It was neat to have a lagoon there, especially on hot summer days, to sit by and grab a bite to eat.... looking at the cooling waters flowing off Skull Rock. And the ship itself was "timeless". Sadly, "modern" Disney suits got in the mindset that everything was "expendable" and made no effort to work their revamping of Fantasyland around the lagoon. Instead, just bulldoze. Sadly it sums up much of Disney's corporate identity since at least the 1980s....

What even hurt more was the shot of the ship with a teenaged Bobby Driscoll, who was the voice for Peter Pan. Almost right after the opening of Disneyland. Walt Disney automatically cancelled Driscoll's contract because the poor guy suffered from bad acne. Driscoll was a child actor who was often lent out to other studios and he actually one a special Oscar for his efforts. Then there was the shot of Heather O'Roarke, the future child star of Poltergeist, speaking to that stuffed Mickey Mouse. O'Roarke tragically died at the young age of twelve due to cardiac arrest from septic shock. Driscoll, who was divorced and penniless in 1968 was attempting to make a career for himself but due to his heavy drug usage, that never happened. Bobby's dead body was found by two playing children in a vacant tentament building in Manhattan. The cause of death was hardening of the arteries due to heavy drug usage.

I love Disneyland, but I always feel really sad when I go and visit and see those spaces in Tomorrowland that are completely underutilized, especially knowing a lot of them had once been used for something. So much money and so many remodels, youd think they would manage to figure out something to make Tomorrowland feel as full as the rest of the park.

chuckcookus Of the attractions you've listed, only one's space is not currently being utilized and that's the People Mover. Everything else has either had part of their space taken over by a new attaction or has been completely replaced by something new.
@MKIVWWI6 жыл бұрын
Dansparce -- Sadly, without Walt's guiding influence, Disney lost any real vision of the "near future" (I'm talking 30 - 50 years, not Star Wars fantasy stuff), and let Tomorrowland slide. Good rides that were timeless gone -- the Skybuckets, the Peoplemover, the Astrojets... these should still be there. Zero reason to remove any of these three. Tomorrowland Terrace with the raising stage should still be there, as well. I think Tomorrowland's 1967 face-lift was the best incarnation ever, and the buildings still looks quite "futuristic" even today. Sorry, but 1870s Jules Verne might have been "futuristic" a century ago, but not now. It's simply NOT our 'tomorrow'. As for the attractions, sure some needed to be remade. Why not revamp Mission to Moon/Mars into something more current (NOT an "auditorium" experience anymore, which was passé) but a Omnimover type ride where you see the rings of Saturn, plumb the depths of the icy seas of Europa, zip over the hot Venusian landscape, travel on the edge of Mars' Valles Marineris, etc. Revamp the shrinking ride from atomic level into a "Fantastic Voyage" type where guests are "miniaturized" and go thru the human body, like the still classic and timeless 1966 movie? Disney has copped out with way too much Star Wars stuff (which is a movie franchise I don't happen to care for) -- and is NOT "tomorrowland" material (just cause it takes place in space), nor is it educational, which Walt strove for. Maybe some aspects of Star Wars will be "tomorrow" in a few thousand years, but that's NOT what Walt intended -- he wanted his Tomorrowland to be always evolving, and staying just a few decades "ahead of the curve". When I go back and look at 1967-era Tomorrowland, it's still classic, clean, and has great lines. Now, that Jules Verne piece of copper junk at the entrance, cheapy looking plastic signage, and a menagerie of different looks, like some "boulevard of the world"? Get rid of it all and go back to your 1967, including the Astrojets, Tomorrowland Terrace, Skybuckets, late 50s style Monorail cars, Peoplemover... and paint those danged subs back to Navy grey! Who needs to advertise for an old Beatles song?
@Riceball016 жыл бұрын
MKIVWWI Astrojets are still at Disneyland, they were just moved from on top of the People Mover loading platform to the front of Tomorrowland is all. Also, to the best of my knowledge (it's been a few years since I've last been to the Park) the Tomorrowland stage is stil around too and still comes up from underneath Tomorrowland. In regards to Skybuckets and Peoplemover, yeah, they should have kept both if only because they were relaxing rides that weren't too busy so were a good chance to get off of your feet for a while without having to wait a long time to do so. Sadly, at Disneyland at least, the PeopleMover can't be brought back due to the state of the ride track, although it is more feasible than the SKybuckets since their old path through the Matterhorn is now closed and they would have to completely reroute the ride.

