The Walt Disney World kennel was the setting for a musical number in the 1990 TV special "The Muppets at Walt Disney World," when Rowlf the piano-playing dog was taken there. (At least in-universe. The kennel interior was probably a set.)

I worked at Disneyland in the late 80's while I was in high school. I started in the parking lot and moved to the trains. But part of the training was to work the kennel. I worked it for 2 days. Loved the Parking Lot team and the Trains were a blast to work, but I really wanted to work the Haunted Mansion. Disney was the best and worst place I ever worked.

Especially since, even to this day, all pet food is lacking in magnesium, which is essential to process calcium--something that IS added to pet foods. This same catastrophic mineral imbalance is also in human food. For any creature that has bones, the less magnesium you consume, the more toxic calcium is. Our food fortification practices have destroyed countless lives. 75% of the healthcare industry's profits come from things that are literally just magnesium deficiency. With the pet food industry, though, it's most likely more about ignorance than outright corruption, unlike the human food industry. The FDA, food manufacturers, and the pharmaceutical industry are all conspiring to destroy every inch of our bodies to maximize healthcare profits (and make ordinary people easier for the ruling class to control--longterm calcium/magnesium imbalance slowly destroys your brain and is as harmful as, say, lead poisoning)

Love the pics of the Ken-L-Land Pet Motel at Disneyland. People like myself, that grew up in the 50s and 60s and had dogs as our companions take umbrage at you calling Ken-L-Ration an "obscure" pet food product. There were not a lot of options until the mid-60s. My Wire Hair Terrier ate Ken-L-Ration wet and dry and he lived almost 17 years. He actually survived three consecutive days' stay at the Pet Motel, but turned his back on us when we picked him up. He wanted to go to Disneyland and was pissed off.

My dad raised pugs back in the 60s, and my own dog was a dachshund/Basset Hound mix. We fed all of them Ken-L-Ration. Everyone who had dogs fed them that brand, or Friskies. There wasn't the plethora of pet foods back then that we have today. All of our dogs did fine, and we even had a couple of cats that ate the Ken-L-Ration food too. (Jan Griffiths).

I remember housing our dog there back in the early 70's when it was Kal-Kan's. It was still very visible from the parking lot and easy to get to. The weird thing about this video is the part about Sgt. Preston of the Yukon. This kennel is on Disney property and yet their celebrity sponsor wasn't a Disney one at all. Sgt. Preston had more to do with Jack Wrather, the owner of the Disneyland Hotel across the street. Wrather's wife was one of the stars of Lassie, Clayton "The Lone Ranger" Moore was on hand for the grand opening of the Disneyland Hotel in costume, and at one point the hotel had a dinner show/bar called Sgt. Preston's of the Yukon. I can't think of one place or time where any of Wrather's licensed properties was seen on Disneyland property, and yet there's Sgt. Preston promoting the Kennel. Why? Wrather didn't own Ken-L-Ration. I can't think of any way he was tied to it, and if he was you'd think he would have capitalized on Lassie not the guy riding the thing Ken-L-Ration is made out of.

Living in Los Alamitos when the park opened, we weren't so far away that our dog was alone longer than a normal work/school day. So I never paid that much attention to the kennel. Thanks for the info. However my Grandma managed a pet shop in Long Beach in '58 that sold frozen horsemeat. My Grandpa (step, thankfully) would occasionally nip some from the store when he made spaghetti. He could spend less time shopping and more time drinking.

The kennel never had attractions for the dogs. In the 1950's they should have showed the canine guests "dog of the future" videos, where they saw what future dogs eat. No more horsemeat. That, along with canine rides and activities. It's only fair. Their owners are having fun at Disneyland, with no Doggieland for them. The current kennel should feature "dog days of the past" films, learning how their ancestors dined on cheap horsemeat at the 25 cents per day kennel, as they're dining on the $20 per day gourmet stuff. Generation Z dogs just don't know how good they now have it.

At one time Bank Of America, whose presence on Main St. spans decades, used to reward employees of various branches for 'services above and beyond'. At a branch where I worked in the 1970s there was an employee who had discovered a major 'kiting crew' and had been thusly rewarded. She did not feel spending an hour each way on the Santa Ana Freeway (now I - 5) for 2 weeks was much of a reward. And she gained 3 pounds from the available food. Not a happy lady.
