The neck knife is good but for defense your trekking poles are far better, longer reach, and a very sharp point. You don't hit with them, poke, aim for the eyes, use one as a distraction the other as the weapon. I have followed you up to your surgery and now going back to all your pre-hike videos. I will continue to follow you as you again head north, get well soon and good hiking.

Just a suggestion. Para cord tends to get snagged on tree bark and other things pretty easily. Dynaglide throw line works a lot better for stuff like hanging bear bags. Dynaglide is what a lot of arborists use for stuff in and around trees. I made the switch a few years ago and it made a big difference

Dyneema cord is excellent. And very lightweight.

Yeah...para cord is not a good option. Hanging a bear bag is tough enough at times...go with the Dynaglide or something comparable. Really. Will be following. Have been from the beginning.

I use the EZESO Glasses Case for my glasses on trail it works great, pretty light too. I’ve had issues with dry eye or just irritation on windy days and having glasses saved me! Have dropped it many times even on rocks and it hasn’t broken yet! Only cost me $8 on Amazon.

I have those same tevas. They are super comfy. I did an 8 mile moderate and relatively flat day hike in those on the AT. Only thing I’d say is to break them in well before having to wear them long term (if ever you have to). They blistered up my picky toes pretty badly from the friction where the outside of my pinky toes met the top end of the front strap material (hard to explain that). Happy hiking!

Hey Kelly! New gear looks great! I would pack your glasses, just in case you have an issue and can't get your contacts in. They really don't weight that much, even in a sturdy case, and as you said you need to see the AT! I bet if you dropped the emergency rain and cut the tags off your smartwool top and phone case lol you would stay at the same weight! Did you record this on your new phone? What did you end up getting for storage size? Video looked great, I can't wait to see your trail videos! Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well. -Grateful

An interesting lightweight hard-sided bottle that I will be carrying this year out of Amicalola is a 16 oz. (1 lb.) Peanut jar, which weighs 1-3/8 oz, holds 26 oz. liquid, has the same size toas a Nalgene, and stands up on its own. Might make a good pee bottle. Not too much capacity for drinking water, but the large mouth should make guzzling easier than a Smart Water bottle.

Keep the rain pants through the entire hike for cold and insects. Hiking in sandals can be good. Evan(2018) and Chilli Bin(2019) hiked the AT in sandals. Your electronics looks heavy. Bring your glasses in a hard case(this is the voice of a bad experience). Add a heatsheet emergency blanket to your gear. It is bigger, stronger, and quieter than mylar blankets. You may run into cold weather still. Good Luck, Rick

i just tried my coleman rainpants a couple of times for the cold and was astonished by the moisture build up within the first twenty minutes both times i tried them. dry conditions just lounging around. they almost seem worthless without good ventilation..... my sunglasses last WAY longer now after discovering cases or protective plush sleeves to avoid scuffs.

@@aaronfuentes5919 Condensation is always a problem for rain gear. That is why I prefer a good poncho. I've been spending my afternoons in Tyvek coveralls while spraying for ticks on my property. I have to take a break and turn them inside out every hour because of condensation. The rain pants can be a sanity saver when the biting bugs attack. Good Luck, Rick

I'm pretty sure I could sleep in a patch of poison ivy and not get the rash. Never had a reaction to it in my life and I'm in the woods if I'm not at home. The weather in the Smokies has been warm. Even up at Clingmans it's only been getting down to around 45. I've gotten hot while I've been out shooting this week. But, the poison ivy is out in force for sure.

Kelly, dont skimp on your vision....could be the difference between walking through poison ivy and going around it....get the plastic hard case from Walmart to keep em in and just keep it in the bottom of your pack. Better to have spare eyes then wish you had em later. Plz.

Hello, Kelly...Looks like you are ready for your trip. You'll probably make a lot of changes in the first 200 miles. The only thing I would highly, highly recommend is to take your glasses. My daughter wears contacts and there are days she can't. Also, knives are very important. Just go through all the things you do with them. Your hike will go great, but if you get into a survival situation, heaven forbid, your knife is your most important tool. Shelter, fire, food prep, etc. But I would consider 2 knives in case you lose one. Also, a great headlamp is a smart item. Anyway, have a great and successful trip. I, as well as a lot of people, will be following you.