Back then Knotts Berry Farm owned Calico Ghost Town where you could get soda cups with pure boysenberry juice (pure and real). I remember hot muggy afternoons with a Mint Julip drink overlooking the paddle wheel and pirate ships passing by, sugaring up before voyaging to Tom Sawyer's Island. Rug rat heaven in the 1950's!

Are people really mourning the loss of an average restaurant that replaced one of Disneyland's best attractions? You can still get some of the same food elsewhere in the park.
@PepperTreeVilla6 жыл бұрын
Mark, I still mourn the loss of the Welch’s Juice Bar in Fantasyland. There was nothing quite like an ice cold glass of Welch’s grape juice during a hot summer afternoon in Anaheim. However, Pizza Oom Mow Mow was an opening day restaurant that served pizza in the shape of surfboards. It was located to the left side of Burger Invasion. The old Burger Invasion location became Paradise Garden Grill and the pizza place is now called Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta. Great job on the video! I ALWAYS appreciate your diligent work.

You got a thumbs up JUST for having the Pirate Ship in the thumb! I remember that place - which closed when I was pretty young - and my (now dead) Dad LOVED that place!! Skull Rock, and the walkthrough... it was slightly OK to go to the hotel after that was removed, to the waterfalls and the Dancing Waters show (precursor teeny of Fantasmic), but Dad always reminisced about Skull Rock. I think he was a pirate (a nice one) in another life. ;) I miss Mission to Mars... it was neat. And Captain EO was WEIRD... but cool to my youngish eyes. I just lurv that orange and blue tile! May have had an influence on my favorite shade of orange: the darkest tiles pretty much are my favorite color. ErMerGersh!!! THAT SPECIAL! I HAVE SEEN THAT A THOUSAND TIMES! used to watch it at least a few times a year on Beta... I am so old... *hee* Mickey Mouse/Fantasyland Theater! They removed many parent's sanity place when they got rid of that... and a place to make sure young'uns didn't get overheated or too overwhelmed. They really do need to bring back resting places inside the park that aren't in a line. Thanks again for the Memory Lane trip.

Warlocke000 I like to imagine he recorded his lines for The Fox and the Hound while still wearing the Snake Plisskin costume

In late 1970's, I was little kid with My family went to there and I saw a Pirate Ship by Chicken of the Sea. I didn't go to Disneyland again till 1984, my brother and I went to there again and I walked around there. where was pirate ship? Oh it was gone and now was new Dumbo rides.

Someday could you do a whole video about Disneyland's old Fantasyland and its massive '80s overhaul?
@jamesrael95575 жыл бұрын
Wow, I don't think I would have even recognized first decade Disneyland. I grew up with it as a southern Californian in the 80's, and know it inside and out. But it sure looks different in the 50's and early 60's.

Another McDonald’s related thing about Disney is that in the dinosaur ride the pipes are coloured like condiments so white is mayo yellow is mustard and red is ketchup

Heh, my parents never stopped referring to it as the Egg House. Back when I was a little kid, we would go there as early as possible when we visited so we could have breakfast at the Egg House. I still remember the Mickey Mouse pancakes there, not quite what is known as that today...... Nostalgia.....

I see the Disney parks McDonald's glasses and I had to go to my cabinet to see the ones we have. My brothers use them as tumblers for sipping whiskey nowadays.

Theres a little ice parlor in Euro Disney who has those images of the centaurs from Fantasia. I think it looks pretty sililar to the one you shown.

I do appreciate the fact that the McD QPs & Dbl QPs R made fresh, & I'm pretty sure they upped the overall quality of all their food. & TBH, I don't even get fries normally, so I don't miss super sized options.

Just a small correction. When your talking about McDonald's in the parks you stated that it was first implemented in Dinoland in 1997 but Disney Animal Kingdom didn't open until 1998.

If anyone remembers a McDonald’s was at downtown Disney here in Orlando. Now this is before the conversation into Disney springs. I think the area became something else but I’m not sure exactly what because it was really close to what the employee parking is now.
