No... no no... you guys missed the whole point about T-Rex... those teeth were *designed* as the perfect seed strainer for melons! T-Rex slurps the melons, and the seeds, unable to move through the teeth, fall there on the ground ready for planting. The T-Rex then stomps around doing the Macarena, driving the seeds into the soil and then then poops, thus fertilizing the next melon patch. T-Rex and melonry had a magically symbiotic vegan relationship just 6000 years ago!

Excellent points, that prey animals are also evolved to escape predators, so creationists must deal with those implications. Not just placement of eyes on rabbits, but super fast speed and camouflage also help the rabbits escape from predators.. Did rabbits look like flat faced orange gophers before the curse? I have also wondered the same thing about women before the Curse,, or more specifically Eve. She was cursed by the Deity with pain of childbirth. So what did she look like before the curse? Hips twice as wide? Four-legged? A marsupial?
@Zaprozhan7 жыл бұрын
Well, God paraded all the animals before Adam to choose a "helper" before creating Eve.

Wana drive a creationist crazy? Just suggest that Eve was created because Adam refused to have sex with a velociraptor. Oh, goodness, you'd think, you set fire to a kindergarten.

+Marilyn Newman I always figured the reason God complains about bestiality in later parts of the Bible was less of a 'raping animals is wrong' and more of a 'oh, *now* you're okay with fucking a sheep. When it was *me* offering the sheep to mankind, it wasn't good enough.'
@jamesdownard15107 жыл бұрын
part of it was the natural "farmhands will be farmhands" situation that has always been a niche of human nature, and to be fair, their various religious competition in Bronze & Iron ages did have traditions of animal worship & sacrifice. Then there were those Egyptians and their "wait for the Pharoah to do his sacred masturbation in the sanctum" shtich ... good thing Hebrews never ran into Mesoamerican bloodletting rituals, would have driven them even nutsier ... but then we already know how status conscious conquistadors reacted to the blood stained Aztec pyramids.

Your bookstore should be able to order it for you. It is available at Amazon also, "Evolution Slam Dunk." I have a backgrounjd in history (BA from EWU here in WA), spent decades working at inventory stuff, but an interest in science and dinosaurs especially slipped me into the whole creation/evolution thing. I tell some of that bio side in the various #TIP postings at www.tortucan.wordpress.com. The "Troubles in Paradise" project emerged seeing how seemingly bright people like Phillip Johnson (got into Harvard when he was 16) or Richard Milton (Mensa guy who'se functionally a non-religious youth earth antievolutionist, which I wouldn't have thought possible before I began to delve into this) managed to be antievolutionist, given all the data knocking around. Clue: they weren't paying attention to all the data, not even close, and gradually the "source methods" approach to the problem illuminated what was going on in a way the consensus philosophy down approach(favored by the NCSE for instance) didn't hit on properly. Along the way, armed with better tools (gigabyte flash drives to save copies) and a giant improvement in how much of the primary sources are available open access (a big concern given my limited retiree budget) made it possible to hunt down, evaluate and track virtually the whole range of antievolutionist source usage. It's not a pretty picture. Nobody else had thought to do this, even with the new tools, and I've already uncovered some rather interesting things, such as how small the core "fact claimants" are in antievolutionism: around 3 dozen people currently, 2/3 YECers, the remaining ID advocates. Everybody else (by the thousands in my catalog so far) simply copies what they've read or heard secondarily trickling out from that small core. So it's been a journey on my part, ultimately realizing that it is at the source level that antievolutionism really disintegrates, and is most dangerous in their political impact, trying in so many ways to undermine or ignore the relevance of the data stream, as well as marginalizing or demonizing those who actually do the work as merely materialist dogmatists (an absurd ad hominem for the many religious scientists).

The con-man's mask is slipping.
@jamesdownard15107 жыл бұрын
Most antievolutionists are not con-men, they sincerely believe what they say as true. The method whereby they do that reveals what's going on inside their heads, chiefly an ability to treat a secondary sources as if it were a primary (if you can do that, you can believe almost anything, and people do). So the religious content of the believer is just the veneer, other groups have identical methodology but different content. Recognizing that cross-content continuity let's us stand back a few steps from the cliche of religion vs science (yes it is that, a lot), to see the methods and cognitive systems that are in play at the deeper level.

