The Shenandoah National Park is one of our favorite! When our kids were young we camped all out in there and had such wonderful experiences! Time to get back soon! Great video! Keep on trucking Kelly! 🤙

I'm the owner of the grey cooler and makes me smile that all of you were so appreciative of the magic inside. Was putting 2 cases a day in that thing for a span of 3 weeks and couldn't resupply it fast enough at times. Don't know where the jerky came from and was curious if anyone tried it, but now I know my answer. All the best on the rest of your journey!

Hey 9 Lives.. Good comments about not letting the trail become a rat race and that you're out there to enjoy the trail. A thru-hiker has to be so careful not to let the mindset of off-trail life sabotage his trail experience. For example, we often bring onto the trail the notion that every minute has to produce something tangible or we're not being productive. We often take onto the trail a combative, controlling attitude that the trail has to adjust to us because in our "real life' we can have the power to control things around us. It's hard to devoid ourselves of these attitudes, but if we don't, we end up fighting the trail instead of flowing with it to gain what it has for us. The trail isn't out there for us; we're out there for the trail, and it will impose itself on us in any way it deems fit to mold and shape us. And if we carry the rat-race attitude of speed and control of everything onto the trail, the trek ceases to a journey of discovery and becomes just another day at work... where nobody understands that sometimes doing "nothing" is more important than doing "something." Or as Jesus put it: "Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place and rest a while:"

Hey Kelly! 100% fact, you have to listen to your body, and You gotta be kind to your mind. Balance is what we crave, and you are totally killing it in that department! So glad to hear you listening to the greatest band in all the land! I heard an amazing Loser on my hike yesterday, Such an under appreciated tune. Such epic views today. Just one after another after another. So that is not a pet I would expect to see on trail 😂 so cool though. So sad to leave SNP, but you will be back. Take the van, set it up and live your beat van life! Dude, there is no way I would have eaten that sketchy ass bag of trail meat floating in a dirty cooler lol. I love how you have and entire case of truly in tent! That is legit! I can’t wait for tomorrow’s vlog! Gonna be awesome! Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truck in’ and be well. #giveashit -Grateful

It always made me kinda sad that hikers plan their AT hikes sometimes years in advance then they feel like they have to blast through the trail and miss some of the beautiful views just to reach the end in time. I get that there's sorta a "deadline" to get to Katahdin, but in the end is it really worth it to push bodies beyond health and miss the experience of nature?
@mb6921003 жыл бұрын
GiraffeLoverJen.. The answer to your question is "no." But just to clarify, you don't really miss the experience of nature on a thru-hike....you just get to experience much less of it than you would like. I have found that the opportunity to experience nature is far greater on a section hike than on a thru-hike. Here's why: A thru-hike, of necessity, is a scheduling nightmare. From the moment you depart Springer all the way to Katahdin, you're constantly planning and monitoring your mileage and time so as to arrive at Katahdin before bad weather would delay your summit day. In some ways it's like a job where each day you have to plan out the next day's schedule. There's the constant nagging question in your mind..."I'm I going fast enough, what if I'm injured and have to take time off...will I make it in time?" There are days when you'd like to stop and just linger at some special spot, but you don't because you're afraid it would put you behind schedule. This is just the "necessary evil" of a thru-hike, and we all accept it because there is no greater experience of accomplishment than to touch that sign on Katahdin. But for the sheer, ultimate experience of nature, nothing is better than a section hike or any long-distance trail hike. There you have a start time and an end time, but, unlike an AT thru-hike, you're under no obligation to reach that end point at a designated time. If you have, for example, three weeks and you plan to go from A to B but you only make half way in the allotted time because you've been tarrying along the way to soak up all that nature has to offer , no problem, you just get off trail where you are. Yet for the pride of accomplishment, the physical challenge, the spiritual and character growth, the sense of self-worth, the discovery of who you really are, and the experience of a lifetime, perhaps no other effort in life can surpass a thru-hike. But if one's ultimate and primary goal is to immerse himself into the world of nature to draw from it all that he can without the burden of time constraints, then the other types of hiking, aside from thru-hiking, should be considered. No one type of hike is necessarily better than another. It's just that each has its own special benefits.

@S M What closes are the campgrounds. Officially Oct 15th. I know they say the 22nd (extended time) but I'm not sure if that includes the campground at Katahdin Stream. If you're close to summitting after the 15th you should call and ask. Correct on winter hiking but I think there's special rules about that, too. Permits required and you have to show you're able to do it. They don't have the ability to form SAR teams to rescue stranded hikers like Mt. Washington does. You're pretty much on your own in winter.
