonal and trending colors anyways. But yeah you see this happen a lot and it’s a good bit of the time not the brands fault. I’m sure sometimes they do it on purpose but not always

I absolutely LOVE Danessa Myricks, I ordered a haul from her the other day but all of the complexion products in fhe lightest shade were too dark :( I get I’m not her target market though. I highly rate her light work 5 palette.

Right?! And it's all so bring and repetitive at this point 😒🤦🏾♀️. I'm saving money, though, so that's a good thing 👍🏾😉
@marianne63737 ай бұрын
Big high end brands and some niche brands sometimes make a unique product still. Five minutes later drugstore brands are trying to copy it and overflow the market with their so called dupes. It’s like IKEA, but for make up.
@libbymorehouse44667 ай бұрын
I like the repetition but only because I’m trying to buy very little so there’s very little that stands out and tempts me

The dupe craze is honestly driving me crazy, like shopping now for makeup just isnt fun anymore when my favorite brands have just become only focused on dupes (elf, nyx,ect)
