Sean’s poise was what really struck me. By far the biggest fight of his life, and yet he never sent for a takedown, never rushed in, never overextended, etc. He kept his mind on the mission from bell to bell, kept the fight in his range and simply walked Adesanya down using nothing but the basics. Incredible performance on so many levels.

idk why mma fighters don't throw straight punches much more often, its much harder to dodge it since you can combo it with a kick after and the small gloves makes it much harder to block it fully like in boxing

No analysis is complete without looking at defense. Strickland's was better than all Adesanya's other opponents. Same thing was true with Weidman. Silva used the same tricky strikes he did against Griffin, Belfort, Okami, etc but Weidman defended it all and that's why he got a KO/KD in both fights.

Sean did what we wanted everybody to do vs Adesanya. Nobody pressures him, everybody says they will but once they are in there, they get mystified by Adesanyas movement. Sean used his perfect defense to stand in front of Izzy and just hit him with basics when Izzy was using the flashy shit. He kept going back to the well with the head kick and those leaning hooks he throws but Sean saw it every time and was even countering. Sean Strickland beating Izzy, especially how he beat him, was such a huge payoff for me personally after getting so frustrated from years of seeing guys get frozen in front of Izzy.

W take. It was such a breath of fresh air watching someone not give in to dogmans tactics. His game plan has always been to run away for 15 or 25 minutes, induce a chase, land a couple counter strikes or lucky counter KO, and continue to run the rest of the fight hoping he wins on the scorecards. Sean is 100% the better fighter and even giving dogman an immediate rematch would have the same outcome. Sean is a better mixed martial artist then dogman is. Dogman should retire, he’s had a good run but he’s at the end of the road.

Another thing I wanted to add, speaking as a Boxer who primarily uses the Philly Shell and the Half Shell. Strickland has modified the Philly Shell in a unique way that works for MMA, standing more squared and less bladed like you would in Boxing but he still doesn’t roll well with lead hooks which is one of the big punches for defeating Philly Shell boxers. This is because of him being both squared and the smaller gloves used in MMA. In Boxing, the meta to beat the Philly Shell is to intentionally throw straight punches at the forearms (another forgotten fundamental aspect of Boxing that you don’t see done anymore), jab the shoulder, lead hook up top, overhand right (even if they roll with it, you will still catch them over the shoulder), and especially lead uppercuts to split the shell up the middle and then power uppercuts to put them on their ass. Izzy did none of this. Not to mention in the open stance, the Philly Shell is very weak against opposite stances fighters. Even Mayweather would abandon the Philly Shell against Southpaws and would instead use the High Guard. Go watch his fights with Zab Judah and Manny Pacquiao as good examples. Izzy could’ve made this more competitive if he, like you said, worked on evolving as a fighter. What I really liked about Sean’s performance was his consistent use of flicker jabs, you see it all the time in Boxing but almost never used in MMA. Izzy had no answer for Sean’s flicker jab. Another aspect of Sean’s game that nobody talks about is his use of the European Long Guard. Most Boxers use around 2 or 3 different guards for certain situations, and most Philly Shell boxers will either use a High Guard or a Half Shell as secondary guards. Sean doesn’t use High Guard/Half Shell but instead used the European Long Guard to catch/frame against all of the looping right hands and overhands that Izzy tried to throw over the top while rolling. That was actually very impressive and takes a lot of discipline and poise to master. Again, looking at Strickland’s fight with Pereira who is a lead hook specialist, it is a lot more difficult to roll with lead hooks in a squared, upright Philly Shell stance with 4 oz gloves in MMA especially when you have to take kicks into consideration. Sean has gotten cracked quite a few times with lead (left) hooks. Another thing I had forgot to mention earlier on in regards to beating Philly Shell boxers is constant forward pressure. Philly Shell requires a lot of disciplined footwork and distance management. Sean does better when he leads the dance but has struggled and even lost when he let his opponents lead the dance. Again, Izzy’s willingness to concede octagon control is what got him in trouble against guys who have very good boxing and forward pressure. If they do rematch, it would be interesting to see how they both readjust.
@MrDvfdsv
@MrDvfdsv Жыл бұрын
Nice take! I would add that staying more upright and arching the back in a Philly against hooks works well but that would open up takedowns a lot in mma.... Which Izzy is not known for though, so it would've been a shock to see him capitalize on that. And then as you said, the long guard is so good for him because it also makes deflecting kicks easier since he only used it when there was distance between them created by him backing down for a second. It must have been so frustrating for Izzy to have someone come at him not at full force but slow and steady which messes up his counterstriking and each time he wanted to throw something, may it be hooks or kicks, Sean already read that and stepped back switching to the long guard to immediately come back in pressuring and going back to a tight Philly that can't be capitalized on by a wrong parry off a feint. Truly brilliant.

Excellent analysis. Izzy is a great kickboxer and compared to the majority of MMA fighters he will out-strike and overwhelm them. But this is MMA. And sadly he hasn't evolved and improved his other skill-sets. And to be completely honest his striking has become predictable. Sean did an amazing job of neutralising Izzy with fundamentals. Checking kicks, using jabs and not allowing Izzy time to get comfortable by constantly walking him down. It was a real stellar performance and I can't see Izzy beating Sean in a rematch. He won't have enough time to make the necessary adjustments and his wrestling and jiu-jitsu are terrible. Sean wins again imo.

