Growing up in NM you learn that the arroyo can flash flood even when it is sunny outside if there is rain at higher elevations.
@DavidHall-d8q21 күн бұрын
I learned this as a kid ... dig a small trench on the high side of your tent and angle it down the sides leaving the low side open past the tent . Rain will gather in your trench and keep the tent dry . It doesn't have to be real big unless it's a downpour . But it will still help . PK

This was taught as Boy Scout practice, but was abandoned as contrary to LNT principles.
@MaxZomboni19 күн бұрын
@@donrobinson5540 If you fill in the trench before you leave, you are 100% LNT compliant. I think back in the day we did a lot better job with LNT. In the boy Scouts we couldn't even leave foot prints in out campsite. The Scout Master would inspect it before we could leave. Now people leave fire rings and everything else.

@@MaxZomboni Unless you're on bare grounds (and I guess specialists would say that no grounds are really bare), doing that will leave a trace.

@@tt-of4xv Leave No Trace is just what it says, leave no trace. Every thing should look exactly as it did when you arrived, and there should be no evidence you were ever there. That is all.

I got myself the Durston Xmid pro 1 because of you lol... Glad I did. But I understand your issues. I did break a pole on the Foothill trail and was in trouble with my previous tent. I fix this issue now with the Durston z-flick poles and I just use a monopod walking stick in my hand. That way I know, my tent is always safe!

that is exactly what the clay mud we have in northern ca does during rainy season. i hike with a flat head screwdriver to remove the mortar like mud or else you just cannot walk!

The flash floods here are no joke and the whether often turns on a dime. Glad you made out safely. Can't even tell you how many times I got stuck, or in sketchy situations out there back in my rave/desert party days. Beware the annoying little round cactus hiding out there.

I'm a fan of the Durston Xmid tents. I'd be worrying about tearing the bug net on the Zpacks tent as it seems to lie across the threshold when opened.

0:06 I like that company's website. "Winch and Recovery Services If your off-roading gets a little out of control, your vehicle can end up in some pretty tight spots. We can easily winch your vehicle out of nearly anywhere...". I think that's what happened. The truck driver's off-roading got a little out of control. 🤣

That is clay. When it gets wet, it acts like glue. Just don't ever drive in it, especially at night, you will be stuck until it dries. Anyways, it's Pinon Nut picking season. Absolutely must try. They come every seven years. But it must be roasted, if you eat it raw, you will get a sore throat.😊 NM cuisine is delicious!