The more I watch these videos the more grateful I am for my 10th grade biology teacher. He was a religious man but he made sure to educate us on the science of evolution. He did address God but not to tell us that evolution was wrong but to say you can have faith and stand by the science. He never preached, never told us God did (or didn't exist) just stressed that it is possible to agree with evolution and believe in God. And its a view I still hold. God and the Bible have their place but the science class room isn't it.

Ephesians 6:5 Heck DNA shows humans went down to a bottleneck 70,000 years ago, proposing that the human population was reduced to perhaps 10,000-30,000 So you can imagine what it's like for the poor cheetah going to 7 individuals, 10,000 years ago, You graph the skin from any cheetah to any other cheetah with no rejection. The buffalo went down to like 700 & have problems with having babies, the same for sea lions, 500 & same problem. So 2 or 7 is just ridiculous 4000 years ago.

Wait! I did not know that it was a thing with creationists to claim that before “the fall” bunnies had eyes in front instead of on the sides of their faces. Does that go for all prey animals? Did horses, antelope, deer, and all those small critters that are prey have that? What about long pointy teeth for the predators, that would actually break if they were used on like coconuts? What about the problem of cats, all of which are obligate carnivores because they cannot make taurine, which is never found in plants, and will die of heart failure without it. Or am I just being silly?
@erictaylor54627 жыл бұрын
Imagine you are on the jury in a capital murder case. The evidence supporting the guilt of the accuse is as follows. A witness states he heard a single gunshot from the next room. The accused stood over the victim holding a smoking gun next to a broken window. The victim was killed by a single gunshot wound through the heart. The accused had gun shot residue on his hands and clothes and is covered in the victim's blood. Is the accused guilty? Here is a bit more evidence to help with the case. The accused states that the victim was shot by a sniper shooting from the next room. He fired his gun through the window in the hope of hitting the sniper. The roof top was examined but no evidence of a sniper was found. Is the accused guilty of murder AND lying? Wait there is one more bit of evidence. A bullet was recovered from the victim's body. The bullet came from a long range rifle, NOT a handgun like the one held by the accused. In this case there are several bits of evidence supporting the idea that the accused is guilty, vs just one piece of evidence that he is not guilty, yet that one piece is more powerful than all the other evidence. It proves beyond doubt that the accused is not guilty. If the jury never hears about that one piece of evidence, they will surly convict. If the prosecute withholds it and presets only the other evidence the prosecutor can get a false conviction without ever saying anything that is untrue. Nevertheless he will STILL have lied. Young Earth creationists must withhold evidence to make their claims. Evidence that proves beyond doubt that the Earth is very much older than they claim.

that's interesting. I would like to read it in the future. My backlog is too large right now. However, I have, I believe I have heard someone, likely an atheist, say that there is no difference between macroevolution and microevolution. that those are just words made up by creationists to muddy the water. is this possibly true?

Outstanding and thanks for the references from multiple sources! When they talk about not understanding the data the voice inflection indicates that since it is not from the Bible or an unction of the Holy Ghost, it must therefore be incomprehensible for all true believing Christians. The tired old drivel that if it is not in the bible it doesn't need to be researched is so tedious!

What is a secondary source?
@Paulogia7 жыл бұрын
It's someone reporting ABOUT a scientific paper (like a news outlet or blog), but not the paper itself. Second-hand knowledge instead of first hand. If you talk about something you learn from a secondary source, you're a third-hand source. Each step is watered down.
@wearemikej7 жыл бұрын
Is that why we cite our sources when arguing with creationists or even writing a college paper?
@danielandemilyfreeman5767 жыл бұрын
Primary source would be a published scientific paper for example. Secondary source would be someone discussing and or referencing that paper.
@jamesdownard3607 жыл бұрын
great point, the primary data data is the object of interest, to the extent that people rely on secondary coverage (especially if they forget that's what they're doing) they get into trouble. That was basic scholarly methods practice I learned fully in my historiography studies in college (historiography being the study of historians and their processes over time).
@jamesdownard3607 жыл бұрын
there's levels here, the AiG posting becomes the primary source if that is the topic, the sources they cite consisted of secondary ones exclusively. Provided you keep the level straight, the issue is how much of the data stream is getting bumped into. AiG does not play that game well.