I don't know much about fighting, but wouldn't using knees and elbows help for longer fighters who are fighting shorter fighters who have the advantage on the inside as well? You're reducing the length of your strikes while also delivering a more concentrated blow than a traditional punch, which could compete with the shorter fighter who I would imagine naturally produces more power punching up with the use of his hips and legs than a tall fighter punching down primarily generating power from his torso in the inside. I see Jon Jones use elbows and knees a lot; also Muay Thai uses them a lot too along with a clench to set it up a lot the of time. A few elbows or a knee would discourage anyone from walking you down. That would seem like a simple solution for a long kickboxer who feels most comfortable striking.
@rithrean
@rithrean Жыл бұрын
@@joungyalen25 That depends on the fighter and how they stylistically match-up. Fighting in the THAI CLINCH usually works on fighters that are not strong fighting in the POCKET. They usually cease up under pressure when tangled up. In this case with IZZY he likes to utilize his SPACE for range and movement. Where as clinching with Strickland would probably be a bad idea because he likes to press forward and doesn't mind fighting in the pocket and exchange with you. Or as Strickland puts it "fighting in the PHONE BOOTH". Jone's is the same way but he does have great defense with his wrestling. But if you watch his fights carefully he doesn't like to be pressured and put against the cage were he is limited in SPACE to fight using his RANGE. That is why you will always see guys like him with that long range frame reset their position back to the center of the cage or circle their opponents to try and stay off the cage. Strickland did a great job in cutting off the cage and backing IZZY up so he couldn't go switch stance on him and fight off his back leg. Poatan did the same thing to IZZY. The thing is this fight game is all about timing and inches for anyone to get caught with an opening and that is where IZZY is good at with his counter striking. He's dangerous at any given moment if he SNIPERS you and lands with one shot. Kenanktv breaks down IZZY fighting habits pretty good.

He used to be a kickboxer nd he still is a kickboxer. He literally has nothing else to offer. Also if you think about it, there is not a single fighter that has elite wrestling background that he fought except Romero but unfortunately Romero decided to not fight at all. I genuinely believe khamzat would have submitted him the first round. Its sad that some people watch these sports but have absolutely no clue about anything nd how it works. One thing that always bothered me while watching Adesanya's striking, it's his layers of defense, relying only on leaning his head backwards and circling(which he does very well), however, I've alway thought that he was very beatable due to this and no fighters were able to expose him, except for Poatan (who has bad habits in his last fight with izzy - and payed for it) and Gastelum. Sean Strickland didn't fall for any of his feints, closed the distance in a sneaky way, and added George Foreman style of avoiding getting punched. Dude looked so good yesterday that I couldn't believe, that knockdown in the first round was amazing as well. Well deserved win for Sean, and one of Izzy's worst performance ever, probably, didn't show a lot of fight IQ, unable to readapt, looked one-dimensional and a little tired.

looking like no immediate rematch which is the right call. Considering how Sean dog walked him with a very disciplined and identifiable game plan, I’d like to see Izzy matched up with someone else to see if they can duplicate Sean’s success using Sean’s blueprint. Strickland really isn't a heavy hitter, though. He's good at boxing, but he's not known as a heavy hitter. I don't think he overpowered Adesanya. He fought a smarter fight, though. Usually when he puts a guy down to the canvas it is with timing. He has good timing.
@aquatazer

He’s definitely stronger than Izzy physically, but Strickland brought up his lack of power in the post-fight press conference. The difference is all in that timing and placement. He’s ridiculously good at timing his punches, it takes a lot to tag Izzy when he’s running the entire fight. I think Sean’s sacrificed brain cells for fight knowledge, because of his crazy amount of sparring he can see almost everything coming his way now. Especially after losing to and training with Pereira.

@@basedsigma5634 you have to either be trolling or not know anything about MMA. In either case, I’ll educate you. If you time a punch as someone’s walking into it, they will take much more damage. It’s just basic physics. If you run a car into a brick wall, the damage will be much more significant than someone merging into your lane and your cars colliding, or heck, even someone rear-ending you is going to have less force on you because your car will move forwards. Sean timed his punches as Izzy was throwing or against the fence so he didn’t have room to move his head back, thereby decreasing the force.

This fight says more about Izzy than Strickland. Pereira already displayed how to deal with someone like Strickland. You intercept him with power punches to the body. A pressure fighter can't pressure you if he's afraid of eating a bomb on his way in. This is why he was so scared to the point of reaching with his hands all the way down trying to parry his body jab fake. You can't just throw arm punches and then move backwards, else the pressure fighter will walk through your punch and simply keep pressuring you. Adesanya seemed to have learnt his lesson in the second Pereira fight when he decided to not back down and fight thw fire with fire. Looks like he's back with the cardio kickboxing style.

no your ring he did care he was careful walking in Never Over extending unless it's a counter shot most power shots came from easy put his hands up and blocked his face because sean saw everything coming never bit on 1 faint and didn't give Izzy a cop Out he checked more leg kicks tonight then his last 5 fights izzy couldn't deal whit a JAB,,12, OVER HAND , KICK & COUNTER LEFT HOOK # basic fundamentals

I said in various comments that sean beats adesanya by constant pressure which will not allow adesanya to get off. It will stifle adesanya because he wants to use his kicks, reach and quickness. By doing this adesanya cant get off kicks, punches etc. Strickland had him going back all night. I said it was possible because Strickland is very illusive. I did not expect him to be that defensively great. Dude fought up close to adesanya all night and barely got touched its insane. Izzy only landed 14% of head punches that he threw. Thats crazy!!!

What was clear was how close sean got to izzy before throwing. And izzy allowed it.
