I have followed this player's sporting career since High School, college and the NBA and I never had any idea she was going through these mental struggles, but her story of how she overcame this is amazing. Although she almost diagnosed and solved her own problems, she should have asked for help and calling random people on the phone was a great start. I'm truly happy for her, her family and her team that her life is now more balanced besides just sports.

@@back2sports i follow the W to a degree, and I was surprised to notice that Kelsey had accolades galore and also the highest scoring total in NCAAW (25 ppg), but her first few seasons the Stars/Aces were good at 9 PPG, but not as high as was expected from the scoringest college female (from a D1 School too) and #1 WNBA selection. I wondered, at the time, if Kelsey had stumbled in transition from college to the pros because of personal issues - it is clear now she had things going on in her psyche that chipped away at her. Her last two seasons have been 15 and 20 PPG, darn fine numbers (that's like scoring 19-24 ppg the NBA) so Kelsey has found herself and also her groove in a way she couldnt as a #1 pick in her first three seasons.

You are mentally strong Kelsey. My own mental health has sucked for most of my 65 years, and I have no one who can help with it. I had the most amazing shrink from '97 to '03 when she moved about 6 states away. I was devastated and my self harm got even worse. My dad died 6 days before my 37th birthday, and it took me to the darkest place in my life.....I thought. The following year, my doctor sent me to a shrink who was mainly to prescribe meds for depression but meds didn't help. She worked like crazy to understand how I could come in wearing a smile while telling her things that were awful. Thankfully she was good at reading body language and she picked up things on my that I wasn't aware of, like wrenching a plastic pop bottle in my hands. She had me start writing things down, and in a period of a month she realized how f*cked up I was. I could write down things that I didn't talk about. At home with my husband and kids, my smile was genuine, but so was my anger and I didn't like that but I couldn't cross that bridge. It wasn't until '98 that my employer found out I was seeing a shrink, and it wasn't a good thing. I had been hammered at work (I worked 18 years for eye surgeons, and my final 8 years were super stressful) so one day when the pressure was getting to me, I asked for the next day off. I was told no, so I made the mistake of calling my shrink about it. It wasn't 10 minutes before my supervisor stomped into my office while I was with a patient, slapped a piece of paper on my desk and asked "what's this"?? I looked at what it said and my shrink told her that I was to be off work for 6 weeks beginning the next day. Because I was with a patient, all I could do was say "I don't know, I only wanted a single day off. So now that they knew I was seeing a shrink, my life became hell. Long story short, in '99, I quit my job after I had sliced my forearm open wide and just sobbed at my sink as I watched the blood go down the drain. My husband got home and found me..I ended up getting stitched up and spent 15 hours in a shrink hospital terrified out of my mind. Several things had taken place with my job, and it wasn't good, so I just quit. I've been on disability since then, I still live with several psych. issues, but it's slowly gotten back to where I was before my dad died. My family doesn't even know how bad things had gotten and I wasn't going to tell them. I don't like family get togethers, I would rather stay home, but that would make things worse. I hope you are in a better place than you were when you posted this. I had another doctor tell my employer that they were making my high pressure job impossible because any time one of the guys had to fill in for me, they hated it because of how things went on with my coworkers. Sorry about this book, but don't let people rule my life anymore unless I have to say something. Stay strong, don't let anyone run you over. They have no idea what goes on in your head.
@JazminKnight-kb5fx3 ай бұрын
If your family don't understand you and have high expectations...fuck it! Let them be! And don't fall in their guilt trick! It took my whole life of agony to figure it out! I'm also over 60 years and on disability for mainly what "family" have done to me.....

As a former “hoopaholic” her story is not all that typical but not unheard of. IMO this is mostly in part due to the amount of time and effort (she even acknowledges it) put in to be the best you can be in a particular athletic sport…. And this is where some go off track, not having a base view of life and involvement in other aspects of life. One always needs other outlets to keep a perspective and not become consumed with THE SPORT. One always must keep in mind… one can’t play the sport for ever. There will come a time you have to retire. Playing down was never in my plan… once I saw I was not at the top anymore in games… I knew… then there were the comments signaling it’s coming….. as we were near death in the locker room after a great comeback win… the other team complained about being beat by a bunch of “old guys” who shot the lights out…. We laughed but knew it was near the end. Game over… life goes on….

It is common for elite athletes to fall into an abyss of loneliness while growing up due to their obsession with improving and being the best. That is why it is so important to ensure kids have time to learn social skills while they are young so they can make friends and do other things away from their obsession, this allows them an outlet to express their emotions and frustration, or just someone to listen to them, to hug them, to tell them they have their back, all those things that only close friends that have build trust over the years would understand.

Every athlete in whatever sport needs to see this. If a player has a passion for a sport, they absolutely need a support structure. But they need to be rooted in the realization that one small injury can bring it all down. That they need to have a goal for their lives other than sports. God can provide all answers if you just listen.