I grew up in churches that belong to a group known as the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches (GARBC) - which grew out of the Northern Baptist Convention (eventually, there was a whole bunch of political and theological disputes involved). I didn't really know much about the Southern Baptists, other than fellow Northern Baptists tended to look down on them (and ironically, almost all of the images I ever saw of Southern Baptists were of Black Americans - you know, the standard black church scene). I didn't find out until about 5 years ago that the split was actually over slavery - the Northern Convention was pro-abolitionist and the Southern Convention was pro-slavery. Northern Baptist churches would actually hold revival meetings for slaves in the South where they would preach about the evils of slavery (Methodists did this too). I'd also like to point out the irony of Southern Baptists originally being pro-slavery as the majority of black Baptist churches are Southern Baptist churches (those claiming the Baptist denomination name anyway). There's also the nice little irony that most of the racist ppl I've ever met have been Baptists that grew up in churches that were associated with one of the organizations that came out of the Northern Baptist Convention (that includes my mother's family). Mind, I grew up surrounded by Baptists, so that is fairly anecdotal. Someone who grew up surrounded by a different denomination could easily have a similar story. Basically, racism isn't just in the South - I've lived in the North all my life and I've met a hell of a lot of racist assholes.

Parallel universes do turn up occasionally in Doctor Who in the classic series. But since the Doc occasionally mentions having visited Biblical events creationists are probably more Whovian then Trekkie

Damn... I want that book, but it's a little pricey at the moment. It's on the list, next time I'm picking up books for myself rather than research.

I had to pick a value that would give me at least the hairsbreath hope of making a living from the royalties. I hope maybe eventually to do a proper published version with illustrations (which Christine Janis recommended the book needed, I heartily agree)

I absolutely understand the pricing, just a case of bad timing as I'd just spent a bunch on "research" books rather than enjoyment (I tackle pseudoscience, religion, & other crazies, so as much as I enjoy researching topics, I don't always consider reading those sorts of texts to be enjoyable). As I said above, it's on the list & will be bought.

There's lots of the older (but still valid" material freebie at www.tortucan.wordpress.com, including take down of some of the reptile-mammal transition case in 3 Macroevolutionary Episodes. You can see also how far I've moved ahead in 2016 compared to my research base of 2004

Dr. Georgia Purdom says we know how the world is going to end, god’s going to burn it up with fire and whilst saying this is giggling her head off. Yeeaah!! burn the bas*ards God and do it slowly so we can enjoy every excruciating second of it !! We love you God!!! Great video, great guest speaker and great point about bunny eyes.

The irony. The information for every topic on AIG comes from a popular science magazine.

@26:00 ish, Re: beauty and evolution... y'know I always kinda figured that beauty in humans would serve as a general indicator of physical health. Clear skin, bright eyes, luxurious hair, all indicate the absence of disease or defects. Likewise, we generally consider order and patterns more aesthetically pleasing than chaos and discord, so we prefer to keep our living spaces neat and tidy (Maybe even decorated with art). As a survival trait, this means we have a general preference to remain within settled areas rather than wandering off to parts unknown to die in a ditch. Order is like the human way of marking our territory, I guess. Similarly, we tend to consider specific varieties of nature aesthetically pleasing, typically associated with biomes/environments suitable for prosperous habitation. Don't mind me, just 2c from an artist who's tired of hearing that "art and beauty have no survival purpose." X3 PS: If there is scientifically backed support for the role of beauty in evolution, I'd love to hear about it some time.

Our brains are wired to prefer pattern and order via categorisation as a way to consolidate the massive amount of information we receive on a daily basis as well as a tendency to prefer what is familiar over what is foreign. Newborns have an instinctive preference for faces over any other pattern since this improves it chances of being cared for. Incidentally their limited focus is also optimal at a range it would be whilst being held/breastfed. As you stated a person’s health is often related to symmetry which is why those deemed beautiful are often found to have very symmetrical features.

There are two kinds of fish, carnivores and plant-eaters. If you feed in the wrong kind of food, it will die. So how the hell did carnivorous fish live on plants then suddenly flip diets?
