It's so interesting that Japanese has so many wide variety of cultures. These pop cultures also has its own subcultures evolves over decades. It is so interesting to see many lifestyle of people in modern days. Having a typical work personality on the week day. On the other hand, maintaining owns interesting hobbies that is so much different personality yet seems to fit in one person's life. I wonder back in days when we don't have internet this kind of pop culture wouldn't be so much globally widespread but back then the culture is already cultivate and the community is growing and evolving until nowadays. Such an interesting thoughts to have.

Such a nice video! I am a massive fan of Touken Ranbu, and enjoy other 2.5次元 shows, too. Most of the fans I know don't fit that stereotyped image of an otaku either. Also, living in a rural part of Japan means it's less apparent that I enjoy otaku interests and oshikatsu.

Mizuki is só pretty and by her appearence I wouldn't tell she's an otaku! When she recommended the Kimi ni Todoke manga and started looking through the BL ones it certainly brought back memories from when I was an otaku as well, I would consume all of this kinda stuff and even more daily! And by the end of the video I can tell that she found another addiction to her list, I used to dream about having lots of BJDs and dolfie dream dolls dressed as my fav characters as well 😂 I loved watching the weekend routine of an actual otaku in Japan, it made me relate to her hobbies a lot! A lot of people in the West (especially on websites like reddit) like to tell people that they are weird for watching anime and that people in Japan look down on anime otaku, which is just plain wrong. I spent a year in Japan and almost every single person watched SOME type of anime. Spy x Family and Kimetsu no Yaiba have really propelled anime into proper mainstream. Sure, not everyone is super into it like Mizuki is but anime watchers are far more accepted than angry internet people make it sound.

Absolutely this. Last time I was in Japan, I tried not to bring up anime or manga- until the locals asked if I like anime and were delighted to find out that I do 😂 it was so refreshing.

It's not watching anime itself that's distasteful to Japanese people, it's specific anime shows/genres and how some weebs or JP otaku talk or act about it that's the issue.
@VanillaCoke1956
@VanillaCoke1956 Жыл бұрын
@@MoreEvilThanYahweh ...yeah, so? You can make this case about literally any other hobby people have. If your argument is "The issue is this specific subset of people engaging in this hobby are bad", then it's not a good argument. "It's not watching football that's distasteful to people, it's specific fans who are hooligans that are the issue".
@MoreEvilThanYahweh
@MoreEvilThanYahweh Жыл бұрын
@@VanillaCoke1956 It's the difference between mentioning you enjoy Demon Slayer when prompted or gushing at length about Pretty Cure as a grown man while making poorly disguised attempts at hiding how attracted you are to them. It's not even like hooliganism or political extremism, you're not gonna be able to sell liking Pretty Cure or shows in that genre as an adult male to a normal Japanese person and not give off kimota vibes.

Something that viewers may want to keep in mind before going around Japan saying "I am an otaku": The word "otaku" is not positive at all. It implies an obsessive behavior that, more often than not, is linked to mental health issues. Also, "otaku" refers to the behavior pattern, not to the subject which the behavior focuses on. There are otakus of guns, otakus of cars, etc. The term by itself only indicates a compulsive, unhealthy obsession. By itself, it does not mean you like manga / anime. Therefore, if you say to someone in Japan that you are an otaku, they may reply: " an otaku of what?" So, think twice before saying "I'm an otaku" in situations like a first date or a job interview in Japan. It is unlikely to go well. Instead, you will be better off using expressions like "I am interested in / my hobby is", which will not carry a connotation about your state of mind.
