Looks like they are serving you with traditional delicacies e.g. kuih sepit, kuih cuan & kuih sarang semut often consumed during Gawai. Next time can come stay at longhouse for merrier Gawai atmosphere. You get to visit (ngabang) from room to room & also witness longhouse events organised at the common hall (ruai)

@@aishahembi4709, if you want to see traditional longhouses made from ironwood, Saribas has many but they don't participate in tourism. Masih ada sampai sekarang. Rumahpanjang asal nenek sebelah mak saya maintain bahagian common area and bilik but they modernised the dapur area mainly for safety and better sanitation. The longhouse is originally built using "pasak" and at some areas ada diikat menggunakan rotan. Kalau ada paku-paku tu semua... tu benda baru.

1:45 In the longhouse where I'm from, our chief is elected and then we inform the town council for them to register him in their record as our chief. A longhouse will only be recognised as one (current modern time - to make administration easier) if it has not less than 10 units. Longhouse chiefs get to meet at district level, attend council organised courses to help them managed their people, etc. and also given allocations for utilities, etc. 2:28 Cock fighting is a tradition of the Ibans. It is organised during pre-Gawai especially the grand and elaborate Gawai Antu and the Ibans are the only one allowed to organise it. Any longhouse that organises one must make arrangement with the town council and get a police permit. Gambling is "technically" not allowed. Traditionally roosters weren't/aren't made to fight to the death but any sign of cower would make the opponent the winner. For a number of longhouses, they simply organise a symbolic cockfighting during pre-Gawai only as a mark of our tradition and heritage. Not all longhouses would organise one. 8:45 That "Bekikis Bulu Betis" (shaving the hair off one's calves) is a popular song about a man who was very keen to make a lady his wife. 9:40 You're simply being invited to visit the next door neighbour. More drinking and eating lah. That's the norm when we receive guests. 😆 During Gawai too. Now imagine going from one unit to the next all the way to the end of the longhouse. 😄
@KenAbroad2 жыл бұрын
And then having tuak in every unit? 😳😄
@bungaialoevera2 жыл бұрын
During Gawai, @@KenAbroad... yes. 😁 But nowadays some units serve soft drinks too. You can ask for water too. Gawai is the only time we are allowed to waste... traditionally, wasting is considered a bad thing and taboo. To accommodate Muslims guests, we tend to serve packed drinks and served halal snacks we buy from halal shop or we ask Muslim friends to cater for us.

There's 2 school of thought regarding the Iban longhouse. There a modern one like this village had or those in the quintessential akin to the old ones where JetlagWarroir spend a night at. Most start transitioning to the more modern one - like the previous vids they starts excavate for new foundation, and those opt for old is quite rare these days they become tourist attraction. Glad you can experience on that. :)
@bungaialoevera2 жыл бұрын
Have a look at this longhouse. To me... this is the more impressive traditional longhouse. You can see the ruai - particularly - is mostly made from ironwood. And the common area always have the traditional three section consisting of the tempuan, ruai and pantar. This is the signature of the longhouses of the Saribas people. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXWvnquOYtKgm9U

This is a modern longhouse but they still maintain the traditional design. Exactly how we welcome guests..definitely serve drinks and snacks but not necessarily with tuak. Its more like an open house because we just celebrated Gawai @Harvest festival on 1st and 2nd June. Do you know that there is a primary school behind that longhouse? You need to walk approx 2km on a trail to reach that school. While the longhouse you visited is beautiful, luxurious and complete with basic amenities, the school is dilapidated and has no electricity. It relies on diesel powered generator for electricity.. the folks at that longhouse will talk proudly of their longhouse, their children are somebody, with good jobs... Bet they dont mention about the school at the back... If you still there, try take a walk to the school.. if you are lucky the track is dry and easy to walk on... If it rains, the track become muddy and during monsoon season the track will be flooded thus the school is unreachable...
