The cool thing about traditional painting is that even if you don't do educational content, just watching someone paint can help others see what's going on and they pick up a thing or two just by observing alone. So no need to explain anything, just record yourself painting and for those that want to learn will just observe how you do your craft and they'll learn a thing or two in the process.

i really love the interviews!!! I feel like what I usually see is interviews of already "successful" artists & illustrators - it's so valuable to see advice given to those who AREN'T quite there yet that we (I) can follow~

Thank you Hannah, I'm glad you're enjoying!! I feel like a lot of us are struggling with the same things and hearing from people in the in-between stages is often more useful than interviewing a pro!

Definitely feels more like a creative community now rather than competition. It’s great! We all have something to contribute and share creatively although there are levels to it. Can all be appreciated

Two things: I like that (unlike a lot of art advice or productivity types) the things you talk about are the things *you * are actually doing. So many “how to make money doing art” gurus out there aren’t even necessarily making art; they selling people the advice. Second, I like that we actually get to see it in practice with someone who is probably starting out like most of your subscribers. Anyway, I’ve been trying since the early 2000s to crack this nut and I think your advice and videos are really helping. I Edit: literally the first ad that played was one of the guru-types 😅

The section on "growing an audience without educational content" is exactly what I needed to hear as a future content creator (not ready to start posting yet). I have a greater interest in showing my journey and development as an artist cause I'm not nor can I picture myself being comfortable with teaching anything--especially since I consider myself an amateur. At most, I see myself dropping some tips and tricks at times. It was difficult for me to come to this conclusion cause I thought I should be more educational but this helped reassure my initial plans :)

I love videos like this as a small aspiring artist! It really helps to see what other artists are going through, and all the questions they constantly ask their selves (like Scott). Makes me feel a little less crazy, because I feel like I'm constantly strategizing, and going down rabbit holes on how to do more, and market better. But again, I'm reminded patience, and the long game. Healthy growth takes time, sometimes it feel like it's never going to happen, but it's important not to focus on that too much and have fun with what you create! 😊

thank you - both of you for putting this talk out there :) its very nice to see people really talk about art and the path of it, there are a lot of things other than art making and I a glad to hear your discussion about it :) and thank you for the opportunity for us to be in a future art talk with you, this is a very valuable thing that you offer :) btw you didnt mention Commissions to Scott - which can also be a good path for income for him - maybe a clothing brands might want a painting with his work, or maybe individual people want a painting of them as well.

Thanks for what you do. Our art is very different but your videos have been very informative and theyre like the only 'tips for professional artists' type videos I will watch. So many are just yuck, or annoying, but I find you to be straightforward, honest, and like not a grifter, which shouldn't be so rare. As I've been trying to change my habits and figure out the business side of making art, your channel has been a resource and I appreciate it. Keep up the good work and maybe one day Ill be able to pay it back or at least pay it forward.

I don't know about advising an Etsy shop at this stage. I've been an etsy seller for over 7 years and it's changed drastically. I would recommend he have his own website and promote it through his youtube channel and whatever other socials. I love this interview format and I signed up for that form as well. I'm an artist with a very small social following and its been that way for years. Nice to see smaller accounts get noticed.

I haven't watched Scott much, but me with a few others very briefly talked once with him on Kelsey's discord and I've been procrastinating on getting into his videos ever since. I don't really watch streams myself, but I like the format Scott has, I really enjoyed the last video with the explanation of the big painting from taking photos through making a small version first, then the final piece.

I love this format :D I'm still not sure how I eventually want to turn what I love doing into a way to earn money so I can spend more time on it, but I really love how open you are about the business side of content creation and how approachable you are about that topic. It makes the whole process seem more doable and approachable as well, and less intimidating.

Very interesting conversation - thanks for that! My tipp for Scott would be to change your thumbnails, as you are giving away the most interesting part by showing your painting in every thumbnail. I feel like I dont need to click anymore as I already saw it. Try experimenting with blurring it etc when you title it "the best thing I ever made".

22:22 I literally just started typing "ask independent makers on Etsy, or people advertising their fashion on TikTok and YT." Lol. Definitely search independent fashion or fashion designers on socials (idk fashion social media, so if anyone else knows a tag they use to find indepent fashion designers, especially that make dresses, please add)

How do I have that work life balance to do art? I work in home health and I'm at work all day with almost 50 hrs a week some week. I can't just say no to my job when another staff gets sick and staffing is tight. I haven't posted and marketed my stuff in months because of it.

a more traditional style isn't bad at all (I consider my own style. a lot more traditional), it's just associated with an older time and the current trends lean a lot more modern and contemporary. You can find my conversation with Allison here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4LahKOnjbClj9E
